[00:00:32]>> Right. Although it's kind of confusing because two of them were presidents twice non-consecutively, so they count as two different presidents, >> right?

[00:00:46]>> Yeah.

[00:00:47]>> Gosh, this is so sad how little I know about US history. But yeah, so we're we're getting up there. We're getting presidential level right now. All right, we have a big show for this week and uh very excited about the coming weeks because we're going to have our big live program that's going to be filmed live.

So depending on whether you listen to this podcast before or after that may be of interest to you. But we are going to start off with a little bit of fun information. I always like to do things that edify our brains. You know, it's important to exercise your brain. And I'll give you some knowledge. I'm going to drop a knowledge bomb on you.

[00:01:38]>> To give you a sense of scale, the difference between a million and a billion. Have I told y'all that before?

[00:01:49]>> I'm starting to have deja vu all the time now. as if I've lived this life before.

[00:01:55]>> I don't Maybe you did this on the radio show. I don't remember.

[00:01:59]>> Forget a lot of stuff.

[00:02:01]>> A million seconds ago is 11.5 days ago.

[00:02:07]A billion seconds ago, 31.7 years ago.

[00:02:13]>> Wow.

[00:02:13]>> Wow, man.

[00:02:15]>> So, like a long time ago. So when you think of a millionaire and a billionaire, how much more is a billion?

[00:02:24]>> Everybody could spend a million dollars pretty easily.

[00:02:29]>> Yeah.

[00:02:29]>> I think it would be hard to spend a billion.

[00:02:32]>> I think most people think, man, if I had $2 million, I'd be set for life. And I think that people underestimate their uh spending habits.

[00:02:42]>> Yeah. and how that would ramp up and you'd think, well, I have unlimited money, so now I can start spending and you realize that your unlimited money runs out in two years. Yes. Because you were buying all kinds of crazy stuff because why not? You have unlimited money.

[00:02:57]>> If you have $2 million, you probably could be set for life if you lived a very Spartan lifestyle, >> right? Which is counterintuitive. You'd think you're a multi-millionaire, >> right?

[00:03:08]Therefore, you would always have money.

[00:03:11]But no, I think I think we Americans in particular, we love to spend. That's what keeps the economy going. It's patriotic for you to run out of that $2 million.

[00:03:21]>> Is that what makes that uh retirement thing so complicated? Because how many years are you talking about?

[00:03:27]>> You never know. You might be retired.

[00:03:29]>> Three years. 2 million be pretty good.

[00:03:31]>> You might kick the bucket after three years, but you might live 40 years.

[00:03:35]>> Yeah. Going to get back to work. And if you had a billion, >> good luck getting back in the workforce at a 100.

[00:03:41]>> How old are you? 98.

[00:03:44]>> Do you really think that you can lift these pallets of mulch and move them to the other side of the store?

[00:03:49]>> Uh, yeah, I think so. You give me a >> I don't think, sir. No, there's no for >> I can operate a forklift.

[00:03:55]>> No, this is manual labor, sir.

[00:03:57]>> And if you had a billion, you could run through it pretty quickly if you bought a pro sports franchise or something, you know, that cost a billion, >> right? You could blow it all there, but >> I think they finalize those.

[00:04:09]>> Yeah, >> I think they get a 30-year fixed on those sports franchises.

[00:04:13]>> Maybe >> something like that. All right. And I think that I teased this before in a previous episode of Gordo's Corner, and that is the crazy odds of when you shuffle a deck of cards. Like this always tickles my mind to see the odds and hear the stats around about how many different permutations there are of a deck of cards in the order that they can be in. The odds of you ever shuffling a deck into the exact same order twice are zero. Essentially zero.

[00:04:45]>> Wow. Whoa. And just after seven shuffles, you've likely created a card order that has never ever existed before in the history of anyone playing cards >> and just 52 cards.

[00:04:57]>> Yeah. The deck has never been in that order before.

[00:05:00]>> Wow.

[00:05:01]>> If you pharaoh shuffle seven times.

[00:05:03]>> That's why I know there's tricks and ways to market, but that's why card tricks always blow me away >> because of the difference.

[00:05:09]>> Just because I know the odds of, you know, how they're stacked and >> Well, because they're doing tricks. No, there's easy ways to do it, but it's still >> like the guy all of a sudden the the the card will fall out of the ceiling or just pick a random card and throw it up in the ceiling. That's your card.

[00:05:27]>> Yeah, I do love magic. I love going to a magic show.

[00:05:31]>> Let's have one.

[00:05:33]>> A muser's magic show.

[00:05:35]>> I have a quarter trick. Yeah, you can do some you have a trick and I can do a few different tricks that always amaze people, but they all work on the same types of principles. It's the forcing of a card. You know, the usually the the trick is always done at a time where you're not expecting the trick is done, >> right?

