A rainy day for tourists in Qaqortoq Greenland!

[00:00:00]rain. It picked a fine day to rain. I am working in the rain.

[00:00:05]We have a big cruise ship out here in the harbor.

[00:00:08]Let me see if I can zoom it in a little bit, maybe.

[00:00:14]Anyway, I don't know the size of the passenger list on here, but it started raining sometime in the night.

[00:00:22]We've been in the middle of a nasty little drought.

[00:00:25]So, I thought I would share with you a little bit of what I'm doing. I'm standing up here and I'm helping to direct tourists and talk about the different aspects of the Stone and Man. So, over here I have um the first one. So, Aage Hog, she started a art uh program in 1992 that lasted a year.

[00:00:49]And she had up to 18 artists come in from different countries and I will list them in the description box later, but this one is called They Come.

[00:00:59]And this is about the relationship between the Inuits and the whales. This is a very symbiotic relationship. And they don't believe in exploiting them. They do eat them, but they do not exploit them.

[00:01:15]This is a narwhal.

[00:01:17]Hi.

[00:01:19]So, anyway, they are called They Come and she put them here so that they they were facing the fjord because back in the her younger days, it wouldn't be unheard of to see this many whales there. So, this is called They Come.

[00:01:35]And then I'm going to come down here to the wall that shows the Inuit faces.

[00:01:39]They This is called Insight.

[00:01:42]And this wall is about the past, the present, and the future.

[00:01:48]And what it means to the Inuit culture that they continue their relationship with nature and this country to protect it, to live on it, and to respect it.

[00:02:04]So, I thought I would share a little bit of this before I get back to work. I'm waiting on tourists to come up here so I can start talking to them.

[00:02:12]It is raining pretty good.

[00:02:14]But, I thought I would share a little bit with you. And good morning to all you who just came in. I'm going to take a quick walk down here uh so you can see a couple more pieces.

[00:02:26]Just bear with me a minute cuz uh I'll be walking back and forth on this walk.

[00:02:31]Cuz this is where I'm stationed today.

[00:02:34]You can see there's pretty flowers, little tiny flowers. Those are really tiny.

[00:02:42]Okay, this one here is called Strong Encounter.

[00:02:47]And the first the first time I saw this, I told my husband that it looks like a Dodge Ram emblem from a Dodge Ram truck, which is funny. But, it's called Strong Encounter. And it was created in homage for all the sheep farmers down here in South Greenland. We have 35 sheep farmers down here.

[00:03:07]And uh they're spread out. And the only way to get to them is by boat.

[00:03:13]And then up here, there's more stone and man up here. This one right here with the There's a seat in between this one. It reminds me of the Flintstones uh rock car.

[00:03:26]You know, the axle with rock wheels.

[00:03:30]This is fireweed, but it doesn't burn you, just so you know.

[00:03:34]It's just what it's called, I think because of how vibrant the color is.

[00:03:39]This piece up here is called Eyes.

[00:03:41]It talks about how eyes can see around.

[00:03:44]And then the far one there is called Stone Animal, and that one is also by Aka. So, like I said, 18 artists created 25 pieces in the town.

[00:03:57]And um they took a year away from their families to do this so that that we could have an open-air museum here. We now have 45 of them.

[00:04:09]Um and I am going to do a video when I locate all 45 of them and I'll talk about each piece that I do have knowledge of and share with you what they are about, why they were created the way they were, and everything else. So, anyway, I just thought I would share this with you guys. I hope everybody will have a great day today.

[00:05:12]And this is the main harbor here. And over here where you see that mural, uh that's Mother of the Sea.

[00:05:18]Uh and if they did a art contest and two artists won the contest and this was one of them.

[00:05:26]The other one I can't show you cuz it's on the side of Great Greenland.

[00:05:30]Uh and I would have to go there. Um there is some icebergs out here.

[00:05:35]Uh what else was I going to say about out here?

[00:05:38]Um but this is the main hub in and out with ships. This is where the container ship comes, cruise ships come, and you can see they're not anchored at court.

[00:05:49]And yep, taxi drivers will get feisty about people standing in the road.

[00:05:54]It's interesting how people forget to stay out of the middle of the road.

[00:06:05]But we've been in a drought and I don't mean just a drought of rain, we've been in a drought of uh snow.

[00:06:11]We've not hardly had any snow the last 4 years. I mean, not enough to make up for not getting rain during the summer months. And this has been the first rainfall we've had since summer started.

[00:06:23]Um so, it looks like it's going to hang around all day, I think.

[00:06:28]Uh so, I'll probably be soaking wet by the time I get home.

[00:06:31]Tourists standing in the road or locals are bit of Nope, tourists, only tourists.

[00:06:36]Locals don't stand in the middle of the road because they know because they know they're going to get the horn blown at them.

[00:06:45]Only tourists stand in the middle of the road. You see, they're still standing in the road.

[00:06:55]It's a problem here and I don't know if um the government will ever put signs up that says don't stand in the road.

[00:08:37]Um you know, I lived in Florida all of my life and whenever you would go down a country road, a deer would pop out in front and just stand there looking at you like it didn't know what to do because it saw an incoming car. That's how deer get hit.

[00:08:51]And a lot of tourists act the same way, which is interesting.

[00:09:00]So anyways, and down there by that van, I don't know if you can see my husband or not.

[00:09:05]He's got a number 10 sign he's holding up.

[00:09:08]He is doing uh coffee mix today and they're going to use the bus instead of walking to get the tourists up to the top of the mountain cuz they're going way up there uh to do coffee mix. And for those of you who don't know what a coffee mix is, it's a gathering of people who come and sit around a table and have sweet treats and coffee or tea or water and uh host of the house, she tells stories about Greenland to the tourists and um Nickolaj helps to translate because he speaks three languages. Uh because um some hosts don't speak but Greenlandic, so you always need a translator to help with that.

