[00:00:15]Thank you for being here. It's Memorial Day, so we're going to do one on uh Eddie Albert, who starred in Green Acres, and uh he was a true war hero. I mean, a true war hero. save 47 Marines lives. 47. It's an incredible story.

[00:00:35]Hollywood has produced countless actors who portrayed war heroes on television and in movies, but only a few select truly lived that reality in their own lives. One of those men was Eddie Albert. While most audiences remember him today as Oliver Wendel Douglas from the sitcom Green Acres, Albert's real life wartime service revealed a level of courage far beyond anything written in a script. Long before America officially entered World War II, Eddie Albert was already quietly helping his country. By the 1930s, he had become an established entertainer, appearing in Broadway productions such as Brother Rat, Room Service, and The Boys in Syracuse. In 1938, he made his film debut in the movie version of Brother Rat. But while building his acting career, Albert also found himself witnessing suspicious activity connected to growing international tensions. In 1939, while sailing near Baja, California, Albert reportedly heard rumors that Japanese operatives posing as fishermen were conducting hyperraphic surveys in the area. He passed the information along to the United States Army intelligence.

[00:01:38]That same year, while touring Mexico with the Escalante Brothers Circus, Albert also photographed German Ubot's activity off the Mexican coastline.

[00:01:47]Eddie Albert officially entered the military service in September 42 when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. A year later, he left the Coast Guard after being commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade in the United States Navy. was during the battle of to Tarowa in November 1943 that Albert carried out the heroic actions that would define his wartime legacy. The coral reefs surrounding Tarowa uh prevented marine landing craft from reaching the beach directly uh forcing many Marines to climb out into the water hundreds of yards uh from shore. And as they struggled toward land, they came under devastating Japanese gunfire. And within minutes, large numbers of Marines have been killed or wounded. Albert had originally been assigned to retrieve equipment from the area, but after witnessing the chaos unfolding around him, he took action. Risking his own life, he commandeered a rescue boat and managed to save 47 Marines trapped in the deadly crossfire. He also supervised the rescue of approximately 30 additional Marines during the operation.

[00:02:50]For his extraordinary bravery, Eddie Albert received the Bronze Star with a combat Ve. In later years, Albert rarely focused attention on his own heroics.

[00:02:59]Instead, he preferred speaking about the bravery and sacrifices made by the Marines and servicemen who fought alongside him. Although television fans may best remember him for making audiences laugh on Green Acres, Eddie Albert's real life story proved he was also a genuine American hero.