[00:05:54]>> You know, it's right up front when they know which card you have and then there's five pieces of theater that they have to go through before they reveal it. Mhm.

[00:06:02]>> But they could have told you right as soon as you picked the card out of the deck which one it was.

[00:06:06]>> You know, it's all those learning the tricks of magic defeats the magic itself. It's like it it's so deflating to learn. Oh, that's how that worked.

[00:06:16]And there's two types of people in the world. There's the people who want to know how it works, and there's the people as No, I enjoy the wonder.

[00:06:23]>> I want to know.

[00:06:24]>> And I hate that.

[00:06:26]>> I enjoy the wonder.

[00:06:27]>> I'm a want to know guy, and I hate that about myself. I want to know so that I can do the trick and amaze people.

[00:06:34]>> Yeah. Like reading people's minds. I love mentalism and all those tricks that appear to be reading your mind >> and then when >> that's freaky when they do that. The NFL teams >> Yeah. NFLers don't handle it very well.

[00:06:47]They have to run around. They have to leave the room the room and [laughter] >> the devil.

[00:06:53]>> People People get very demonstrative when Satan shows up with a mentalism trick.

[00:06:57]Can't believe there are that many different combinations in a card deck.

[00:07:01]>> There are more possible arrangements in shuffling uh in the shuffling of a deck of cards than there are stars in the sky.

[00:07:09]>> That's ridiculous.

[00:07:10]>> I know. It's mindboggling.

[00:07:14]>> So, you know, I've been playing chess a lot lately and I looked this up.

[00:07:17]>> Playing with your chest?

[00:07:19]>> Playing the game of chess.

[00:07:20]>> Oh, I thought No, >> cuz I've been doing the ice cubes on my nipples thing. There [laughter] there is basically >> an infinite amount of >> possible chess games.

[00:07:31]>> Yes, that's another one. Yes. It's like no chess game well after a certain number of moves, >> right?

[00:07:38]>> It's like uh have ever been played like if you play past and I forget how many moves it is past 20 moves or something like that. I I can't remember the number but yeah that you are playing a game that has never been played before.

[00:07:52]>> Isn't that amazing?

[00:07:53]>> Yes.

[00:07:53]>> Wow. Now, that makes more sense to me though than the deck of cards. Although got 52, but when you combine how many chess pieces there are by the number of squares there are on the board, >> right?

[00:08:05]>> That makes more sense to me than the deck of cards.

[00:08:08]>> Yeah. But you think of the the deck is not just the I guess it would be 10 numbers if you count ace as a one, right?

[00:08:19]>> 12 because 12 or 13 because you have the royal.

[00:08:21]>> Well, that's what I'm saying. You add those royals in there and then it >> they say there are about 10 to the 120th power possible chess games.

[00:08:31]>> Oh my gosh.

[00:08:32]>> A number that no human or they say in here even computer, although that'll probably change could ever play in a lifetime. [snorts] >> I don't know. It's It's weird, man.

[00:09:27]>> This comes to us from P1 Jared. Jared says, "Dearest musers, my family and I sometimes give each other hypotheticals, usually kid-friendly and light-hearted."

[00:09:38]Well, yesterday I was driving my 13-year-old daughter to school listening to you guys when she said, "Oh, Dad, I have a hypothetical.

[00:09:47]Would you die once a year knowing you'd come back to life the next day for a million dollars a year?" Now, here are the qualifications in this qualifiers.

[00:10:00]The catch is you can't die the same way twice and you can choose when you want to stop doing it. So that's an upside, right?

[00:10:10]You may do it after >> after two years you can say that's it.

[00:10:12]>> Yeah. I I think that this has to be after you have to make an initial fiveyear commitment. Then after five years you can opt out.

[00:10:20]>> Um but you can't die the same two ways twice.

[00:10:24]>> And you it doesn't mean that you will live for forever and get a million dollars a year for forever. You will, let's say, you died at whatever the a death is, 78 or >> but you're going to feel the pain of each death. If that's my first experience, yes, you experience each death. No way.

[00:10:40]>> You know what that reminds me of? The movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray.

[00:10:43]Remember he'd just walk out in front of a bus >> just to get the day over with as soon as possible >> and then wake up the next day.

[00:10:49]>> Yeah. [laughter] >> Great movie. I laughed so hard when I saw that for the first time. His reaction [clears throat] every morning waking [laughter] up.

[00:10:58]>> Yes. So Jared says, "Needless to say, I'm investigating therapy options for my daughter."

[00:11:03]>> Yeah. Really?

[00:11:03]>> And the idea of death by shark still haunts me. Because that's the thing.

