[00:00:00]In England and Wales, national police guidance recommends [music] that body cams run a pre-event buffer, capturing at least 30 seconds of video and audio before the officer manually activates the camera. In Scotland, [music] Police Scotland's pre-record also captures 30 seconds, but video only, not audio, before activation. That matters because what happened before the visible confrontation can become the most important part [music] of any investigation. Saying, "I do not consent," does not usually stop a lawful [music] body cam. Police are normally expected to tell you they are recording where reasonable and practicable, but consent is not required where there is a legitimate policing purpose.

The footage is also not automatically evidence against you. If body cam [music] captures something that undermines the prosecution or supports your version of events, it may have to be disclosed to the defense [music] in criminal proceedings. If you want access to footage of yourself, you can request it through a subject access request, [music] but non-evidential recordings may be deleted after 31 days.
