In 1942, Allied intelligence agencies (British SOE and American OSS) trained Czech paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi official overseeing the Final Solution from Prague. After successfully killing Heydrich on May 27, 1942, the Nazis responded by completely destroying the village of Lidice, executing 173 men and boys, sending women to Ravensbrück concentration camp, and transferring 88 children to Chełmno extermination camp. Allied planners were aware that such a reprisal was likely before launching the mission, yet the decision was made anyway, with classified SOE files debating this ethical calculus remaining sealed for decades.

1942, America helped plan a mission that wiped out an entire village.
Reinhard Heydrich ran the final solution from a desk in Prague. The British Special Operations Executive, working alongside the Office of Strategic Services, trained two Czech paratroopers, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, and dropped them into occupied Czechoslovakia with one order, remove Heydrich.
On May 27th, their ambush worked. A grenade fragmented beneath his open car.
Heydrich passed 9 days later from his wounds. Then the Reich responded.
Heinrich Himmler personally ordered the village of Lidice erased, not damaged, erased. On June 10th, SS units rounded up every man and boy over 15, 173 people, and silenced them against a barn wall. The women went to Ravensbrück. 88 children were transferred to a facility in Chełmno. Almost none of them came back.
The village was leveled and the name was struck from German maps.
Here is what the textbooks leave out.
Allied planners knew a reprisal on this scale was likely before the mission launched. The decision was made anyway.
The classified SOE files debating that calculus stayed sealed for decades. The part nobody talks about, those files still aren't fully public.
Follow for the World War II they don't teach you.
