Your Eyes are Making Choices Without You
Added:Hey children, here are the signs your eyes are lying to you. Number seven, floaters. You ever look at a bright wall or the sky and see tiny little worms floating around? Then you try to look directly at them and they run away like they owe you money. Those are floaters.
They're tiny shadows from little clumps inside the gel of your eye. And because they're literally inside your eyeball, they move when your eye moves. Most of the time they're harmless, but it's still insane that your eye can just have random debris floating inside it and your brain literally ignores it. Number six, seeing your eyes move. Stand in front of a mirror and look from one eye to the other. Your eyes are moving.
But you'll never actually see them move.
That's because your brain temporarily blocks your vision during fast eye movements called saccades. If it didn't, the world would look blurry and chaotic every time your eyes jumped around. So, your brain just deletes that moment.
Every time you look somewhere else, reality goes missing for a tiny fraction of a second. And your brain stitches it back together like nothing happened.
Number five, eye twitches. Your eyelid starts twitching out of nowhere. Nobody else can see it, but to you it feels like your eye is trying to escape your face. This usually happens when tiny muscles around your eyes start spasming.
Stress, lack of sleep, too much caffeine, or staring at screens too long can trigger it. Basically, your body gets tired and your eyelid becomes the first employee to start protesting. It's not usually dangerous. So, don't worry.
Number four, afterimages. You look at a bright light, then you look away, and somehow the light is still there. That ghost image is called an afterimage.
Your eyes have light-detecting cells that react to color and brightness. But if you stare at something too intense for too long, those cells get tired. So, when you look somewhere else, your brain still sees the leftover signal.
Basically, your eyes got flashbanged and your brain kept the receipt. Number three, seeing stars after impact. You hit your head, bump your eye, or stand up too aggressively, and suddenly you see little stars. No, your vision didn't become magical. Those flashes happen when the cells in your retina or visual system get physically stimulated. Your brain doesn't know the difference between real light and a signal coming from pressure or impact. So, it just translates the signal as light. It can be harmless once in a while, but if it happens suddenly or keeps happening, don't be the main character and get it checked. Number two, why tears blur vision.
Crying already makes you emotionally unstable. Then your eyes decide to make the world blurry, too. Tears are supposed to protect and lubricate your eyes. A thin layer of tears actually helps you see clearly. But when you cry, there's too much fluid. The smooth surface of your eye gets uneven. Light scatters everywhere, and suddenly your vision turns into a sad watercolor painting.
Number one, visual snow.
Some people don't just see the world clearly, they see static, like tiny dots, grain, or TV noise covering everything, even in the dark. This is called visual snow. And the weird part is, it's not usually something inside the eye itself. It seems to come from how the brain processes visual signals.
So, while most people see a plain wall, some people see the wall with a permanent filter over it. Imagine reality having bad video quality your whole life. For some people, vision isn't clean. It's always a little bit haunted.
