Fox cubs emerge from their dens around 3-4 PM, initially appearing as blind, deaf, toothless creatures with fluffy charcoal grey or dark brown fur; they are attracted to food like meaty dog biscuits, and the vixen (female fox) will investigate the area before allowing the cubs to come out, requiring photographers to remain quiet and still to avoid disturbing the mother.

I spent an evening with wild fox cubs
Added:Welcome back everyone and welcome to this week's video.
So today I am in Scotland photographing some foxes.
So I've come up into this field here and I've been told that there are some fox cubs up here. So, I've got myself set up. Some uh chewy, meaty dog biscuits have been put out to entice the foxes, especially the fox cubs um out this afternoon. If they get sent of that, then they will come out and hopefully eat the biscuits and maybe spend a little bit of time uh playing, but who knows what they're going to do. Um, one of the things you got to be really careful of is the vixen because she will come out and check the area out before the cubs come out. So, if the vixen doesn't feel comfortable or sees me, then the cubs will not come out. So, I have to remain here very quiet, very still, and hopefully the vac will make a pass and the cubs will come out. So, all I got to do is just sit and wait.
It's a beautiful sunny afternoon. Um, it's about 2:30 at the moment and the fox club is usually all the foxes make an appearance around half 3 4:00 in the afternoon. So, I do have a bit of time to wait, but it just makes sure that I can get here, get settled, be quiet, and just wait for the foxes to come out without any disturbance.
Well, that was just incredible. We've had three cubs come out. Uh we're out for about 15 minutes, had a little walk around, ate some biscuits, and we have now gone back into the woods. I am on a bit of a slope here in front of me. I do have a hill. Sort of goes up and into the trees. Um so it's proven a little difficult to to sort of get level with them or get any decent pictures, but and it's really harsh light. Um I'm in the shade with this tree, but where I'm photographing the foxes, um it is bright sunshine. So, I think as the afternoon as the sun goes around this afternoon, these trees are going to shade this area and I'll get a lot a lot less contrast. Um, but they have made an appearance and absolutely wonderful. Three cubs. I didn't see the vixen. Um, she must have made a pass somewhere in the grass or in the bushes.
Um, but the cub came out and yeah, got some wonderful photos and hopefully of one as well licking its lips. Um, but what I'm going to do is I'm hoping that they're going to come out for a second session and we'll just see how it goes.
So, it's been about an hour and a half since the last cup made an appearance.
Um, not heard or seen anything yet. So, I'm going to continue to wait. Um, I have moved slightly because of the way the sun's moved around. Um, and it is now starting to shade this area up really, really nicely. So, if the fox do come out again, they're not going to be in the sun.
So, maybe half an hour, an hour, we'll have to wait and see.
Okay guys, absolutely fantastic.
So, the foxes have been out again. Um, the vixen did make a pass right at the back in the uh in the trees. Um, just got her on camera, but it was out of focus, but I'll show you the picture anyway. Um, yeah, great. She made a pass and then just one more of the cubs came out. um spent about 15 minutes just sort of scurrying around picking up scraps of biscuit or whatever it was eating. Um going back and forth, back and forth. So absolutely wonderful to see. Um but he's gone off now. There was a I don't know what it was. There was a noise or something in over in the back. Um and the cub just just went and disappeared and I haven't seen it now for another 20 minutes. Uh yeah.
So, I'm going to call it a day. I'm not bothered now if the foxes can hear me.
Um, the light's going to degrade from here. But what a fantastic day. What a fantastic experience. Been wanting to photograph uh some fox cubs for a long, long time. And uh where's the catcher? They're everywhere.
Um yeah, and I've I've succeeded in what I set out to do. So, I hope you enjoyed the photos. I hope you enjoyed the video clips of the fox cubs. Um, next video coming up will be be uh Bmpton Cliffs.
I'm off to Bmpton Cliffs for 3 days. Uh, got a workshop. I think I mentioned that in the last video uh to run with a young boy called Douggee. He's only 8 years old, but a great wildlife enthusiast and is really looking forward to spending the day with me at Bmpton Cliff. So, from me, from the field, from the foxes, I'll catch you all in the next one, guys. But thanks for watching. Bye for now.
