A microburst is a severe thunderstorm phenomenon characterized by intense downward air movement that spreads out upon hitting the ground, creating damaging wind speeds of 60-70 mph; unlike tornadoes, microbursts show minimal rotation on radar but can cause significant damage including power outages and structural destruction, making it essential to seek shelter immediately when thunder is heard during summer storms.

Microburst hits SE Greensboro, what’s that?
Added:A severe thunderstorm rolled through parts of Greensboro and McLeansville on Sunday afternoon. I'm Tim Buckley with WFM Y. This was a doozy and it only affected a small area. This type of storm had many people asking, "What in the world just hit us? Was that a tornado?" As we look at the storm on radar, there's really not a lot of rotation, but what we can tell, this is a classic downburst or microburst. And what that is is something that can be just as damaging as a tornado. We're looking at a summertime thunderstorm here. On hot and humid days, you have air going up and air going down. And when that air going down rushes out kind of all at once and collapses, it can create some intense wind speeds. We estimate between about 60 and 70 mph wind gusts. We're seeing essentially in the southeast Greensboro area, really along Youngs Mill Road, Lee Street, that particular area stretching up through parts of McLeansville. This is a bad storm. Lots of damage out there. Couple thousand people were without power for a few hours and much of the day on Sunday, really. But it goes to show you, in the summertime, if you hear thunder, really a best idea to get inside because these things can form without all that much warning.