[00:11:08]What if you've gone 40, 50 years of this, you've got $50 million, >> but you take that beach, >> you realize that all of the standard ways of death have kind of been exhausted. So now you're really paranoid >> and you think it when you go to the beach, I'm not going to get in the water. So you get on a boat, but then that boat sinks and that's your shark minute.

[00:11:30]>> But you can you can choose the way each >> Oh, it's a surprise. And you don't know you don't know when it happens during the year.

[00:11:39]>> Way would I do that?

[00:11:41]>> No.

[00:11:42]>> I thought it was you could choose. And then I'm thinking, well, maybe I could do that. Find the most painless ways.

[00:11:48]But it's going to be a once a year surprise. You get your head cut off.

[00:11:52]>> Terrible pain. No way. could be burned.

[00:11:56]>> No way.

[00:11:57]>> When you when you uh get some tree work done and that guy starts walking up your sidewalk with a chainsaw, you're [laughter] not exactly sure.

[00:12:04]>> Yeah. You're you're paranoid of everything.

[00:12:06]>> Is this the legit guy?

[00:12:07]>> No, there's not a price for that hypothetical.

[00:12:10]>> But if you just do it for five years, you have $5 million. And 5 million, you can live for the rest of your life on 5 million. If you invest it well, >> you'll be scarred. Miserable. Yes.

[00:12:21]>> Scarred forever mentally. $5 million. I don't care. You come back to life the next day.

[00:12:26]>> I don't care.

[00:12:27]>> Give me $1 billion dollar and the answer is still no.

[00:12:30]>> Wow.

[00:12:31]>> I'm with you. I'm with you on that. What about you?

[00:12:33]>> Uh >> never answers hypothetic.

[00:12:35]>> I think I would do it for for a million dollars a year. I would do it for the minimum the minimum of five years.

[00:12:42]>> You would take up smoking again. You would take up drinking again. You'd be a nervous wreck. Big mess.

[00:12:48]>> Absolutely. But I would be a >> bigger mess.

[00:12:50]>> Five millionaire. What do you call that?

[00:12:52]a quintillionaire. Quintillionaire.

[00:12:54]>> Multi-millionaire, I think is the term.

[00:12:57][laughter] >> Yeah, I guess I could have gone with that.

[00:12:59]>> Sure.

[00:12:59]>> Seeing as how it's a word I've already said once in this podcast. [laughter] >> Yeah, I think I would do it.

[00:13:05]>> Okay, >> definitely. Uh, and that was our P1 letter of the week. But I do have an additional one here. Jeff had an interesting question. And he said, "You're allowed to take one modern handheld weapon, so a pistol or a rifle or a machine gun to the past and participate in a historic battle. Now, you do risk the likelihood that you could be killed, but what do you take and what battle do you choose?" And you can have unlimited ammunition, but you still have to reload and all that. And you have the risk of death in that fight.

[00:13:38]>> So, it's weird because I've thought about that before.

[00:13:41]>> Have you?

[00:13:41]>> Yeah. Just like, you know, tough battles.

[00:13:43]>> How many women have thought about this?

[00:13:45]You know, really?

[00:13:46]>> Yeah.

[00:13:46]>> They didn't feel like this was a a possibility they had to prepare for mentally in case it came up.

[00:13:54]>> I think I know.

[00:13:55]>> I would go back to the Revolutionary War. Okay.

[00:13:58]>> And I would take a sword.

[00:14:00]>> You're an idiot. [laughter] >> You'd last five seconds.

[00:14:04]>> You are an idiot.

[00:14:06]I would go if you went back to the Revolutionary War, wouldn't you take a machine gun, >> just mow everybody down?

[00:14:13]>> Just absolutely.

[00:14:14]>> And then a cannon a quarter mile an hour, quarter mile an hour, quarter of a mile away figures out where you are.

[00:14:21]>> There's no way they could they could blast me. No way.

[00:14:25]>> Cannons could fire at least that far back.

[00:14:27]>> They can, but I just don't think I could run faster than they could figure it out. It does seem like canon is too primitive of technology where you could evade it, >> right? But the bad news is is I'm running away from the cannon, laughing at them as they've missed me every time because every time they fire the cannon, I watch it sail until it gets to the top of its arc before I even start running because it's so slow. And I'll run into the woods and of course I'll scratch myself on a branch and then no penicellin. So I just get infected and die, >> right? That's the that's the only problem with the revolutionary war. So, you gota there's some special area, some balance of you don't want to go back too far that you have horrible medicine, but you don't want to you need to go back far enough to where your weapon is going to be so outsized to what they have against you, >> right?

[00:15:21]Even u even if you had the machine gun and you're going back to the Revolutionary War to try to end it sooner >> and you accidentally strafe George Washington, [laughter] >> you're waiting gets away from you.

[00:15:36]>> Something's going to go haywire.

[00:15:37]>> Take out half the founding fathers.

