This radio discussion examines Nigeria's response to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where Senator Osho Mle proposed revoking South African company licenses, which critics argue ignores the economic reality that many Nigerian businesses also operate in South Africa. The hosts highlight how political figures often prioritize political gain over practical governance, as evidenced by the case of Nigeria Airways pensioners who have not received their 36 billion Naira pension since 2004 despite presidential approval. The discussion emphasizes that effective governance requires leaders to balance economic interests with humanitarian concerns, and that political rhetoric often fails to address fundamental issues affecting citizens' livelihoods.

is today. I'm Sheriff Cuadri >> and I'm Jimmy. This a good morning.
>> Uh just so you know, uh this show is being streamed on Facebook and on YouTube. Uh you can watch search for Nigeria Info 99.3 if you like to watch on Facebook and on YouTube. Let's begin.
Vanguard newspaper xenophobic attacks Nigerians Nigerians lives more important than investment. O shal.
>> Okay. I I um I watched part of the program yesterday on arrive when my good Abu Ruffy Ruffy on fire when he took on Senator Sh and um initially I said this morning that if if it comes out in the papers I'll take out a lot of time to once again explain um the the explain the illogical stance of um Senator Sham which is either born out of ignorance or mischief one of the two but when I when I then heard Sheriff at 6:00 and I you know he had all the phone calls that came in I said look don't bother I think I think people do understand the issues at hand but my bigger fear is that um Osho Mle is not is not a is not a small fry in the Senate. Indeed, somewhere at the back of my mind, I've have I've tipped him as a possible aspirant for the seat of the Senate President.
If that should happen, that would be a very dangerous um a very dangerous thing to to happen if and when it happens because with due respect, Senator Shim has been known to react, you know, he has what you call gra, you know, he has this impulsive reaction to things. I remember when he was a governor and you had this widow um the widow he had the problem with and I remember the incident of die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die he told the woman to die he retrace his steps and apologize I hope he will retrace his steps on this issue um because it's not I don't think it sounds right like Rufi said yesterday above all things you your your government is predicated on foreign investment. How does it sound that that in response to an issue which was not by the government mark you was a group of a group of urchins and so on and so forth.
you had this incident happen like that and that is what your reaction is that is the license of all all um South African uh based companies should should should be revoked forgetting of course that you also have loads of Nigerian like one listener said you have loads of Nigerian businesses that are also in South Africa. I think somebody who loves Senator Chal should actually sit him down and tell him not to one way to avoid things like this is you better not say anything until you've studied the ter because he says uh he he says according to him he says that I'm aware that MTN is quoted and therefore Nigerian shareholders can hold on but we take away the South African rights. So he says we should we should nationalize the with Nigerian chairs. We should take over the whatever. And and I said where is all this coming from? What what about the legal angle to it the the larger diplomatic whatever and then playing to the gallery and talking about Nigerian lives. How does Senator Shle feel at the end of every month when he gets his paycheck?
Only God knows how many millions and he has luckily he's a labor man. He knows the minimum wage. How does he feel when he reconciles the two at that time? Are Nigerian lives more important to him than the salary? I mean the the the political class unfortunately worldwide always play on sentiments to deceive the people because worldwide mostly the the political class have generally failed in countries where they have not failed their people have held them by the jugular and these xenophobic attacks I'm not making any excuse for them of course not nobody would but they are worldwide And that is because resources are getting scarce and they are not evenly distributed. That is the best official way you can put it. Anyway, back to this uh before I go on on a complete waste of time this morning. I I I'd like to say that Nigerians from what from the phone calls I got, I'm at peace with myself. I I think they understand the situation.
So, we might want to move on to except you have a question to ask me.
>> No, no, I don't. Um yes, the phone calls this morning seem to suggest that Nigerians understood um what's going on but yesterday on the social except of course we're saying that Nigerians on the social media are different from Nigerians on on radio. Nigerians on social media, majority of them seem to um support what a sham uh is saying, his position and they seem to be attacking anybody who who who was against what um Oshame said yesterday on social media.
>> Well, I I didn't monitor social. I'm just saying I'm just saying I'm just saying that I mean yes this was I mean I witnessed what you said this morning cuz I hosted the show.
>> Yes.
>> And I also saw what went on on social media yesterday. So I'm I'm not exactly sure if we have a balance.
