Diplomatic pressure alone often fails to achieve desired policy outcomes when the target nation has alternative strategic partners and economic relationships, as demonstrated by the 2025 US-China summit where China refused to cut off Iran despite US demands, revealing that effective international diplomacy requires understanding the full spectrum of a nation's strategic interests and economic dependencies.

“Iran is suffering”: Trump fumes in anger as China upbraids USAñadido:
Well, well, well, we called it. Trump flew into Beijing with Pete Hoekstra, a bag of trade deals, Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and enough optimism to fill the Great Hall of the People.
He wanted one thing above everything else.
China to pull the plug on Iran.
To leave Tehran financially strained, diplomatically orphaned, and finally forced to the table on American terms.
Beijing smiled, Beijing nodded.
Winning the boo, sorry, she sent him home with a something shiny to distract him.
The American media, not us, is actually calling it a disappointment.
A swing and a miss dressed up in a summit language and handshake photographs. [music] Trump wanted Xi to turn off Iran's oxygen. Xi decided the price of that was something Washington wasn't ready to pay.
So, Iran stays in the fight, still armed, still enriching, still standing, but now everyone knows the limits of American pressure a little more clearly than before. The US President Donald Trump has wrapped up his two-day Beijing visit and is heading back to Washington with considerably less than what he came for.
In a major claim for the American media, he stated that China has promised to stop assisting Iran.
A breakthrough, he calls it. A major win for the Middle East peace process.
Remarkable claim, especially given what was happening on the other side of the same building.
So, while Trump and Xi were sitting together over a wine, China's foreign ministry was simultaneously posting on X in real time, doubling down on its position.
China's position on the Iran situation is very clear. This is their ex-statement.
The conflict has inflicted severe losses on people of Iran and the regional countries. Now, that is not a country that is distancing itself from Tehran.
That is a country telling you precisely where it stands while your president is still on its soil. Also, there were no official commitments on Iran.
No rare earth resolution were announced.
Those export controls have been quietly suffocating the American industry since April 2025 and will continue to do so.
The Chinese media did not even mention Iran war once across the two full days of the summit coverage.
Not once. Yes, not even once.
Now, that is not an oversight. That is a carefully considered editorial decision.
She spoke of long-term resets and stable trade ties. Trump hunted for immediate wins. The two leaders in one room with entirely different timelines and entirely different definition of success were there.
Trump called it an unofficial, incredible visit where a lot of good has come out of it. But, on the ground, Iran still continues to fight, rare earth metal remains blocked, [music] and now US is planning to hit Chinese oil companies. Well, if the summit was so good, why exactly this decision? The US left Beijing with less than it arrived with. And Trump is aware of that.
And if president means anything, definitely a more brutal and forceful response towards both China and Iran is now being planned behind the closed doors.
So, what can happen? Well, only time will tell, but American diplomacy was fair and square embarrassed by Beijing and the [music] US may My bad must retaliate.