[00:15:38][laughter] >> So George, you said you've thought about this a lot. So what did you ever come up with? Well, as a kid, I used to think about because the Alamo was like the saddest story, you know, you ever read about as a kid. It's like, oh my gosh, they were all killed. And so I I used to think about going back and helping Davy Crockett out with an Uzi of some sort.

[00:15:59]>> So you would take a machine gun.

[00:16:02]>> That was like eight-year-old me. That was like 8-year-old >> because you want to shoot down a thousand Mexicans.

[00:16:07]>> Well, see, that's the bottom line is no, war is terrible. It's not some video game. It's awful. No, I couldn't do that.

[00:16:14]>> But you would save all those men's lives.

[00:16:16]>> Yeah, but I couldn't do it.

[00:16:18]>> Why not?

[00:16:18]>> I I felt like a failure because I didn't serve in the military and a lot of my family did, but no, I I don't think >> I've always thought less of you because of that.

[00:16:26]>> Well, there's a lot of reasons to feel that way about me.

[00:16:28]>> The only opportunity I've had to tell you because it came up naturally.

[00:16:31]>> There's still time you could enlist.

[00:16:33]Bottom line is you don't want to shoot somebody. You don't want to kill somebody.

[00:16:37]>> Is that your PSA for the day?

[00:16:38]>> That's kids. Okay. If it was you learned one thing today.

[00:16:43]>> No, cuz even that uh that that would go wrong.

[00:16:46]>> George said he wanted to kill a thousand Mexicans and save Hitler's life. Okay, [laughter] this is the most controversial episode ever.

[00:16:53]>> Changed that was 8-year-old me. They just didn't want all those >> cool dudes in the Alamo to get killed.

[00:16:59]>> Cool dude. [laughter] >> Hey, it's John Wayne. I didn't want him to, you know, >> John Wayne wasn't in the Alamo. Well, when you're eight, you think that someone like him was Davy Crockett probably was a lot like John Wayne.

[00:17:12]>> Well, I think in the hypothetical that Jeff presented to us though, you have to choose a battle.

[00:17:17]>> You have to.

[00:17:18]>> You can't opt out and just say, "No, I've got a kickass life here. I choose not to serve." You can't do that.

[00:17:27]>> I'd go help him out at Pearl Harbor. How about that? So, that wasn't such a one-sided take today's anti-aircraft.

[00:17:34]Uh, >> is that handheld though? [laughter] >> It's got to be something. That's right.

[00:17:38]It's got to be handheld.

[00:17:39]>> It would be RPG. I guess >> I don't think I could help him much there.

[00:17:42]>> Biggest you could get there.

[00:17:43]>> How about I'm sounding the alarm 2 hours before? Hey, it's this is going to be bad.

[00:17:47]>> And everyone you you would be locked in a loony bin before >> No, even turn on that radar thing. Look, >> so your weapon is your hand to sound the alarm. That's what you're taking back.

[00:17:59]>> This is the all of this thought that he's given [laughter] this.

[00:18:04]You said that you've thought about this a lot.

[00:18:05]>> You changed the rules. I'm not 8 years old anymore. [laughter] >> You know, mine always related to Star Trek. I always dreamed of taking a phaser, some some sci-fi weapon back in time and then just dazzling everybody.

[00:18:21]>> Yeah, but that's not invented yet.

[00:18:24]>> I know that but that was when I used to think of this kind of a hypothetical as a kid. I would always want to take modern.

[00:18:30]>> But yes, you do have that opportunity to those people back then. You basically will be carrying a phaser. They were not going to see anything like this weapon that you have.

[00:18:40]>> And so you could do it. I think it I think the Revolutionary War is not a bad one.

[00:18:44]>> Okay, I'll take the Revolutionary War and I'll take a taser. [laughter] >> I'll have to walk up to each British soldier and tase them.

[00:18:52]>> No, that's not going to work. [laughter] You think there's any way that that taser's getting through all the clothing, those stupid costumes that they wore to fight in?

[00:19:01]>> Why did they all dress up in costumes?

[00:19:04]>> That's a good question. Back then, you had to know what team you're on.

[00:19:07]>> They had the most uncomfortable looking combat outfits.

[00:19:11]>> Yes. They're all dressed up like fancy lads.

[00:19:14]>> They weren't They weren't practical.

[00:19:16]They were all wearing wigs.

[00:19:17]>> Yeah. [laughter] A soldier shouldn't have to powder his wig. those stupid tri-c cornered hats.

[00:19:23]>> I don't think they worried about that battle.

[00:19:26]>> All right, let's do some news. You ready?

[00:19:28]>> Okay.

[00:19:29]>> All right. Here we go. We got a news intro.

[00:19:32]>> No. Please God.

[00:19:35]>> It's time for what are people or should people be talking about with a look at the news with your permanent [screaming] king.