>> I'm going to shock you.
>> Shock me.
>> The I believe very strongly that most of the things you see in the social media are actually pushed.
>> Politicians pushed. Okay.
>> Yeah. their push their politicians have have um ready soldiers at hand and and it's not impossible that supporters APC supporters saying don't let him go down whatever and we'll begin this push it's not impossible but if you look at it logically if you are educated and exposed it doesn't even sound rational you know it doesn't sound rational and like I said the the few people who called in this which the air was you could see that they understood the issues. Everybody condemns this xenophobic killings. Of course, but you don't burn a house because you have a rat running around.
You look for rat poison or whatever.
>> You can't I mean, you don't create a world crisis.
You start seizing assets and and so on and so forth. It's under which how are you going to do it? M >> and part of the problem also is because I'm sorry to say it goes back to some of what I've also said about appointments.
Our foreign service is not topnotch.
Our foreign service is not topnot. They should have visibly stepped in immediately to get a reaction. He he he claimed that the reaction from Ramaposa was was slow.
I don't know to be honest with you. I don't know if that was true or not. But I know that Ramaposa himself doesn't know what to do with the with with the situation in it might not be lack of interest but he doesn't know his hands are tied >> because of his political interest. Well, partly because of his political interest, but partly because they created they have also created this situation.
What is it all about? It's all about South Africans who don't have jobs and see other and remember it wasn't against Nigerians.
It was all Africans.
>> Mhm.
>> So that again Nigerians are mostly targeted >> are mostly targeted but all other African. And guess what? the same thing is about to replicate itself in Ghana >> unless care is taken. So there is something fundamentally wrong. We are not looking out out for and the same could happen in Nigeria. The way we are going, I'm not encouraging anybody to do anything. But with the level of hunger and we did the same thing in in 83, 82 or 83 when we packed all the Ghanaians and put them in trailers and drove them across the border.
Where do you think the word Ghana must go came from? M but I heard I read somewhere that they did it first.
>> I can't remember and I was I was walking then.
>> I read somewhere that they did it first >> but but the problem the problem well I don't know if they did it first but the problem then was that okay a lot of teachers and drivers and whatever were of Ghanian origin and Nigerians felt that the Ghanaians were taking their jobs and the same thing is about to replicate itself now.
the same thing. So it's a worldwide phenomenon. It's not it's not peculiar.
No, it's not.
>> It's not peculiar to to to to South Africa. So I mean I I like I said over and above everything is an elder statement man. He's older than me. He should be guided in the things he says.
He should we should be able to look at long-term implications. If a man like that becomes the Senate president, God help this country. M do you think he has an endgame >> and that's why he's doing this wants to he wants to be a man of the people.
Unfortunately, you you cannot eat your cake and have it and keep it in the fridge.
He is a carryover from his labor days.
He wants the people to love him. He wants to be a man of the people. But the people are not blind. Now you have to make up your mind on which side of the divide you want to be.
>> He said he said he's not part of the people that are benefiting immensely from excessive free market.
He said he said so in that second base he take home when at the end of the month when he gets so many millions how does it feel with the driver driving him who would be a staff of the of the might likely be a staff of natural assembly and he knows how much has gone into into that one's pocket and politicians always play and it's it's worldwide again they always play to the gallery when they know what they have done can He justify for example his take home pay with that with that of of a civil servant of the same rank. What work is any senator doing that a professor is not is not doing 50 times over or a doctor?
The the thing about politicians is they always take care of quote and unquote their own those who will be useful.
Compare the salary and take home of a judge with that of the chief medical officer. Is it comparable?
But they need the judge.
By the time they need the doctor, they out.
>> He said he also said he doesn't worship money.
>> I don't know if he worships money. I don't know. That's between him. Like the Hebrews will say that's between him and his chi whether he worships money or not. But he spends it.
M >> I expect somebody of standing to have said one day that let's look at what we take home and let's look at a minimum price structure. He's a labor man.
He's a labor man. Did you not take money to buy a vehicle?
What are you talking about?
Let's put it on the not it nobody's going to put wool over our eyes. Like I said, we are we are we are very very concerned about people staying alive or dead. This thing was not even done by the South African government. It was by its citizens.
Okay. And fair enough. Their reaction was a bit slow eventually. But that is also because the that is also because our own reaction from the from the official N2 was slow.
