Meachum’s floating school is a brilliant example of how intellectual audacity can turn a legal loophole into a vessel for liberation. It proves that when the law is used as a cage, the truly resilient will find freedom in the fine print.

The Floating School: How John Barry Meachum Outsmarted Missouri Law #blackhistoryAjouté :
A black man built a school on a boat cuz teaching our children on land was a crime. In 1847, Missouri passed a law making it illegal for black people to learn to read or write. They raided the churches, arrested the teachers, and seized the books.
They wanted us powerless, but they forgot one thing.
The Mississippi River.
John Berry Meachum, a man who had already bought his own freedom, looked at the water and saw a loophole. Because the river was federal property, Missouri law didn't apply there. So, Meachum bought a steamboat, outfitted it with desks and a library, and launched the Freedom School.
Every morning children would row out into the middle of the river, risking arrest just to learn their own names.
Meachum proved that when they closed the doors on land, we build a bridge on the water. What should tell me in the comments, why are they still trying to ban books today when Meachum already gave us the blueprint for how to outsmart them? Comment freedom to honor his legacy.