[00:09:47]And so they have several young people including my husband who happens to speak three languages.

[00:09:56]There isn't any sidewalks.

[00:10:07]We walk on the side of the road basically.

[00:10:20]A small act of kindness, you remember?

[00:10:22]Oh, why did that come up? That's weird.

[00:10:29]I thought it was somebody's comment, sorry.

[00:10:35]I like that you interact. A lot of YouTubers don't. It can be very impersonal. Yes, I will always interact because that's one of my biggest pet peeves is to watch a channel, ask a question, and it gets ignored. Or if I post after the fact a question and it gets ignored. It frustrates me to no end. So, I truly think that it's better to you know, engage because I want y'all to come back and watch me, and if I don't engage with you, why should you come back?

[00:11:07]And that's why I do it.

[00:11:09]And and it's not just about that, and it's also because you guys know I like to talk too much, you know.

[00:11:14]Let's put that one out there.

[00:11:15]>> [laughter] >> I love answering questions, and I ask a ton of them, and anyone who has known me my entire life knows that I'm a person of questions. I'm always asking questions. I just cannot help myself.

[00:11:29]And I think I do it because I want to learn something and the only way to learn about something is to actually ask the question. There's no such thing as a stupid question. It becomes stupid when you don't ask them.

[00:11:48]But yeah, that's a big pet peeve with me.

[00:11:50]Uh some channels I stopped going to because you know, I never get engaged with.

[00:11:57]And you know, some of them I've been watching for years.

[00:12:02]The wind feels like it's trying to pick up.

[00:12:05]Never hurts to ask a question. I taught my now very adult kids that yes.

[00:12:12]If you don't ask questions, how are you ever going to get answers to what you're want wanting to know about? You won't.

[00:12:19]And kids and kids are the especially should never be ignored about their questions.

[00:12:26]My parents always told us to be seen and not heard. So, a lot of times, you know, if I had did have a question, I wasn't allowed to ask, you know?

[00:12:37]So, promote promote that if you can. If you have children, promote asking questions cuz this is how you learn.

[00:12:44]Y'all got any questions so far? It's cold out here, by the way. I should have brought gloves. It's gusts of winds blowing with this rain.

[00:12:55]And we got people milling around. I think that's a worker right there. I think he works somewhere.

[00:13:01]We got a lot of stuff going on in our town.

[00:13:03]I think our town is about to have an explosion of different things due to the airport.

[00:13:12]What temperature is it there now? Uh that's a good question. I think it's around 10° C, which is probably mid 40s, maybe.

[00:13:25]Only it doesn't feel like the 40s to me.

[00:13:27]It I don't know how to explain this, but if I was in North Florida and it was 40°, I'd be freezing my butt off. But here, it don't feel that cold, but right now the rain and the wind is making it feel cold.

[00:13:38]Yeah.

[00:13:41]But yesterday, with all the sun, the last several days actually, we had almost 60° temperatures, 60° Fahrenheit.

[00:13:50]So, it's just cuz it's raining and there's lots of cloud cover and uh wind it The wind feels like it's coming from the north.

[00:13:57]Uh so, that's why it feels chilly.

[00:13:59]I'm in Australia. We do Celsius. Okay, so almost 60° would be around uh I think 18 or 19° C.

[00:14:13]Somewhere right around there.

[00:14:14]I have to guess. I can't look it up because I'm on my phone talking to you guys.

[00:14:23]That's our local uh museum.

[00:14:26]Um this is where um Charles Lindbergh and Rasmussen were best friends and they spent a lot of time in this building before it became a museum. It used to be a like a um small mini tiny uh I don't know hostel or something and uh the two top floors were sleeping quarters and on the bottom floor it had a living area, a kitchen, and on the back side of it it had uh a little store. And uh Charles Lindbergh and Rasmussen would come through here all the time and there was a young lady that lived in this town and I call her um Arnaq for short because I can't pronounce her long name. She was the first Greenlander Inuit to take them on tours across the ice cuz she could teach them how to survive the the conditions that, you know, was here back then. And they traveled over 16,000 km together between the three of them.

[00:15:25]So, uh this was built in 1804.

[00:15:28]It was built by uh or it was uh Danish-Norwegian architect created the building. Then they built it in Denmark to make sure everything went together the way it needed to, and then they pulled it apart, put it on a ship, and shipped it here. It is built out of um creosote um uh It looked to me it looks like railroad ties.

[00:15:50]But it's creosote uh creosote or soaked in creosote to make it waterproof.

[00:15:55]And uh so, yeah, that's one of our oldest buildings here.

[00:16:06]And so far no tourists have come up here yet.

[00:16:30]And this shop right This right here is our uh tourist shop along with souvenir shop. And on the top floor here is where we uh meet our boss and have meetings and things like that.

[00:16:43]Um the woman you see running across the road here coming in, she is one of our uh Greenlandic singers. She still sings.

[00:16:51]She's married to my boss's one of my bosses Wait. She's married to my boss's son, one of them.

[00:16:58]And um she's made records and things like that. So, she still sings, which I think is very cool.

[00:17:06]Oh, we must be taking more going to coffee makers.

[00:17:12]These are probably going to the one that's not very far from here cuz the one Nikolai's going on his way up top of the mountain.

[00:17:19]Uh he's still standing outside, too.

[00:17:25]What are the tourists just they're waiting to be taken somewhere.

[00:17:31]Uh all of these standing out here are going to Coffee Mix.
