GLP-1 medications are not simply weight loss drugs but rather treatments for insulin resistance, a chronic inflammatory disease that causes obesity and type 2 diabetes; these medications work by addressing the biological dysfunction in the body's insulin processing and the brain's reward center, which helps eliminate 'food noise' and makes healthy behaviors sustainable, rather than just suppressing appetite as a side effect.

Why GLP-1s aren’t “weight loss” meds. One of 100 reasons!Added:

As a maintenance tool.
>> Hey there, big fan. Listen, my degree is in PR, but you're a master, so I love your content. So, I want to comment on some things that you said, because one, I just want to make sure you're aware of these things, cuz I think it might just be good for you with what you do.
And two, I'd love your opinion.
Rosie O'Donnell is commenting in your comment section, and she has been on my show, my podcast, which is called The Plus Sides, where we focus on the disease of obesity, and basically how these medications treat it, including type 2 diabetes, because you may not know, but they are related. If anything, what we've learned from the doctors is they're basically the same.
It's called insulin resistance, so you may be on one side of an A1C you don't want to be on, which means you're a diabetic, like a type 2, or the other side, which maybe means you're pre-diabetic or pre-pre-diabetic, which is usually the obesity range. So, obesity usually leads to type 2 diabetes. So, people are spinning this as weight loss medication, but it's actually not. There are plenty of medications people can take to suppress their appetite. That is a side effect of these medications, but what they actually do is treat insulin resistance.
Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disease, which is what I've learned from doctors on my show, and it's caused by insulin resistance, which means your body cannot process insulin efficiently if you have it. People with obesity have it. People with type 2 diabetes have it.
Because our body doesn't know what to do, we store it in fat around our body, which is why people with obesity constantly regain their weight. It comes down to a brain issue, and this medication addresses the biological dysfunction, and then helps address the brain issue. What Oprah is actually saying, just so you know, when she talks about the easy way out, is she was saying because of like diet culture and all the crap, when people approached her about this medication and using it, she thought, "Eh, it's the easy way out." Why? Because she's a victim of diet culture. I'm sure she does believe in nutrition.
She's talked about that like her entire career. But, she also like a cake. And the problem is, if you have obesity and insulin resistance, and you do those things, it usually makes you eat more and more and more because of your brain.
Because your body doesn't work right.
The medications cause delayed gastric emptying, which is what makes you feel fuller longer. And that change triggers something in the brain. It's the reward center, which means people with obesity don't continue to have our brain working against us to make us constantly feel like we have to eat. And then the constant need to feel like we need to restrict ourselves, which eventually leads to us gaining our weight back.
When you take these medications and you have insulin resistance, which is obesity, which Oprah has, it rights the wrong, and weight loss follows. We also talk about food noise. Rosie talks about it on my episode. It's the constant thought of food. You could be in the middle of one meal, and you feel like you're planning the next one or what you're going to eat next. Biological dysfunction.
This fixes it. And then, when all of that is addressed, all of these other health things start to happen. But in the media, they continue to spin this as a weight loss product. And even insurance puts it in the same category as chronic weight management, which is treating obesity. And for FDA approval, these medications are under this chronic weight management. But it's continued to be called weight loss, and a lot of insurances have this thing called weight loss exclusions, which because of that, they won't have this medication to treat people with obesity. And there's also people who have like PCOS or Hashimoto's or all these different other health conditions that cause insulin resistance, that cause obesity.
And that's where we're at as a country, as the world.
So, I'm doing this podcast, and I'm trucking along, and things are starting to pop off. A lot of it's thanks to Rosie. She really helped elevate the status. We even had Dr. Rachel on, which was on Oprah's State of Weight episode to talk about the cognitive behavioral piece of being treated with these medications. How to unwind it, all the trauma that you've had, right? How to make changes because now your body's in a place to be able to receive. Dr. Rachel consulted on The Whale. Do you know that movie about obesity? So, the problem is we can't get like the spin in the media to get out of this whole weight loss thing. Like even you kind of fell for it, you know? And I suspect that's just cuz that's what you see all the time, you know? So, how do we get people like you and other people to quit seeing it like that and see it like I'm explaining it, which is based on facts, science, and data? But nobody wants to write about our podcast that's doing positive things. We actually have people from our community here on Tik Tok that come on and tell their stories. And then I have on experts like endocrinologists, you know, bariatric surgeons, obesity specialists, cognitive behavioral therapists, dieticians, so that we can all validate those experiences with facts, science, and data. And then we can also really, really work forward to removing the stigma.
How do we do that? Cuz there's such a huge demand for knowledge. People take these medications and things change for them. Even Rosie says on my show, I said, "Would you have believed this if you hadn't have taken it?" And she's like, "No." And Oprah had that special, right? Where she learned from those doctors, you know? And heard the testimonies like I have on my show of other people who have struggled with obesity, then I can't help but wonder if she was like, "Maybe this is okay." So, Oprah has lost weight plenty of times in her life, up and down, up and down cuz she has a chronic disease of obesity. So, what she's doing is getting on a maintenance dose. So, when she says she's in maintenance, that's a real thing. And now she has experienced no food noise, which is what I was explaining earlier, which Rosie, myself, and many, many others have experienced being on these medications, having it eliminated. And look at all the things we've been able to do.
All those eat less, move more, all that crap now sticks because our bodies work right. It's biological. It's a disease.
How do we change this? How do we change this? Take a look at the podcast. It's on YouTube. It's called The Plus Sizes.
I'm going to show you right here. Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear.
I'd love for you to get on the right side of history with us.
