This video perfectly illustrates that sustainable fishing is an active science of balancing predator-prey dynamics rather than just a harvest. It’s a masterclass in how deep environmental literacy can turn a simple catch into a meaningful act of ecosystem management.

Successfully Catching Big Mackerel & Crab On A Picturesque DayAdded:
We're just getting ready to go out. We um going to take a couple more pots out, but in a few weeks I'll bring in the other pots which are for the spider crab. And we're going to reduce pots this year cuz yesterday we had so many octopus again. And we just don't want that many octopus. It's as simple as that. It's too many.
Plus, once the spiders are gone, I don't think there'll be much else apart from octopus.
Now, a couple of days ago, we had a problem with the engine on the back of that. It um I just couldn't start it. It was It conked out a couple of times on the way in. So, I thought I changed the plugs. Changed the plugs and I couldn't get it started. And I think it's uh from what I could see, it's a fuel issue.
There might have been tiny bit of dirt in the fuel. And I looked in the tank, only tiny tiny little bits, but it didn't seem right. So, um I'm going to take it apart, take the jets apart, clean all that, put it back together. And that one is a brand new one. So, I decided, well, I've been thinking about getting a new one for a while now, cuz the other one's getting on a bit. Even though the other one has never missed a heartbeat, it's been absolutely brilliant.
So, I went and bought exactly the same one.
Now, that one came from Sun Sport Marine, so at a reasonable price. And they've got more. So, if you want one, you know where to go. The price was good. The engine's good. I mean, I've been using an engine like that for years, and it's just that that Yamaha is absolutely brilliant. So, I'm going to So, what I'll do is I'll take the other engine.
And like I say, I'll clean it all up and the rest. And then I might sell it. I might just keep it cuz it's identical to that one. So, could be useful in the future if I need spare parts. Or I might put the good one back in the shed and just put the old one back on and use that till it Well, I don't know how long it will last. It's been going for years, so it's like I say, they're so good. But um I'm pretty sure it's a simple fix anyway. So anyway, let's uh let's get going.
Oh, and if I didn't mention, we're going to go and fish. We're going to do the pots as well, some of the pots, and fishing.
Yeah, it's funny. The wind was forecast to be light wind today, which it is, but before I left, I looked at the live data and it was giving force four, 16 mph winds. Well, say force four and it's not definitely not 16 mph.
Funny that. And that's the live data. I wonder where the live data is coming from, but it's not coming from around here.
Either that or their computers on the fritz.
It's all dry.
All right. Going to lift these couple of sets. We didn't do them yesterday, so we'll check them today and we're going to move them as well. They're they're only in here to soap. They should have soaked now been here any longer.
Somewhere else find somewhere else.
You don't need to find your pot down and they fill up.
>> Yeah, they find us.
>> Yeah.
No matter where you put your pots around here, out there, over there, down that way, up that way, they fill up with octopus.
Great. There's a market for it.
>> A bigger market. And there's a market for it, but not a very big market. We need a big market.
>> I don't understand why it's going so much. And there's so much of it out here.
That's not it.
Hello.
We don't want this opening. Still right.
Got a lobster, but we've also got a bloody great octopus in there that was probably trying to go for him. Did he get him? I don't know. We might have got him in time.
Big male.
See lobster octopus. And you know what he was trying to do, don't you?
Like I said, I hope he hasn't bitten him cuz they injected toxin.
This is a door p. I thought this part's got a door on it, but as you see, I get such a habit of going to the net.
>> See if I can beat that.
>> Nice.
>> No, no, no.
I've got three things.
>> Have you looked the right bucket?
>> I've got three.
>> That's not numbers. It's quality.
>> Oh, >> I've got technically I've got the most valuable catch.
>> Technically, if you could get rid of Well, I've got I've got numbers.
>> Number one.
We're going to move people. I don't even think I should.
We'll take one out.
I don't think you realize how big my lock is.
>> He didn't go in there. Don't boast.
>> In case he's been jumped, he might be in the cover. I don't know how. Let's have a look at these spiders then. I better close in on them. Give you a bigger Make it look a bit bigger.
>> Huge.
>> Yeah, that's all right.
>> Yep.
>> It's the That's the other one I'm looking at. That's the one. If you can get it out without Watch his claw. He's locked onto the net.
Right. He's let go now.
He's got it again.
Look at that one.
>> Massive.
>> Massive.
>> Catch and release. Catch and release.
>> Catch and release.
>> And this one.
>> Try and flip him over if you can. That make your life easier to get it out.
There you go. Look at that. That's a proper crab.
>> Yeah.
>> Nice one. That nice big claws.
Yeah.
Yep. But there's bigger and we're on the hunt for them.
Heat.
Heat.
high down the edge of it.
on the reef.
See, they're they're kill them. They are so sharp. When they're tiny like this, they are incredibly sharp spines on them. They even go through the gloves if you're not careful.
That's what protects them from occup.
Yeah.
Well, I bet that's size, but not for us.
>> You want the big ones?
>> That one is small, but I'm going to put it in the bucket. Yeah, put it in the pocket for now. We always sort them out at the end. We just pick the ones we want from there.
Let's get Brown crab. Don't see many of them these days.
>> Right, we're going to try a bit of fishing.
Drop the motor.
Push that.
A nice big mackerel. I mean massive mackerel. Should I say?
>> Massive.
>> Oh, there you go.
in that pocket.
Slow it.
as well.
Found it. Coming.
small bass.
I actually stopped the line. Just wait a sec and felt it bite it and then back he goes on.
Look at these beauties.
Hear that? That was the crash of the giant mackerel landing in the pocket.
Water might doing a few inshore ones again. We only checked him yesterday, so we'll give him a quick check. So, we're probably going to skip tomorrow.
Yeah, if it is nice, we can come out super early. Get out literally in almost dark and start heading out there.
It be a better tide really.
A big crab, but it has a crab. Grab it. Yeah.
Yeah, I know. Check them.
>> Big pot. Big crab.
I can see the weed. Look, there's the kelp right there.
And the pot's in the kelp. No, it's not.
It's just off the edge, I think.
Yeah, you can see the edge here. Look, the gravel and that kind of where you want it cuz they sit in the clumps of weed just underneath the edges of them, you know.
If there's any there, of course.
Big crab.
Like I said, >> those beauties.
>> Classic pot for spider crabs. square box spot.
>> That's what you want. Then you'll get them like that. Look at those.
>> Look at these two humongous.
Look at that beauties. E. Feel the weight of that.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Heavy, eh?
>> As I say, they're like cannonballs when you pick them up.
>> Yeah. Big crab. Those definitely big.
And then you got that one as well.
Yeah.
Okay.
Let it go there.
>> Well, it turned into a really nice day.
And uh we're just taking some crab in.
We got some in there. We got a few more here. We got mixture from a few from the other day as well.
The size of those mackerel. Still can't the size of them. They're huge. Huge mackerel.
And there's something else in there. Oh yeah. Almost forgot about the the big male lobster. Look at the size of those claws on that lobster. The lobster is not enormous. It's normal size. Look at the claws. They're absolutely huge.
Anyway, we got him before the octopus did.
>> Yep. He was in there with him.
>> Mhm.
>> He didn't get him though. He's still alive. So he he didn't get bitten. But it just shows that the octopus will go for even lobster that big. So >> right, time for it to go and have a coffee and some breakfast, I think.
>> I think so. Yeah.