[00:19:49]>> All right. Yes indeed. Thank you, announcer man. We start off with something that happened in Dallas and Fort Worth.

[00:19:59]There was a passenger at Love Field, which is a airport that's kind of in the heart of Dallas, and he was getting on a flight to Las Vegas, Southwest Airlines, but he wasn't going alone. He bought two tickets.

[00:20:16]You want to guess who his travel mate was? An animal?

[00:20:21]>> No.

[00:20:23]>> Himself?

[00:20:24]>> What?

[00:20:25]>> He needed two seats.

[00:20:27]>> Big guy.

[00:20:28]>> No, wasn't a big guy. Didn't need two seats.

[00:20:31]>> Human being >> close. It was a human like robot. It was a humanoid robot that was walking around talking to other passengers.

[00:20:43]>> What a >> that he gets on the plane with. And this company that did it, it's the robot studio. And the humanoid robot's name is Stewie, which is a funny name for a humanoid robot. Stewie had his own plane ticket. And the company made sure they did their due diligence and made sure that his battery was within the FAA's compliance.

[00:21:07]>> Wow.

[00:21:07]>> And uh so that Stewie could fly. So Stewie gets on this plane. Can you imagine how freaky that is? Watching a humanoid robot walking down the aisle, struggling with its carry-on to get it up in the baggage compartment, >> cursing, >> saying, "Oh, excuse me. I'm sorry. Can I get by here? I'm I'm window. I'm window.

[00:21:28]I need to get through here." Gosh.

[00:21:29]>> Doing all that, getting on the plane, and Stewie the robot flew on the plane.

[00:21:35]But Southwest was not happy about it.

[00:21:37]>> Yeah, they've got enough problems. We're trying to get humans to locations, not these, not these spare robots who have no function whatsoever. Why are you saying it so they go, "Oh, wow. It's a robot. He gets to fly with us." And he's whipping everyone's ass, asking questions.

[00:21:53]>> Very friendly. People enjoyed seeing the robot.

[00:21:56]>> People want to get on a plane. They want to take their flight. They don't want to talk to another human, let alone let alone a stupid robot.

[00:22:02]>> I bet he was more well behaved than a lot of people on planes these days.

[00:22:05]>> Yes, I bet he was, too. And I bet you that I would be interested in flying with a humanoid robot. I think that would be interesting. Now, I'm not saying like half of the flight being humanoid robot. That's not going to get tiresome.

[00:22:18]But I I think for, you know, a few times it seems kind of cool if a robot came and sat next to you.

[00:22:24]>> What's the purpose though?

[00:22:26]>> They were just doing it. Hey, let's see what happens.

[00:22:28]>> We don't have time for, hey, see what happens on planes right now. They were they were trying to obviously I think that the company was you know stunting and bringing awareness to robots >> right so someone would talk about it on a podcast awareness >> but I think that uh that if you do have an expensive humanoid robot let's say that is your I don't know companion in life and is the robot of your household that helps the kids with their homework and all that kind of stuff and you needed to fly it somewhere you may not be comfortable putting it in the cargo hold >> can I make >> so you may buy a ticket for your Stewie Can I make a prediction?

[00:23:02]>> Yeah.

[00:23:03]>> 10 years from now, 15 years from now, you'll see this a lot. People will be getting on planes. They'll be going to hotels, right?

[00:23:10]>> With their family robot that is basically their nanny. Yes.

[00:23:13]>> Or their butler or whatever.

[00:23:15]>> Yeah.

[00:23:15]>> You're going to see it a lot.

[00:23:17]>> That's what I'm saying, George.

[00:23:18]>> Okay. Well, until we get there, then >> the thing that Craig said, we don't need stunts on airplanes right now. We got enough problems.

[00:23:26]>> Well, okay. This one was kind of a stunt, but I just laid out a scenario in which it could be a real practical matter as well. If it's the the family robot, >> family robot. Okay, that's fine if we get there someday, but we're not there.

[00:23:38]>> Emotional support robot. Okay, >> I can see that happening.

[00:23:42]>> All those people need to get over themselves if they have a pet or a robot fly stepping into the future quite as well as you.

[00:23:50]>> Probably not.

[00:23:51]>> Yeah. this. So, this happened in Southwest comes out and says, "Look, we're updating our policy and this is what they issued. Southwest Airlines does not allow humanlike or animallike robots to be transported in the cabin or as checked baggage regardless of size or purpose." Good.

[00:24:10]>> And then they go on to define a human-like robot. And they also say they closed the loophole for animallike robots like those >> That's good.

[00:24:17]>> Creepy war dogs.

[00:24:19]>> They don't have time for that right now.

