[00:33:48]She never strayed. She mourned him to the end of her own life. And she also shared the deepest pleasure of her existence with Porche, talked to him more freely than to almost any other living soul, trusted his judgment above all others on the things she cared most about in the world, and kept him at her side for half a century. Human beings contain more than one room. The error the gossip columnists committed again and again and again was assuming that if she loved Porche at all, then it had to be the kind of love that requires a locked bedroom door. It was the other kind, the rarer kind in truth, the kind that lasts 50 years and quietly asks for nothing in return. His life outside the palace kept rolling along beside the royal one, and it was a substantial life in its own right, not merely a shadow cast by hers. He sat on Hampshire County Council for 24 years and shared the whole thing for four of them. He was elected to the jockey club, the governing body of his entire sport in 1964 and ran its race planning committee for 18 years, which meant he helped administer and restructure British racing as a whole, not just the Queen's private corner of it. He was made president of Newbury Racecourse. He bred top class horses under his own colors away from the royal operation phillies like lyric fantasy and lemon sule and niche the last of whom was ridden to her victories by a 57year-old leester pigot which is its own small piece of glory.

[00:35:21]In 1982 the queen made him a knight commander of the royal Victorian order which is the honor that lies entirely in the monarch's personal gift. the one she hands to people who have served her personally rather than the state. Of course, she gave him that particular one. In 1987, his father finally died.

[00:35:39]And after 63 years, the borrowed courtesy title became the real and inherited one. Porche was at long last the seventh Earl of Carnivon, and almost nobody on earth could make the switch in their heads. She had been calling him Porche since they were both teenagers in a stable yard. And Porche he remained to her and to most of the world until the very end. A man can inherit one of the great Earlddoms of England and still answer instantly to the nickname a 13-year-old girl gave him before the war. His daughter Carolyn married a man named John Warren, a former stable boy who had worked his way up at the highlear stud from the bottom. And that marriage matters more than it looks because Warren learned the trade at the master's own elbow and would one day inherit the master's job. The bloodline of the friendship, you could say, was being bred carefully forward, exactly the way the horses themselves were. And through that family, the connections kept on multiplying in every direction.

[00:36:41]One of Portug's own grandsons became a godson of Diana, Princess of Wales. The queen herself was godmother to his eldest son, the boy who would grow up to be the eighth earl. These were not simply two families who happened to get along. They were woven into one another generation over generation, christening over christening, the way the great old aristocratic houses had always woven themselves into the fabric of the crown by stud books and godparents and standing two seats apart in the royal box at Ascot every June for 50 consecutive years. And then comes the last day, and it is a strange and genuinely terrible one because the most loyal man in the queen's entire life happened to die on the single worst morning of the new century. On the 11th of September 2001, the 7th Earl of Carvon was at home in England. He was 77 years old, and his health had been failing for some time. That afternoon, like hundreds of millions of other human beings across the planet, he sat in front of a television and watched the coverage pouring out of New York and Washington. The towers, the smoke, the impossible footage looping over and over. And at some point during that day, his failing heart finally gave out. He died of a heart attack on the 11th of September, 2001, the same day that nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks and ocean away to the west. His second son happened to be in the United States at that very moment at the Kentucky bloodstock sales doing the family's work and he was stranded there for days afterward when American airspace slammed shut unable to fly home to his own father's death. The funeral was held at the small church at High Clear in the shadow of the great house on the 20th of September with the airliner still grounded across the Atlantic and the whole world still holding its breath. The queen does not by very long custom attend the funerals of her subjects. She made exceptions for only a tiny handful of people across her entire 70-year reign. The surviving accounts of whether she was physically present at High Clear that particular day are mixed. The kind of mixed that royal recordkeeping always seems to leave behind on purpose so that the public can never quite be certain. But there is one thing she said in those same weeks that the people who understood the relationship have always read as a quiet coded elegy for the friend she had just lost. At a memorial service for the victims of the September 11th attacks, the famously buttoned up, emotionally armored monarch, the woman who had spent 75 years rigorously not showing the public what she felt about anything said one short sentence that broke straight through the armor. Grief, she said, is the price we pay for love.

[00:39:30]The line was on its face and in its setting about the thousands of dead, the firefighters, the families, the unbearable scale of the thing. Of course, it was. But she said it in the very same week that she buried Porche.

[00:39:45]And the people standing closest to the truth of the story have always quietly suspected that the sentence carried a second meaning folded carefully inside the public one. A private grief tucked inside the shared one. Grief is the price we pay for love. She had loved him openly and honorably for 60 years in exactly the way she was permitted to love him, and not one inch further. And now the bill for all of it had finally arrived. His son-in-law, John Warren, the former stable boy, became the Queen's next racing manager and held the role until her own death in 2022 when the racing color she had carried for 70 years finally came off the turf for the last time. So the friendship in a sense outlived the friend. It ran on through his daughter's husband, kept the same family at the center of the same passion, and only truly ended on the day she herself died, and the horses stopped being hers. There is something deeply fitting in that, something that would have made Porche smile. The bond had always been partly about the horses, and the horses kept on running, and a Herbert by marriage kept on managing them right up until the morning the woman at the heart of all of it was finally gone, too. So what in the end do we make of him? This man with the borrowed title and the unbuckled friendship and the one open door in the wall around the most guarded house on earth. The tabloids handed you two porches and both of them are completely useless. The first is the secret lover.

[00:41:16]The dashing pier who supposedly fathered a prince and carried on a 50-year affair right under the nose of a jealous husband, a figure who lives almost entirely in the resemblance hunting of gossip columnists and the dramatic license of a streaming drama. But the forensic timeline kills the paternity stone dead. The man's own genuine fury kills the affair. There is no document, no letter, no witness, no pregnancy that does not plainly belong to her husband.

[00:41:45]Nothing at all but the wishful arithmetic of people who find the idea of a chasteed lifelong friendship between a man and a woman so flatly impossible to believe that they would frankly rather invent a royal scandal than accept the existence of that much ordinary human loyalty. The second Porche is the opposite cartoon, the dull functionary, the racing manager, a name in small type in the index of somebody else's biography, half recognized from the end credits of a grander person's life. And that one is just as wrong because it mistakes discretion for insignificance, which is a mistake the man himself spent a lifetime quietly inviting people to make. The real man is far more interesting than either cardboard cutout. He was the road the queen did not take the easy, sensible, suitable English marriage she looked at, square in the face at the age of 21 and turned down in order to chase the difficult foreign prince she actually wanted. And then having been turned down, he did the thing that almost no rejected man in history manages to do with any grace. He stayed. He did not curdle into bitterness. He did not slope off to sell his story to a newspaper or a publisher when the money would have been enormous. He married well and happily. He raised his children. He ran his county and his sport at the highest level. And he made himself so genuinely useful and so completely unshakably trustworthy that the one woman who had not married him kept him at her side for the entire remainder of both their lives in the single corner of her gilded existence where she was ever truly free.

And each of them in his own way spent the length of a lifetime quietly aware of the fact he was, when you finally stand back from it all, the most powerful kind of man in any royal story, which is precisely the kind the official histories almost always overlook entirely. Not the one with the crown or the army or the great office of state, the one with the trust. He held the most jealously guarded thing the Queen of England had to give to anyone, which was her unguarded, unperformed private self, and he held it gently in both hands for 60 years, and he never once, not for a single moment, dropped it. That is not a footnote in somebody else's life. That is the whole game.
