[music] Welcome back. If you're just joining us, this is the news update on Trust TV. A look at our top stories. Once again, APC members protest alleged irregularities in senatorial primary and EFCC arrest former power minister Salim Man in Kaduna.
Now moving on to more stories. The recent wave of kidnappings and violence across Nigeria have triggered renewed concerns over the safety of schools nationwide. The latest incidents including the reported abduction of students and teachers in parts of Boruno and Oo states have further heightened fears about growing insecurity within the learning environments. Now these comes as armed criminal groups commonly referred to as bandits continue to target schools forcing temporary closures and promoting emergency security reviews in several states. A trust TV's Atante Azal reports.
>> The safe schools initiative introduced to strengthen the protection of schools, particularly in rural and border communities, was designed to provide safer learning environments for both students and teachers. However, concerns are mounting that the program has fallen short of expectations due to inadequate funding, weak security infrastructure, and poor surveillance systems. Speaking on the resurgence of school abductions, Dr. Steve Okokuri, a fellow of the Nigerian Army said the absence of proper funding and coordinated security structures continues to leave schools vulnerable to attacks.
>> One of the reasons that I think they're not adequately prepared because of uh limited funds, you know, and they have poor infrastructure. Most schools are not most schools don't even have perimeter fencing, you know. They don't have surveillance equipments that are supposed to be used to monitor the their schools within and around, you know. So, there's a lot that I think that schools need to put in place, especially public schools.
>> The reoccurring attacks have heightened fear and anxiety among parents, many of whom say they send their children to school each day uncertain of their safety. When children are abducted, you know, the clamor for for release, the need for everybody to want to pay ransom will be high because we are considering the fact that they are younger children.
They might not be able to survive it or they might not be able to withstand the pressure that they will go through. But in all of these I will my main concern is the traumatic experience that these children will face. The government need to do a lot but I think even we the citizen we have to do our own best well I feel concerned my mind is always there while I'm running my home basic normal activities and my mind is there we are not just happy that our kids are there and we think they're not safe but we just pray that everything should get in shape >> actually what is going on right now about the insecurity in Nigeria is actually a big problem because it's actually making us not to be able to give our children the best education that they deserve. You can imagine now you can't take your children to school of kidnapping um boo and the rest and this keep on going on in this country and the government are not quite about it.
>> Dr. Steve Okokri further highlighted measures schools can adopt to help safeguard students and reduce reoccurring security threat within the learning environment. What I think schools should have in place to see how to avoid uh these um criminal activities from happening around schools is to first of all have a perimeter fencing you know perimeter fencing and uh you have um uh controlled access points you know where exit and entry to the school premises are controlled and manned by security uh personnel and all that. And also we should have a trained personnel for them to be able to identify suspicious movement you know and they must be uh vigilant and we must have some surveillance uh system in place.
[clears throat] >> For many parents the learning is no longer just about education but whether their children will return home safely from school each day. As attacks persist, calls for urgent action to secure Nigeria's schools continue to grow louder. Tanti Aza, Trust TV News, Abuja.
We move to business now. Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Prochemicals has reduced the price of aviation fuel jet A1 from 1,715 NRA to 1,65 NRA per liter in a move aimed at easing operational cost for airlines and stabilizing Nigerian's aviation sector.
The refinery said the price court forms part of brother in interventions to support operators facing rising industry expenses with aviation fuel remaining one of the biggest cost drivers. The company also introduced a 30-day interestf free credit facility for marketers and airline operators backed by bank guarantees while adopting a narrower denominated pricing structure instead of dollarbased pricing.
According to the refinery, the measures are expected to improve liquidity in the aviation value chain, ensure more stable fuel supply and help moderate airs.
Industry operators had earlier raised concerns over sharp fluctuations in jet A1 prices which reportedly rose from about 900 naira per liter to as high as 3,300 naira triggering fears of possible flight disruptions.
In response, the federal government constituted a technical committee that recommended the inclusion of aviation fuel under the narrow for crude arrangement with suggested price ranges between 1,716 naira and 2,37 naira per liter depending on location.
Now away from Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded an estimated 131 death from 513 suspected Ebola cases as the outbreak continues to spread across the health minister.
I beg your pardon. I'll take that again.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded an estimated 131 deaths from 513 suspected Ebola cases as the outbreak continues to spread according to Health Minister Samuel Roger Ka. The latest figures mark a sharp increase from the previous total of 91 death linked to 350 suspected cases. The World Health Organization recently declared the outbreak an international public health emergency due to the rapid spread of the rare bundio strain of Ebola for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment. The outbreak began in the norththeastern Ituri province near the borders with Uganda and South Sudan and has since spread to other provinces including North Ku and the city of Guma.
Health officials however cautioned that the figures remain estimates as further laboratory testing is needed to confirm whether all reported death were caused by Ebola.