Uh there was one other news item dealing with a plane that I took notice of and this was a viral video that went around and we've all been on planes before and you've seen the air conditioning system where it is blowing out, you know, kind of mist or fog, the vapor that happens when the humidity is the right kind of conditions mixed with the air conditioner and it looks like it's vapor coming out of there. And usually it's just kind of interesting looking, you know, it kind of looks cool and Halloweeny. But there was a recent episode where the fog was coming out so thick and the viral video when you see it, it basically looks like everyone on the plane is being gassed by terrorists.

[00:25:31]>> Wow.

[00:25:31]>> And so some people were freaking out over it. The steis is getting on the loudspeaker saying, you know, this is just normal. It's just the air conditioning. Don't worry about it. Just stay calm. just think happy thoughts and no one get up and no one challenge us and everything will go just fine.

[00:25:47][laughter] >> And uh it was basically a non-event, but it was very creepy looking to see that.

[00:25:53]Um, and then at the conclusion of this news story, it mentioned another thing that happened recently on a plane that went viral, and that was a conflict between two passengers where the middle passenger kept reaching up every once in a while and turning off the vent for the window aisle passenger because the middle guy was cold.

[00:26:14]>> It's not his vent.

[00:26:16]>> Not his vent. And they start getting into it over this. And the middle guy even had smartass comments like, "I, hey, I paid for a ticket to fly. I didn't pay for experiencing your communal air conditioning and all this."

[00:26:31]He was just a total jerk.

[00:26:32]>> Wow.

[00:26:33]>> Total jerk.

[00:26:34]>> But it leads us into plane etiquette talk because the middle passenger does have some rights that other passengers don't.

[00:26:43]>> The right to armrest.

[00:26:45]>> Both of them.

[00:26:46]>> It's in the Bill of Rights. Y >> in the first 10 U bills of rights.

[00:26:52][laughter] >> This would be the first 10 amendments are the Bill of Rights. But yeah, that the middle guy gets the armrest within reason.

[00:27:02]>> Yeah, I think you share the armrest. You try to. It's not very big.

[00:27:09]>> The window passenger has the benefit of the window and one armrest all to themselves. The aisle has the aisle, easy access, and an armrest all to themselves.

[00:27:20]>> The middle man or woman gets the short straw. Therefore, they should get both armrests.

[00:27:26]>> Right. That's the rule of thumb.

[00:27:28]>> Yeah.

Now, I have had it happen before where I'm not the window guy and the window guy is asleep and has the window shade up >> and you reach over >> and I have reached over before. I've also done the thing of awakened the person and asked them, "Hey, since we're all sleeping, >> do you mind if you put the window shade down?"

[00:28:20]>> That's dicey. I don't know if you want to step into those waters. Why? I can't believe that you would on a plane give a guy a reach around.

[00:28:29]>> No. No. I reach over said >> reach over.

[00:28:34]>> You know what? I think asking politely is that's fine. But I think doing it on your own while he's asleep. That's a little sneaky. But I I felt the reason I did it on my own was the second time because the first time I woke the guy up and I felt bad about waking the guy up to do something that I could do myself.

[00:28:55]>> So, does the window guy have full control over the shade?

[00:28:59]>> 100%.

[00:29:00]>> Yeah. 100 some guy leaning over him.

[00:29:03]>> I think he has 99% control because if he's asleep and we're all trying to sleep, there's no reason to have that shade open. Maybe he sleeps better in bright light.

[00:29:15]>> Or if he >> That would be That would be me if I was a guy sleeping with the window shade up and somebody asked me to put it down.

[00:29:20]I'd say I I prefer to sleep in bright light. So >> if he [clears throat] wakes up, he wants to see what he wants to see and he doesn't want to feel closed in with the shade down. So it's his call.

[00:29:30]>> All right. What about this? And I've told you guys this story before. What about if you're flying and it's really hot outside and as you're landing the flight attendant says, "As we land, please close your window shades to keep the plane as cool as possible."

[00:29:44]>> So, everybody on the plane does it and it wasn't a quite a full flight. In fact, the guy up from us had his own row to himself and he did not lower his window shade.

[00:29:57]>> Did you give him a reach around? And >> so, I didn't reach over him. I walked, you know, over to where the window was and shut it because he wasn't polite enough to do it for the flight attendant.

[00:30:09]>> Now, he was not sitting by the window.

[00:30:11]He was sitting on the aisle >> to an empty row.

[00:30:14]>> To an empty row, >> but the window shade was open.

[00:30:16]>> So, as we're landing, then he leans over and puts it back up.

[00:30:21]>> And that's when I said, "Oh, I forgot this is your plane. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I forgot we were flying on your Aine. I Why? Why not? I'm >> so sorry.

[00:30:32]>> Try kindness one more time before you escalate.

[00:30:36]>> Because he was a total jackass. He was dropping fbombs the whole trip and just, you know, oh yeah, he was >> he was he was there for all amusement.

