The famous quote 'Let them eat cake' (qu'ils mangent de la brioche) was never spoken by Marie Antoinette; it was actually written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his Confessions around 1765 about an unnamed 'great princess.' Marie Antoinette was only nine years old in Vienna at the time. Decades later, during the French Revolution, a pamphlet falsely attributed this quote to her on the eve of the march on Versailles, giving France a face to blame for its suffering.

Marie Antoinette and the Cake That Was Never EatenAñadido:
Madam, this came from Paris before dawn.
They are printing your name beneath the line, "Kill mongrel and the lapdog." I have never spoken those words.
And yet Paris will believe them.
They cannot accept that a queen might be kind, madam.
They never could.
Madam, they say the queen [music] laughed when told of our hunger.
They say she said, "Let them eat cake."
And God forgive her.
My children eat the bark from the trees and she eats cake.
I do not blame her, madam.
I blame the men who carry her name to the gutter.
Jean-Jacques, what do you write that makes you smile so to the candle?
>> [music] >> A great princess of my own invention, Therese. Marie Antoinette is a child of nine in Vienna. They have your name on every pamphlet now.
Paris is marching on Versailles by morning.
Then let them remember the cake. France will need a face to forgive itself. Mine will do.
Then I shall stand beside you at the gate, Antoinette.
We will face them together.
