It spreads through the bite of infected ticks. Once an infected tick bites a lion, the Babesia parasite enters the bloodstream and attacks the red blood cells. Inside these cells, the parasite multiplies rapidly, eventually bursting the red blood cells. This destroys the body's ability to carry oxygen efficiently. Lions suffer from symptoms such as fever, weakness, loss of appetite, dehydration, and severe anemia. In serious cases, infection becomes fatal. Young lion cubs are particularly vulnerable. Their immune systems are still developing, making it harder for them to fight the infection.