Let's move on to our next story. Where's that be?
>> Let's Let's move on. Come on. Let's Let's be going.
>> Okay. This is what I want.
>> Okay. Uh straight to our next story.
Nigeria Airways pensioners beg Tobu for 36 billionaire.
>> This is the government that com belongs to. is a senator who who is so concerned. These Nigeria Airways staff have not been paid their pensions since uh let let me read it. Retirees of the for Nigeria Airways pleaded with the president to interview in the release of their outstanding 36 billion pension and severance ideas that many workers are dying and face abject. The pensioners un excuse me under the ages of the Nigerian Union of Pension Union of Pensioners made the appeal during a peaceful protest.
Speaking on behalf of the group Sheriff Olu said the former employees had remained in despair since the liquidation of Nigerian highways in 2004.
No senator has come to take up their case. In fact, look at the the the those who put their lives on the line, the the the military men. They still haven't gotten a pen a penny today.
And they have a laborbased senator in the national assembly who hasn't taken up their case.
So Nigerian they haven't been paid since 2004. 6,000 workers disengaged without complete severe benefits, severance benefits. 6,000. According to him, the president had approved the payment of the outstanding 36 billion in 2025. Now, I hope that this is inflation adjusted >> because I hope so. I hope because I hope you are not looking at the exact amount that it was in 2004 to come and pay today you know and the president had approved the payment jolu now >> in June 2025 now this this indictment is not of presidentu only is all successive governments including I think ambassador since 2004 for and and I said he he improved he approved the balance of 36 billion to finally resolve his issue. However, despite several protests and appeals, the Ministry of Finance was yet to authorize the payment. They have written letters concerning the risk on their standing severance. But no, some of the members are dead then in droves. Many are bedridden and helplessly waiting for their last breath. We appreciate the president for approving the payment and we passionately appeal to him to ensure the funds are released without further delay. Why do you think the funds haven't been released?
>> I wouldn't know.
>> It's the same with the customer.
>> I wouldn't maybe we don't have the money.
>> Yeah, it's the same with the with the contractors. Oh, >> these are the things that our senator needs to apply himself to instead of raising raising you know dust on duly and playing on sentiment. This is very very sad. That's the story of Nigeria.
Nigeria airway spion has they begged you know book for 36 million lifeline >> which they might not get this year.
>> Ah >> it's election year. It's election year.
I I doubt >> where in the history of this country where do you think money is spent during election?
>> It's among the political class now. Once the primaries are over, >> things will start flowing.
>> They still start flowing.
When you hear when you hear that a former minister is charged for so and so billion, it's not in all cases he took the money and took it to his village.
No. Usually they can't even find the money on them again. It's gone.
You know what? You can watch the show on Facebook and YouTube. In case you're listening on the radio, you can watch actually on Facebook and YouTube.
Nigeria Info9.3.
Search for that and you'll be able to watch us live. Uh drop your comments.
Let us know what you think um about the stories that we've um traded so far so we can we can move on from from there.
Uh let me take uh this one here from Jimmy. Jimmy says the military government of Mutella and Abasjo uh nationalized BP to AP in the 1970s.
Um I don't know where you're going with that. Um I don't know whether you >> No, the the issues are not the same. It was government to government issue. It was in the case of appetite this same South Africa.
>> Okay. And it was it was a it was a wellthoughtout push by Obasenjjo to force them to force the hand of that was in that was their different issues. This involves citizens you know that one was government to government and and we and we used it to help South Africa and it also contributed to the lifting of appetite.
So they are not related at all. You don't just seize assets like like that.
Um you know there are implications >> which foreign investor will come to your country if if the foreign investor thought for one second that that you could just which country would you go to if you think that they can just at the top of button seize your assets because some people are are are being unreasonable.
Remember it's not the government.
We should remember that.
>> Yeah.
>> And the issue of being Ramaposa being he said he was a major shareholder. I don't know about that one.
>> I don't know about that.
>> I don't know about that one.
>> Yeah.
Why are you put to I don't know if Raosa is the biggest biggest shareholder. So I can't say yes, I can't say no.
>> Let's go to let's go to our next story.
Um this is the punch. Page seven of the punch. FG orders varsities to suspend drug offenders.
