Cascadia slow slip events are gradual fault movements that can trigger elevated tremor activity in the southern Cascadia region, particularly affecting the Gorda plate subduction zone beneath Northern California; these slow slip events, monitored through epicenter tracking, represent a form of aseismic fault movement that redistributes stress and may influence seismic activity patterns in adjacent tectonic zones.

Cascadia Slow Slips.. Northern California Earthquake activity.Thursday Night.
Added:Good evening everyone. Welcome back here to a Thursday night. It is the Earthmaster out here just about 11 PM California time here, June 18th, 20126.
Uh latest activity here on the globe shows a 3.0 3.0 out here. It looks like uh across South America area there in the green flag, 257 kilometers deep. That's a deep one. Uh, also some activity here off the coast of uh, Northern California. It looks like now little bit of air difference here far as that magnitude rate compared to uh, the USGS showing a looks like it's a 2.8 out here along the Gorda ridges. EMC reporting what looks like a 4.4 out here across the Gorder Ridges. So, I will double check that and see what we got.
Um, I don't know if it's a secondary quake or just uh they're showing something larger than what the uh USGS is showing. It does look like there was two earthquakes out here.
Uh, this one uh earlier today, this one's a more recent one it looks like. Um, I'm really surprised USGS isn't reporting it, but it is reported here from the EMSC model and the source parameters are provided by the Germany folks here, the GFZ uh, agency. So, we'll see if USGS um, picks up on that or not. Either way, it's a spreading seafloor center out here, which should further stress the southern end of the Cascadia. Most of the time when we get earthquake activity, it does that adds further strain down here across the southern end. Uh we will double check the trimmer counts here. See what we got far as the slow sip event map goes. 24 24 epicenters way down south here into the southern end of the Cascadia underneath northern California.
Uh so that could be why we're uh seeing elevated tremor because the result of activity out here. It kind of pushes what's left here of the Gorda plate further underneath this area, the southern end of the Cascadius abduction zone.
Uh nothing big going on there for now.
Uh San Francisco area, we got three earthquakes here this afternoon. Uh 1.6, 1.3, and a 2.2. Those look like they're on the uh Calaveris fault just off the Cal. There's another segment that runs north here, but not shown on the map.
So, a couple earthquakes there in the Bay Area today after Oh, it's still pretty quiet. That's still a little unusually quiet there for the Bay.
Uh further down south here, Southern California looking a little spotty.
Nothing big. 12.5 in the uh Ridgerest area, just outside of Rididgerest. Got uh some small microquake activity stirring up there. Uh but nothing big. Pacific Northwest relatively quiet. Yellowstone National Park here, a couple earthquakes from last night and this morning. Uh but we will verify see if that uh is indeed the case. Hopefully these folks are working tonight.
I don't want to see any There we go. I was going to say I don't want to see any issues going on with their website. Uh yeah, nothing really new to report.
Those were all from last night there. A little cluster of activity at Yellowstone, but since then, as you can see, it's pretty quiet out there. Not a whole lot happening.
Uh oil fields just a lot of earthquake activity, but nothing new to report.
There's that four-pointer 4.4 up in the Canada area. and though they don't really get four pointers up there all the time like that. So, uh it's definitely somewhat I would say of a a noteworthy event outside of the Quebec area, Montreal down south. Um you know, just kind of sitting up here in this uh little bay or do they call it a river up here? St. Lawrence River. Anyway, a little bit of activity stirred up there this morning. Um let's check in on the Philippines. See what we got here for activity.
Still getting a lot of activity down here. You know, that could continue for a little bit, but I do think the squeeze is getting put on it. Far as the Philippines area goes, there's multiple subduction zones and troughs around the area of the Philippines, north and south, east and west. Um, so I do think that 7.8 um may have shifted some uh stress out here.
A lot happening down south. Not a whole lot north though. Look at that. Manila trench, Taiwan into Japan. Very quiet still. Good cluster of activity here into the Indonesia area. Just a huge crunch going on right now. Uh New Zealand, it looks like there's another four-pointer down here. Three-pointer and a four-pointer. It's been moving.