[00:30:46]>> Cool guy complainer that was always an announcement that was made. He always had a comment about everything that was said and >> like that's going to work.

[00:30:53]>> Oh, >> now there he was clearly in the wrong because at that point attendant or pilot, they overrule all passengers.

[00:31:00]Yeah, that's right. So, I was just helping him out. I said, "Hey, I was trying to help you out cuz I guess you weren't able to shut it. I want it open."

[00:31:07]>> Oh, yeah. That's right. It's your plane.

[00:31:09]I forgot.

[00:31:09]>> That's what No, that's when you just say, "Hey, the flight attendants told us to put them down."

[00:31:14]>> Yeah, I did say that first.

[00:31:15]>> They're the ones who put them down.

[00:31:17]>> Yeah, they have authority over all of us. Oh, God. Now you're getting my blood pressure [laughter] up and I'm not even confronting this guy.

[00:31:23]>> But you know what? I think now I would not I would just let him lift it up and I wouldn't confront because man plane incident >> no because you just don't want it. You don't want the the trouble and I can't believe the amount of incidents we have on planes and it starts with something like that.

I've had this this is one that I have happen every flight I take now and that is the person who just doesn't get that when they turn up the volume on their iPad loud enough for them to hear it >> that there are other sentient beings that are somewhat around their location >> like they can't quite can't quite understand that other people have the gift of hearing >> that's amazing >> every flight I've been on lately specifically will announce do not listen to anything on your personal device without wearing your own headphones.

[00:32:17]>> They don't even allow that.

[00:32:18]>> And I see people just completely disregard that.

[00:32:23]>> They they I actually saw someone u ask someone who had a kid that was listening full volume full volume cartoon that this kid was watching. And it was like a really frantic antic cartoon, right? All sorts of sound effects.

[00:32:40]>> All sound effects. BACK. [screaming] >> And and they they said to the uh to the parent, "Hey, that's pretty loud. You know, we we're got people trying to rest around here and that's very loud. Uh can you do you have headphones that they could wear or something?" And the parent did the Yeah, [snorts] she doesn't like wearing headphones. [clears throat] >> God.

[00:33:02]>> So, >> okay. Well, I don't like hearing her cartoon. Yeah. Well, that's just too bad because she doesn't like wearing headphones and we're all entitled to maximum comfort and perfect conditions at all >> all points in time. Nothing's ever a compromise to people like that. You know how our perception is that plane incidents have just taken this huge jump of unruly passengers. Do you know what year that was when we took the jump?

[00:33:27]COVID. I think it is very COVID related.

[00:33:31]It was 2021 when we all started flying again.

[00:33:35]They jumped 492%.

[00:33:38]They went from a,000 incidents in 2020 to 5900 in 2021.

[00:33:45]>> But isn't that because nobody was flying in 2020 or >> I guess we all got back in the planes and were all annoyed with each other >> and everybody was still at that time required to wear a mask.

[00:33:56]>> There was a mask thing. Half of those were mask incidents.

[00:33:59]>> I bet they were too.

[00:34:00]>> Yeah. people who thought it was crazy that we were wearing masks or people who >> people refused to wear masks.

[00:34:06]>> Oh yeah. And then other people being upset that they're not wearing a mask.

[00:34:10]>> I bet that's what it was.

[00:34:11]>> But yeah, that was the worst year. 2021, right?

[00:34:14]>> That was the worst year for pretty much everything. Either 2020 or 2021.

[00:34:18]>> It was all bad. But the last few years we've been right at around 2000. And that's twice as much as what it was before 2021.

[00:34:27]>> Yeah. So since then it just seems like >> everyone's gotten just a little more jerky.

[00:34:31]>> Mhm.

[00:34:32]>> Yeah. You just don't want to get in the middle of it. You just say, "Okay, I'm sorry. Let's just get there."

[00:34:37]>> And my whole theory, which has zero science or studies behind it, as far as I know, is that it has to do with technology and it has to do with that we're getting kind of used to the world being the way we want it. We got set up, we got options to make everything. We get things delivered to us. We just we're kind of used to not dealing with people and so people just become a huge annoyance and we lose all our skills and we actually have kind of we actually feel somewhat entitled to having the world the way we want it.

[00:35:08]>> And that's part of >> why do I have to make compromises to live in a society or live with other people. So we get really short-tempered with others.

[00:35:18]>> And we get really into No, an airline can't tell me to do something. If I want this window to shade up, it'll be up. If I don't want to wear a mask, and they have a rule, wear a mask, I'm going to go with what I want.

[00:35:30]>> I feel a flight attendant. What a tough >> There's no tough gig.

[00:35:33]>> I know it is.

[00:35:37][music] >> Okay. Shoes. [snorts] Shoes. Do you have to wear them on a plane?