>> They should suspend drug offenders in government too. Why vities alone? There are drug offenders in the polity.
That that's by simple reaction. If you want to start harassing our young ones, which is good, I like it. But it should start from it should start from the top.
If within government itself there are many people that are on steroids and all kinds of things for some of them is even visible from the way they behave in public.
So what are we saying here?
>> I don't know what you're saying.
>> Anyway, the federal government has directed universities across the country to temporarily suspend students who test positive for but that is a given.
>> Does the federal government need why do we waste time on things like this? So there there's there they they said something the other day about um secondary schools. Now it's it's university because in secondary schools they said they will now be testing secondary school students for drugs and all of that. And my immediate reaction at times I mean what's the state of our secondary schools? Do they have functioning chemistry lab? Do they have um functioning classrooms alone let alone you know chemistry labs? So yeah I I don't know how they come up with all of these things. No, look, you see a a lot of what the political class do is play to the gallery. We all know that the problem is from the top. What example have the older ones passed down to their children?
Do you think children are blind?
They listen to radio. They listen to the the social media. They see everything.
They know leaders who are accused of one drug thing or the other. They know.
So you cannot be setting a bad example on one hand and then want to point. It's the same thing that happens with Yahoo Yahoo.
>> You the adults. This is not to make an excuse for it. But let us let us be honest with ourselves and start from where the true pinch is the most. That is the example.
Quite a number of the political class are on drug. You don't need to be told.
You can you can easily see it and nothing sharif nothing is hidden.
See, if you want to know definitely what the president has on his breakfast table this morning within two hours you will know he had two boiled eggs and what you will know nothing under the sun is hidden nothing.
So if I I have you know I have a lot of sympathy for General Manuel because I'm a great fan of his and my good friend D.
We all into trying to fight the sort of drugs and so on. But for starters let's set the right example >> and we are not doing that.
>> We're not. We're not. Let's go to the metro pages of the punch. See >> okay so quickly. It's been a while we did this for you. Very quickly, let's go through this. Fake job offer led me to kidnappers den. Be careful out there.
This is a credit of Uni Jos and they countered his traumatic experience. More brazes suspected kidnappers out after doctor's rescue. I remember even fella talked about this. Okay, so a place has been used for as a kidnappers then. Why do you always have to raise it down?
>> It can be used for other things.
Government can take it can you be used for other things and renovated but like fell said okay government three family members in community residents lament as refuge hips ah where is as refuge hips little loss community and he says residents and business owners in the oti area of loss state have declared the growing heaps of refuge littering major roads and inner streets in the community. I hope um my good bro would see this one uh uh token and get that place cleared. We can't be waiting for every environmental Saturday before we clean up. Uh anyway, vigilantes foil attempted vandalism of oil power station. You know Nigeria they vandalize everything.
Do you know how many times they've changed the railings on a go bridge?
They they vandalized it up to the point even the reflectors on the third mill bridge. Beautiful job done by Omahi in spite of and remember Omari once said that oh we thank the president that he allowed us put CCTV.
Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Which other one here? A Nigerian convict flees UK after mistaken prison release. This thing is happening recurrently now in the UK. If they wanted to release somebody, they wanted to release a sheriff and release a instead flee the UK. So it's probably back here.
Police launch probe as oxal beaten to death.
You see that's in Nigeria. Yeah. the generary and beaten to death in an amra and Lagos state story Lagos unveils panel for building demolition and builds so wulu hails lassu's emergence as Nigeria's most preferred vity it cannot be unilag is the most preferred university it says governor fu has prayed lassu for emerging as the most university in Nigeria in the 2026 unified territory metriculation exam.
That's nice. I mean, that's is good to hear.
>> Okay, we have to go now.
>> We have to go.
>> Oh, yes.
>> I was just warming up.
>> Yeah, we have to go. We have to go.
>> Uh, yes. I >> spoiled sport.
>> I cheated this Nollywood actor's demise.
>> Yes. May you s rest in peace.
>> So, rest in peace.
>> Yes.
>> Well, he's back at 9:00. Um, Legos, thank you for being a part of this show.
But stay here. Don't go anywhere. We'll talk uh Adam >> for you. Every day is day one. Day one for you to give 100 100 on the tracks, on the road, at work. Cuz it's your job to give your all. 100 with the skiing and on the dance floor.
