The thyroid gland produces hormones through a multi-step process: TSH from the pituitary gland signals the thyroid to capture iodine from the blood, which is then attached to thyroglobulin by the TPO enzyme to form MIT (one iodine) and DIT (two iodines); two DIT molecules combine to create T4, while MIT and DIT combine to form T3, the active hormone that tissues convert from T4 to regulate metabolism, energy, and heat production.

How Your Thyroid Builds Hormones 🦋⚡ #educationalanimation #healthscience #educationalshortsAdded:
Hey, everything starts up here. This signal is called TSH, but TSH is not a thyroid hormone. It's actually a command from the pituitary gland. It tells the thyroid gland to start making T4 and T3.
The thyroid gland is about to wake up.
When TSH arrives, it activates the whole system. Production lines start turning on. The thyroid starts capturing iodine from the blood. Now, the thyroid can begin building hormones. This is iodine, the main building material for thyroid hormones. Without iodine, T4 and T3 cannot exist. So, the thyroid captures iodine from the blood, and soon it becomes part of T4 and T3.
Now, another important helper appears.
This enzyme is called TPO. TPO helps attach iodine to thyroglobulin. One iodine creates MITs, and two iodines create DIT.
Now, the thyroid starts building real hormones. When two DIT pieces combine, they create T4. And when MIT joins DIT, the thyroid creates T3, the active hormone. Sometimes, the immune system joins the process, too.
These are antibodies. Some antibodies recognize TPO, and others recognize thyroglobulin. Normally, antibodies help protect the body, but sometimes the immune system can mistakenly recognize parts of the thyroid as unfamiliar. The thyroid releases lots of T4 into the body, but tissues can transform T4 into active T3. And that's where the real cellular work begins. T3 helps control energy, heat, and metabolism.
The thyroid isn't just one hormone, it's an entire system.
