[00:00:15]Today, we travel back to October of 1740, to the city of Philadelphia, to hear from George Whitfield on his second tour of the American colonies.

[00:00:27]George Whitfield was born in 1714 in Gloucester, England.

[00:00:32]But, the second half of his life belonged to America.

[00:00:36]He crossed the Atlantic seven times in an era when crossings took six to eight weeks each.

[00:00:43]He preached, by his own count, more than 18,000 sermons.

[00:00:48]In October of 1740, on his second American tour, he preached at the church of a quiet Massachusetts pastor named Jonathan Edwards.

[00:00:59]Edwards, who had heard everything, who could not be impressed easily, Edwards wept openly during the sermon. He could not help it.

[00:01:09]This is what Whitfield came to say.

[00:01:12]The sermon is The Method of Grace.

[00:01:15]Whitfield's text is from Jeremiah, chapter 6.

[00:01:19]They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, "Peace, peace, when there is no peace."

[00:01:27]The claim of this sermon is that most peace people feel with God is not peace.

[00:01:33]It is denial wearing the costume of peace.

[00:01:36]And there is an order, a method by which real peace actually comes. The order matters.

[00:01:44]Whitfield is about to show you what it is.

[00:01:47]Oh, a not-so-fun fact. We told you the main one in a previous episode. The asthma after preaching in cold rain.

[00:01:58]The night before he died, a crowd gathered outside his lodgings in Exeter, Massachusetts.

[00:02:04]He was already ill.

[00:02:06]He came to the staircase with a candle and preached to them from there until the candle burned down.

[00:02:13]He went to bed.

[00:02:14]He was dead by morning.

[00:02:17]So, let's have a listen to an abridged version of The Method of Grace for ourselves.

[00:02:25]Most of you have a peace you should not have.

[00:02:29]You are at rest with God in your mind, and you should not be.

[00:02:33]You have not earned it. You have not asked for it on his terms. You have arrived at it by avoiding the question.

[00:02:40]And you have called this peace. It is not.

[00:02:44]Hear the text. Jeremiah chapter 6 verse 14.

[00:02:49]The prophet, looking at the people of his day, said this.

[00:02:53]They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, "Peace, peace, when there is no peace."

[00:03:02]Healed slightly. That is the diagnosis.

[00:03:06]The wound was deep. The treatment was a bandage. The patient was sent home and told he was fine.

[00:03:13]You think this is about ancient Israel.

[00:03:16]It is not only about ancient Israel. The false peace problem is not a chapter of history. It is a chapter of every age, including our own.

[00:03:26]The wound now is the same wound. The slight treatment is the same slight treatment. The bandage is the same bandage. Only the language has changed.

[00:03:37]Now, I will show you what false peace looks like, so you can examine your own.

[00:03:43]The first mark of false peace is that it has never been disturbed.

[00:03:47]You have not, in your own life, sat with the weight of what you are without God.

[00:03:53]You may have heard sermons about sin.

[00:03:56]You may have agreed with them in your mind, but you have never, in a quiet room with no one watching, looked at yourself and felt the weight.

[00:04:06]The second mark of false peace is that it comes easily.

[00:04:11]Real peace comes after a long walk through a hard country.

[00:04:16]False peace arrives unprompted.

[00:04:19]You inherited it from your family. You absorbed it in your church. You constructed it from the things you were told.

[00:04:27]The third mark of false peace is that it does not survive a hard question.

[00:04:33]Ask yourself now, "If I died tonight, would I stand before God on my righteousness or on his?"

[00:04:42]Your real peace, or your false one, will answer that question without your help.

[00:04:47]Now hear the order.

[00:04:50]Real peace with God comes only by an order.

[00:04:53]The order is not negotiable.

[00:04:56]Anyone who has skipped it does not have what he thinks he has.

[00:05:01]First, real conviction of sin.

[00:05:04]Not the intellectual acknowledgement that you are imperfect. Not the polite agreement that everyone falls short.

[00:05:11]A real, weight-bearing conviction in your own chest that what you are has rightly earned what God's holiness must do.

[00:05:21]Second, poverty of spirit.

[00:05:24]The recognition that you have nothing to bring.

[00:05:27]No good record. No earned standing. No partial credit.

[00:05:33]The hands you would lift to God are empty.

[00:05:36]They have always been empty. You only now see them.

[00:05:42]Third, hunger.

[00:05:44]Not for relief. Not for the absence of guilt, for Christ.

[00:05:49]The desperate wanting of the only person in the universe who can cover what you are.

[00:05:56]Fourth, closing with Christ.

[00:05:59]Coming to him on his terms with your nothing and receiving from him his everything.

[00:06:06]His righteousness for yours.

[00:06:08]His standing for yours. His peace for yours. Skip a step and you do not have it.

[00:06:15]Try a different order and you do not have it.

[00:06:19]There is one way. Hear me.

[00:06:21]This order is hard.

[00:06:23]The first step alone has put grown men on the floor of churches weeping.

[00:06:28]The poverty step is the death of the self you have spent your life building.

[00:06:34]The hunger step is a place no one would choose to enter on his own.

[00:06:38]Only someone going somewhere goes through it.

[00:06:42]But on the other side is what you actually came here for.

[00:06:46]Even if you did not know it.

[00:06:48]Peace with God.

[00:06:50]Real peace.

[00:06:51]Not the bandage Jeremiah was talking about.

[00:06:55]Now hear what the real peace is.

[00:06:58]It is not the absence of trouble.

[00:07:00]It is not the feeling that everything is going well.

[00:07:03]It is not the relief of having finally gotten yourself together.

[00:07:08]It is the felt knowledge that Christ's righteousness now covers yours.

[00:07:13]That you are accepted. Not because of what you are, but because of who he is and what he did.

[00:07:20]That the verdict against you has been born in your place by him.

[00:07:26]And that you may live with that knowledge in any storm.

[00:07:31]The peace is not the storm being gone.

[00:07:34]The peace is that the storm cannot get to where you really are.

[00:07:38]Because where you really are is in him.

[00:07:43]Therefore, examine your peace.

[00:07:46]If it has not passed through the order, it is not the peace I have been preaching.

[00:07:51]It is the bandage of Jeremiah on the wound of a soul that has not been treated.

[00:07:57]Today, while you still can, come to him on his terms.

[00:08:02]Receive from him what you cannot earn.

[00:08:05]He gives it to anyone who comes.

[00:08:08]Come.

[00:08:11]That was the sermon.

[00:08:13]Almost 300 years ago, in a Philadelphia church on a fall morning in 1740, that is what he came to say.

[00:08:22]Whitfield wanted you to feel one thing, the order.

[00:08:27]He wanted you to look at the peace you have with God and ask whether it passed through the order.

[00:08:33]Real conviction of sin, poverty of spirit, hunger for Christ, closing with him on his terms.

[00:08:42]He wanted you to ask whether your peace is the peace of the order or the peace of skipping the order.

[00:08:49]It is supposed to land like that.

[00:08:52]If you have ever, in a quiet moment, looked at the peace you have and wondered whether it is actually peace, you have felt this.

[00:09:02]The wondering itself is sometimes the first crack in the false peace, the first signal that the order is beginning in you, even now.

[00:09:13]Whitfield is asking you not to suppress that crack.

[00:09:17]Let it open.

[00:09:19]The peace on the other side, if you let the order finish, is the only one worth keeping. George Whitfield has been dead for more than 250 years.