[00:35:51]>> I think so, too. But all of these etiquette experts that I was reading about that issue were saying that you can take off your shoes, just not your socks. And I'm thinking, I think that the shoes ought to be a requirement, too.

[00:36:05]>> Nobody wants to smell your foot odor.

[00:36:08]>> They were saying, uh, and this is their argument. They're saying that the reason you leave your socks on, but you can take off your shoes. Um, you got to leave your socks on because you put yourself in danger by going barefoot because the floor is covered with bacteria and viruses.

[00:36:23]And the reason this falls apart to me is, okay, well, what about the bag or purse that I've stuffed on the floor and then up under the chair and then I pull it out and I set it on the chair next to me or I set it on my tray table that I then eat off of. It's like that's the same thing, >> right?

[00:36:41]>> It's touching all those viruses and bacteria, too. And I'm spreading it all over the cabin.

[00:36:46]>> Yeah. Shoes on.

[00:36:48]>> Yeah. I don't think you should disrobe in any way. And I don't think you should do any personal grooming on the plane.

[00:36:54]I've seen people take off their shoes. I think I talked about this on our radio show. This happened many years ago. Take off their shoes and clip their toenails on the row in front of me.

[00:37:04]>> It's the most disgusting thing. No clipping, no trimming, nothing like that on a plane.

[00:37:10]>> Reclining your seat. All of these etiquette experts said that you need to ask someone behind you.

[00:37:19]>> Good.

[00:37:20]>> Or at least take them into account.

[00:37:22]>> Yes.

[00:37:22]>> Like it's not your, in other words, don't be jerky and just think it's your immediate right to recline.

[00:37:28]>> Well, there's nothing worse than the quick lean back after take.

[00:37:31]>> I don't understand that either. It's always the guy who wants to just show you. You know, I I think that even if you're doing it without asking someone, that a little acknowledgement of there's other people in the world in the sense of you're going to do a slow lean back, right?

[00:37:46]>> For some reason, that's more palatable to me.

[00:37:48]>> That shows that you're not just But the guy who just immediately [laughter] >> I mean, as fast as you possibly can, as soon as he possibly can. I hate that. as violently as he can just basically and your diet coke goes flying up in the air and everything. [laughter] >> What's your problem? Never flown on a plane before. Okay. They built recline in this seat for a reason, dude.

[00:38:12]>> Oh, hate that guy. [laughter] >> But yes, look back behind you. If they have their tray down and they have a Coke or a meal on it and everything, you really should kind of wait, >> right?

[00:38:26]I never lean my seat back. I don't think I do either.

[00:38:29]>> I think it's an iffy one, though. I think that there's that's one where you need to talk to people and try to communicate with people.

[00:38:35]>> Unless I'm rolling in first class, then I'll put it back.

[00:38:38]>> All right, George, you've had this one happen to you. It's the asking to move seats and then what do you do in that case? You've always said that you air on the side. You always move seats for people.

[00:38:48]>> I have before. Yeah, >> I've moved before, too. But do you always do it?

[00:38:54]Yeah, I think I'm like one for one, I guess. Or maybe two for >> Oh, you've only been asked once.

[00:38:58]>> Maybe twice. I don't think I've ever done the turnown of No, it's okay. I really like my seat here. I mean, if someone's trying to sit next to their child or their wife, I've accommodated before and it's annoying and sometimes it's a worse seat, but yeah, it's like whatever. What if you're in first class, there's a child next to you, and then the mom comes up and says, "This is my son. I'd like to sit with him for the flight. I'm back in coach in a middle seat. Do you mind switching?

[00:40:27]>> So, etiquette experts say that this is what you should say if you don't want to change. No, thank you. I prefer to keep my seat and then just stop talking >> no matter what they say. [laughter] >> You want to switch seats. So then they said that uh and this is the thing is I've seen people before they ask to move seats, you know, not me. I've seen this happen a lot more where they ask someone else near me and uh and the person says, "No, thank you. I I prefer to keep my seat." They say, "No, thank you."

[00:41:00]They're polite. They're not jerky. But then the person immediately gets mad.

[00:41:05]somehow they had the right >> right >> to insist that person changed seats and I don't what's what is that attitude like why are they thinking that person is a jerk for not doing what they requested I don't know I guess we just place expectations on people sometimes oh yeah they'll switch because I'm going to ask nicely so therefore it's an automatic >> all right here's the other thing they that etiquette experts says if someone starts giving you the reasons why. Yeah, but this is, you know, my kid has a condition and I need to apply ointment all the time. And ointment [clears throat] says, "I appreciate why you'd want to sit together, but I'd like to stay in my seat. I understand all of the good reasons for me to trade seats, and you don't need to explain them."

It's very hard to get cancer medicines to the back of the eye like if you have a retinino blastto which is retina cancer.
