Franklin's Gull is a rare migrant bird species in northwest Ohio that can be identified by its distinctive black hood with white eye arcs, white spots on the tips of its tail and wings, and reddish beak; this species represents a significant 'lifer' (first-time sighting) for birders in the region, demonstrating the importance of recognizing key identification features when encountering rare species during birding expeditions.

A RARE Bird FOUND at The Biggest Week in American Birding!Added:
What's a bird in Earth's video without a rare bird in it? Come on now.
It's the big day. And actually, it's the big day for burning. And uh I'm here at McGee Marsh to start off the day. So let's go see what we can find out here today. Going to do a bit more of a normal video, more authentic, I guess. So heard there's a golden winged warbler right over here. So let's see if we can find it.
It's crazy how birdie it is right now.
It's awesome. Just listen to this.
A great blue heron fly up from like right there and then up and hit that tree. Just hit the tree and then just kept then just kept flying. I don't I don't know. Unable to find the golden wing. Hopefully it'll turn up later so I can go find it.
It wasn't long before I spotted my first warbler of the day. Black greed and American red start. So, it's pretty cool.
This black green warbler put on quite a show. It was even foraging about a foot away from my head right back here. Pretty cool.
It's very birdy, but like not seeing much. Just a lot of salt.
>> I continued on the boardwalk and even spotted a cavity nesting duck.
>> Wood ducks up there. So, it's pretty neat. Up there in the nest, I'm pretty sure. So, yeah.
forgot about the big sit going on where this person sits here for quite a while looking for birds. So, uh yeah, that's pretty cool though. Boardwalk actually was pretty slow. I don't know why, but uh it's all right. So, we're going to go check out the Goose Haven Estuary Trail and see if we can find anything over there.
So strange. There's not a ton happening.
Like I was expecting a little bit more like variety, more quantity and stuff like that, but not a ton. It's weird.
Bunch of American white pelicans out there as always.
>> I then spotted a first ofear warbller.
>> Just had a nice little planetary warbler. Uh he just sitting up in this tree. I almost didn't even notice him.
That guy had to pointed out cuz like he wasn't singing and then he eventually started singing like he is right there.
But uh pretty cool. I remember this place.
This was the site of the curtains wobble last year. So, it's pretty cool.
A couple forers turns, I believe. Uh, correct me on that, but uh I'm pretty sure they're forers turns.
I then made my way back to the McGee Marsh boardwalk only to come across a large mass of people.
>> Commotion was for a chestnut side war.
That's crazy. Biggest weak American birthing for you.
>> I then came across a controversial warbler species.
>> A northern water thrush down that way.
Uh, not going to lie, it looked a lot like a Louisiana water thrush. It did sing a northern water thrush song, but must just be a weird variation, I guess.
Hey, the blue skies came out. Sweet.
>> Yeah, I got some great looks at that magnolia wer. That was pretty neat looking, you know.
Yeah, it was like right up next to my face.
I think that'll wrap up the day at McGee Marsh, unless something rare pops up, in which I will come back here if I'm in the area.
>> I then made my way over to McGee Marsh's neighboring marsh, which is Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.
>> What seemed like forever, finally found a parking spot in the extra overflow parking. Man, that was brutal. There a lot of people here. But uh I am at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge hoping to find just some more birds I guess. So let's go.
I get that it's almost 1:00, but like there's like no birds out here. It's crazy how like quiet it is besides the wind. Like what?
Give me make me a little upset. It's May 9th and I should be seeing stuff, but I'm not. So, what you going to do though? You can't make the birds come.
Also, all of these videos are being recorded or like all the bird videos, they're being recorded with this new uh L Panasonic Lumix FZ80, which is a pretty cool camera. Uh yeah, that's what I've been shooting all the bird videos on. So, yeah. Let me know if I should do a full review on this though, on this camera. I then spotted a nocturnal species.
>> Just got an eastern screech owl up in this tree up here. And uh he's just kind of chilling. Yeah. Pretty cool though.
>> New shirt inside Mommy Bay State Park.
It's the uh BSBO with the hooded warbler on it. It's pretty cool.
I had one last stop for the day. I am on the hunt for yet another rare bird species. Let's see if we can find this thing.
Well, would you look at that.
I have gotten the lifer Franklin's skull. Woohoo. Yeah. The Franklin skull is a rare migrant in northwest Ohio.
They can be identified by their black hood with white eye arcs. They also have white spots on the tips of their tail and wings. Also a reddish beak. The Franklin's Gall may not be the prettiest of lifers, but they all matter. Well, we got the Franklin's Gaul, which is a pretty rare bird around here. So, uh I hope you guys enjoy today's video. If you could please like and subscribe and I'll see you in the next one. As well as happy birding.
