Cold front brings rain chances to parts of New Mexico on Mother's Day

[00:00:01]Weatherwise, it sounds beautiful out there. Sounds like a pretty good weekend in >> pretty nice Mother's Day weekend for sure. It's going to get a little bit warm tomorrow. May see a couple gusty winds out there. In parts of New Mexico, we'll see a chance for rain on Sunday, but this is not enough to uh keep you indoors if you had any outdoor plans for your Mother's Day weekend. It's still going to be a beautiful weekend out there for sure. You can still see those snowcapped peaks up there in the northern mountains looking out from the top of the Angel Fire Ski Resort.

[00:00:28]Beautiful to see this, especially this time of year when typically we'd be towards the end of our snow pack already. But after we had some snow earlier this week and even late last week, it's leaving those mountain peaks.

[00:00:40]Still covered in snow for now, but the temperatures over the next few days.

[00:00:44]We're going to be melting that snow pack very quickly. Even this afternoon, everybody was back above average today.

[00:00:50]The coolest it got were the mid70s up in northeastern New Mexico, but even Durango and Cortez were up into the 80s.

[00:00:56]82 today in Farmington, 90s down in Carlsbad, Deming, close to 90 in Roswell. Got up to 84 officially today here in Albuquerque. We're only sitting about 10 degrees cooler than that right now. But up in Santa Fe and Grants, we're down in the mid50s. Still in the 60s in Farmington, even Durango. 70s in southern New Mexico up to Sakoro. But around the metro, temperatures range anywhere from 74 up the Sunport to 68 in the South Valley and Rio Rancho. Balin at 66 degrees and it's in the low 60s in the East Mountains. Temps in the 50s out in Morardi. Tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, it's going to be warmer all across New Mexico with temperatures climbing more into the 80s and even more 90s into southern and eastern parts of the state. But you may notice all that green on radar out there tomorrow. Well, there's going to be just enough moisture in the atmosphere to produce some evaporating rain. The day is going to start out sunny and clear, but by the afternoon, we're getting a lot of these cumulus clouds to develop. And some of those are going to try and produce rain.

[00:01:55]But we have some very dry air down here at the ground. So, as that raindrop falls from the cloud base into that dry layer of air, it evaporates. And that change in phase, that change in state actually causes the air to become cooler, which is heavier, and it sinks down to the ground very quickly. and that could result in some locally windy and dusty conditions tomorrow afternoon.

[00:02:16]Heading into Mother's Day, a backdoor cold front will be moving into the eastern half of the state moving south Saturday night into early Sunday and that'll bring in a lot better moisture.

[00:02:25]By the afternoon, we'll produce this chance for isolated showers and thunderstorms across the eastern half of New Mexico where we'll also see cooler temperatures Sunday afternoon. But by Monday, high pressure starts building to the west of us, and that's going to bring in warmer temperatures all across New Mexico once again to start early next week. We head into Tuesday next week, and that high pressure moves overhead. And that's going to bring some of us the warmest weather we've seen so far this year as highs will be climbing up into the 80s and 90s across nearly the entire state. We'll even be up into the mid 80s early next week in southern Colorado. But you'll notice temperatures dip a little bit as we head into the end of next week. That's that high pressure system sliding off to the east, bringing in some moisture up into New Mexico to just increase the cloud cover for most of us Wednesday and Thursday, but it should also bring in a few isolated showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. But highs in southwestern New Mexico are going to stay in the mid or mid 90s most days for the next week. In southeastern New Mexico, from 95 tomorrow in Roswell to 82 on Sunday with that chance for rain up to nearly 100° Tuesday. And that cloud cover, it's only going to keep temperatures a couple degrees cooler as we head into the end of next week. We'll also see that drop in Las Vegas with a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon. But like I said, these storms are still going to be pretty hit or miss. So, it's not going to rain out any outdoor plans most of us have as it'll be dry just west of there. We'll likely have to wait till Wednesday or Thursday next week to see that chance for rain into northern New Mexico. But the East Mountains could also see a stray shower or two develop on Sunday. Here in the metro, we're going to be in the mid 80s all weekend long. Getting a bit breezy though at times tomorrow and Sunday night and then up to around 90 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday with a small chance for rain next
