Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticizes Finnish President Alexander Stubb's candidacy as EU negotiator with Russia, arguing that effective diplomatic negotiators must enjoy public trust, avoid Russophobia, and demonstrate genuine commitment to peaceful resolution; Russia maintains it has never refused negotiations but requires Western parties to demonstrate substantive willingness to address Russia's fundamental security interests before engaging in dialogue.

Russia Says Finland’s Stubb Tops the Anti-Russia List | RU-ENAjouté :
Yes, good afternoon, Maria Vladimirovna. Today, we have one question.
The publication Politico named three EU candidates for the role of negotiator with Russia: former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of Finland Alexander Stubb, and ex-Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi.
Subsequently, Merkel and Draghi declined this proposal, and only Stubb remained.
And our question is: how does the Russian side assess this, and specifically, Stubb's candidacy for the role of a possible negotiator?
You know, this situation somewhat resembles the films of Gaidai.
Just like, you know, I can see these "trios" being formed as if by a template.
If we are talking about negotiators who could, so to speak, represent countries – we are not talking about any specific situation right now, but simply about the approach – then, probably, these should be people who enjoy the trust of the peoples of their countries, who have not descended and do not descend to outright nationalism, in particular Russophobia, and who are capable of making a constructive contribution to the negotiation process.
Probably, such should be the basic characteristics of those who, in principle, in principle, contemplate their mediation role or who sees someone in it. We have never refused any negotiations.
On the contrary, this has been repeatedly emphasized at the highest level, we have always advocated for resolving all existing disagreements with our Western neighbors by diplomatic means.
Now, I’d like to return. I have a small debt here.
And I, well, last time, promised to share some interesting, so to speak, observations specifically regarding Stubb, so that you could understand for yourselves, so to speak, how – and in what role – not even how we see him, but how he presents himself.
I believe this was a question from the news portal news.ru.
So, let's, so to speak, "a debt paid soon is well repaid", therefore I will return to this topic in detail and dwell on it.
Stubb makes a very large number of statements, from time to time we comment on them, as you know, at briefings or promptly upon media requests. The last time, as far as I remember, was in February of this year.
On our website, there is even a special section: "Examples of the use of “hate speech” against Russia and Russophobic statements by politicians and public figures of foreign states."
You know, Stubb is one of the most frequently cited guests on these lists. Of his recent initiatives, we noted the following.
In March, reacting to the US president's call to allies – these were the US president's calls to allies to send their ships to the Hormuz Strait – he called on Europe to offer US President Trump a “deal”: help in the operation against Iran in exchange for an increase in American military aid to Ukraine.
A normal peacemaker, a negotiator, right? And it would be difficult to come up with a more self-exposing European militarization, or a more self-exposing philosophy and idea of European militarism.
Instead of continuing or offering help in settling these two conflicts, the EU – well, if you read Stubb – is only fueling these conflicts, moreover, pitting them against each other and plunging the entire situation into some kind of absolute dive.
Humanistic principles, the "spirit of Helsinki", which 50 years ago helped the emergence of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, are overthrown, crossed out, and consigned to oblivion by such statements.
Russophobic revanchism and a thirst for profit from military orders, and the corruption of the "coalition of the willing" define the politics of Northern Europe today.
On May 11, in an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Stubb said that it is time for Europe to start an independent dialogue with Russia.
That is, how is that? With one hand they will be nudging Trump so that he increases military aid to the Kiev regime, while at the same time they themselves will be posing as negotiators with our country?
According to Stubb, if U.S. policy toward Russia and Ukraine ceases to correspond to the interests of Europe, European countries need to independently build direct interaction with Moscow.
Regarding the possibility of resuming dialogue, by the way, we noticed that he speaks with, you know, approximately a half-year cyclicality.
In this case, I want to quote the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov.
He noted that "if they expect that they will declare that they are ready to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia and we will run there – no.
We want to understand what they will be ready to bring to contacts with us, and then we will decide." End quote.
One must not forget another thing. The states of the "collective West", including Finland, have placed their bet on – they themselves formulated it this way, remember the name they invented – the "strategic defeat" of Russia.
Within the framework of this line, they do not stop pumping the Kiev regime with armaments, military equipment, and other types of assistance.
They are increasing sanction pressure on our country, trying by all means to disrupt the negotiation process on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, even though they do not participate in it, they still try to disrupt it, to hinder it in the utopian hope that at a certain stage in the future, Ukraine, as some say, will "gain the upper hand".
Periodically, the impression is created that the Finnish leadership has fallen into nostalgia for the times of the Second World War, when Helsinki helped another Nazi regime destroy Russia and carry out genocide against the peoples of the Soviet Union.
Periodically they let this slip, declaring a mythical "victory" over the Soviet Union.
Well, we will also post links to our refutation of all this in the briefing.
Support for the neo-Bandera regime in Kiev has led to nothing.
Nevertheless, the Finns and other Europeans are trying, in essence, to keep up a good face during an abominable game, continuing to declare the opposite on all platforms.
At the same time, they add that it is necessary to prepare – again, here are the quotes I've written down – for a "prolonged conflict". Good negotiators, right?
Such a line, it must be assumed, is designed not only to create a certain favorable informational background for aggressive Ukrainian propaganda, but also to justify, first and foremost, the multi-billion infusions in favor of the independent one, which the Russophobically minded governments of Western countries carry out to the detriment of the interests of their own citizens, pushing and stimulating monstrous corruption not only in Ukraine, but also in the Western European space.
I will emphasize once again, for our part, we have never refused a substantive discussion of ways to settle the crisis around Ukraine, which, however, must without fail take into account, I note, the fundamental interests of Russia in the sphere of national security.
A corresponding mindset on the part of European leaders, as you can see from the quotes and in steps, including by Finnish President Stubb, is not observed today.
We note exactly the opposite processes.
Once again, I want to clearly state – the goals outlined by the Russian leadership are extremely clear, have a foundation and a legal basis beneath them, and will be fulfilled, as the Russian leadership has repeatedly emphasized.
