The Quad (India, Japan, Australia, and the United States) maintains a consistent strategy centered on ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific, with foreign ministers meetings focusing on energy security and navigation routes; India plays a critical role as a maritime democracy in this grouping, particularly in addressing challenges like the Strait of Hormuz closure that threatens energy security and economic stability.

Quad Meeting Focuses On Indo-Pacific Security ChallengesAjouté :
NDTV India's Jessica Tanuja joins us for more on this. Well, Jessica, with political transitions in both the US and Japan, how significant is the Quad's foreign ministers meeting in shaping the grouping's future strategy in the Indo-Pacific? And what can be expected out from this?
>> Well, the main strategy of the Quad has centered around the Indo-Pacific, and free and open Indo-Pacific is what the Japanese had proposed back in 2008, and in 2017 the first leader summit had taken place. So, and it was the, you know, it was the President Donald Trump's, you know, first presidency when the Quad leaders meeting had taken place, and it has continued ever since except for time during COVID. It was done virtually, but otherwise it has mostly been very consistent with its outlook and its agenda. And of course, this time around you could expect the agenda to be dominated by energy security as well as navigation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Of course, India has been an important partner in in the Quad grouping, which also includes Japan, Australia, and the United States. It plays a vital role as we've seen in the past and many exercises that have taken place between the Quad countries in the recent past as well. But at the same time, their focus has been on the economic aspect of what is to be delivered when it comes to free and open Indo-Pacific and navigation routes. And just to give our viewers a bit of perspective, with the Indo-Pacific focus, it of course talks about the maritime traffic.
And as you know, when the Quad grouping converges on issues and important, you know, agendas of cooperation such as critical mineral critical minerals, as well as semiconductor, it is vital that those sea routes are open and free for navigation, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, where India plays a critical role. So, any disruption to maritime traffic, which has been taking place at this point because of the closure of Strait of Hormuz, there is an energy crisis. All the leaders are of course going to all the foreign ministers, pardon me, are of course going to discuss this at length as to what the new you know, sort of way out would be to to look at this particular situation in a moment of crisis, which is the world is dealing with, specially when economic security seems to be threatened because of the energy crisis due to various maritime choke points. And these are maritime democracies as they call themselves, and that is their intended purpose to ensure there's a free and open Indo-Pacific. That is what the strategy of all the Quad nations has been in so far.
>> All right. So, India is definitely hosting the Quad meeting at the time when the world is facing maritime challenges. Thank you so much, Jessica, for all those details.