New Zealand's been moving. And their last big earthquake out here was back in 17 uh 1717, I believe, is the date. Uh I think a mid7 out here. mid-se magnitude earthquake on the uh alpine fault here.
We've had, you know, several other earthquakes since then. Um but this area out here is fairly well primed and loaded for a a decent size event and uh they've been picking up quite a bit of earthquake activity on that P plate boundary recently. Nothing big for now, but it is moving.
Uh let's see here what else we got. Some deeper activity here across the uh Himalayas.
Nothing big going on out here across this area of the world far as earthquake activity goes. Central America, Middle America trench region. Just some twos and threes like we always see. Nothing new to report.
Uh let's see what the USGS is showing up north here for Alaska since that five pointer this morning. That was early this morning about 7 o'clock my time.
Really not a whole lot happening. just some smaller microquake activity up there.
Uh let's see.
But yeah, that's uh not a whole lot. I mean, there's a lot of activity, but nothing big. Fairly well clustered here along this subduction zone, the Illutian Trench.
Let's see. We'll double check Hawaii out here. Just see how we're looking on the inflation model.
I'm sure we're getting up there in terms of the inflation. Not quite to an eruption yet.
We'll double check this, see where we're at. Yeah, we're just almost almost halfway here uh compared to what we seen last eruption far as the inflation stage goes. So, we do have a few days before we see that window uh come about there far as the eruption on the big island of Hawaii.
uh space weather activity. See see if we can catch those sunspots yet. There's a couple big ones coming around the southeastern limb. It does look like we got, you know, some active conditions coming up here. Notice these bright features out over here. Those are two decent size sunspots. How do we know?
Well, we can kind of kind of take a peek there on the far side. This is the most recent imagery. Uh but it's still even so it's about a day behind. Look at this massive area. Almost looks like it's joining here with this separate one.
Excuse me. Uh the previous image showed these two separated, but these are a fairly massive sunspot group. So, it's going to be interesting to watch here in the coming days as that further rotates towards the eastern limb. And it will be in the Earth directed view here. Can see it spotted down here across the uh magnetogram image.
See what we got. I can just barely see this frontal uh sunspot here at the leading edge of it. So, we'll we'll know for sure. We'll know for certain if this is going to spark up some solar flaring activity in the days ahead once we see a little bit better view of those sunspots coming around. Right now, pretty low though far as the flaring activity goes.
80% chance for a C flare, M flare at 15, X flare at one. We're just hovering way down into the beeflare category here recently. No major wars in the forecast for now. We'll see if we can't get that to change here. Uh possibly with some active conditions. We'll see. Uh this is for Friday. Not a whole lot of severe weather out there. The marginal risk in the green. Looks like there's a little tornado risk uh across the extreme east there. Little bit of wind, maybe a little bit of hail threat out there for Friday. Uh now for Saturday, a little bit more severe weather shift over here to the west around the Kansas area. It looks like in portions of uh southern Nebraska. Got a tornado potential there.
Looks like it could be some strong tornadoes as well. Big- time wind and a little bit of hail. Well, that's actually some big time hail threat out there uh for your Saturday. Sunday, it looks like the same area. So, it's going to be a fairly busy weekend here for severe weather.
All right, seismograph stations. Here's a little earthquake on the Philippines showing up. Let's see which one is that.
Looks like they have it listed over here.
Still pretty active over here. 4.0.
There's that one. Uh there's 5.3. Fairly new earthquake there along the Philippine trench. There just a lot of uh you know subduction zones over here.
and it's definitely starting to show.
You know, most of the activity has been south here, but I'm more concerned about areas north. There's a couple different trench zones aside from the Katabato Trench where that 7.8 struck recently.
Got some uh troughs up north here, the Manila trench and areas uh towards Taiwan that we have to watch as well.
And it's been unusually quiet out here right now. So, it's a little concerning, but uh we'll continue to watch it and monitor it. Have a good one, folks.
We'll see you guys out here in the morning for the Friday morning update.
Take care and have a good night out there.
