For the next 4 hours, a team cuts into your body, moves your organs, saws through bone, and you are not there for a single second of it. No dreams, no darkness, no sense of time passing. Then your eyes open and four hours are simply gone like someone cut a piece out of your life and you never felt the scissors. Millions of people do this every single day and treat it like nothing. But here's what nobody says out loud. We still don't fully know how it works. Anesthesia is one of the most common things in all of medicine. And the question of where you actually go for those hours is still one of the biggest open mysteries in science. So let's walk into that dark together and find out exactly what we do know.
Because the honest answer is stranger than sleep. And by the end, it's going to be stranger than death. First, let's kill the biggest myth because it's hiding how strange this really is.
