Exit polls are statistical surveys conducted after voting begins to predict election outcomes, but they can be unreliable due to factors like anti-incumbency, unprecedented voter turnout, and silent voters who don't reveal their preferences. In the 2021 West Bengal elections, different pollsters gave conflicting predictions—Matrix and Pmark projected a BJP majority (146-175 seats), while People's Pulse predicted a Trinamool Congress victory (177-187 seats). The elections witnessed a historic 92-93% voter turnout, with significant female participation, and both parties remained confident despite the exit poll predictions, demonstrating that ground realities often differ from statistical projections.

WB Polls: Exit Polls Predict BJP Edge In Bengal As TMC Rejects Numbers Amid Historic Voter TurnoutAdded:
a significant number of pollsters giving a edge to the BJP paving the way for its first ever victory in West Bengal. The margins though remain razor thin. Some projections even place the BJP in the 146 to 161 seat range in this 294 member assembly. That is by the Matrice which is [music] saying that the NDA could be in 146 to 161 range. means the Trenumul Congress between 125 to 140. Uh if you look at the poll diary that is perhaps giving the biggest range and even the Praa poll between 180 to 271 to the BJP the Trinamul Congress is 99 to 127. Uh people's pulse is reversing this trend.
It is of the opinion that Trin Congress is really up there that [music] there's visibly some anti-inccumb to give space to the challenger BJP.
People's pulses of the opinion that Reinmul Congress is likely to be in the range of 177 to 187 and below and BJP between 95 to 110. Park is giving [music] an upper range to the B uh BJP.
It is between 150 to 175. The thrm congress between 118 to 138. We are waiting for the access my India numbers today. It is likely to come later in u you know perhaps by the evening. Uh there are a number of these pollsters if you look at it there are two pollsters in these numbers uh which are giving an advantage to to Trinimal Congress while others are saying that the challenger BJP could have managed it this time around. Remember the BJP has been trying to make inroads in Bengal since 2014 ever since Prime [music] Minister Modi became prime minister in 2014. Uh lots of political reactions coming in on the exit poll numbers. Let's listen in.
Exit.
[clears throat] Anti-inc. Income votion 294 even 200 100% extra vote anti-inc.
I do not believe in exit PS at all. My experience is that in the past most exit PS went wrong.
I've seen the exit PS as have appeared in different TV channels.
most show in favor of BJP. One uh exit poll shows in favor of TMC. I do not give cred to either Congress.
Exit.
Weather office. Weather report.
I contact party.
K BJP Congress CP both the BJP and the Trinamur Congress remain confident of outperforming the exit poll predictions. In fact, there is a great degree of disbelief that this number could be really achieved. The Trinamur Congress has dismissed the exit polls altogether, insisting that the ground reality tells a different story and that public support remains firmly with the chief minister Mohammad Banerjee. Let me bring in Tapash who joins us live. Tabash what are you hearing in the corridors of power in Bengal in Kolkata?
>> Well well Mar you've been here uh this time around you know that uh the situation this time around in West Bengal is very very different the political party especially BJP and threadul congress they both are seem to be very very confident about the number game. uh but after the exit poll came out yesterday the number of exit polls that uh were published we we see that Trinal Congress is not buying that they are not endorsing to any of the exit poll they say as Madan Mitra little while said that that whenever you predict something in Bengal it goes the opposite way but somehow the the BJP also seems to be very very confident especially uh the if you look at the leaders uh since yesterday they are very confident and they are even um picking up ISS issues like why Mota Banerjee first time around hopping around boots this time which he never does so that means the BJP is gaining seats but situation on the ground is very very different from whatever you and I have witnessed there's anti-inccumbency factor there's a sir factor the huge force deployment was there there's question of unemployment some people want change some people say that they have got immensely benefited by the social schemes laid down by mutab manager government so overall both the parties seem to be very confident at the moment, but we'll have to wait for some more time. But this time around, unprecedented turnout of voters. General Patton says that when there's an unprecedented uh turnout of voters and there is an anti-inccumbancy factor, it generally goes against uh the political party in power. But if you see the history in Bengal elections they this have happened in multiple occasion 80 85% vote and everybody predicted that it could go well against the the party in power being in the left regime be in during turnable congress regime it have always been very opposite as far as Bengal election is concerned and this time around since there is a huge chunk of the silent voters who are not speaking at all pertaining to what they think or what they feel. No, you have made an interesting point about the silent voters. Something that I sensed on ground as well in Bengal. They would not reveal their choices although they did say which party they voted for which was largely Trinamul Congress in 2021.
So my question then would be to you has that fear of the administration or the local Trinamur Congress leaders gone?
Well to a lot of extent yes because uh see I've been covering mushid dabad I have seen mushid the elections in yesterday years people in different pockets were very scared to come out and cast the mandate but this time around people have come out in large number I've been to fala diamond harbor where we had witnessed violence in large scale uh in yesterday years but this time around barring a few aberrations in certain pockets we haven't seen any major vi violence taking place in these districts. People have come out to cast their vote in large numbers especially the participation of women voters and the um and senior citizens have been ab very not noticeable this time. I spoke to several uh voters especially female voters who who said that it's been ages that they have not been uh but they have not been able to cast their mandate but this time around they have come out to exercise their mandate. So that gives you a sense that that sense of fear that was there within hearts and minds of the people in earlier elections did was not there this time. Credit goes to election convention obviously because of the huge force deployment that was done the the area dominations went on for days and weeks before election that have gained confidence within hearts and minds and yes obviously on the day of poll the kind of picture that we are we we we generally see we haven't witnessed similar incidents or similar picture this time around people came out and by far it has been a very very peaceful election and the numbers tell you all that 92 93% voter turnout. It's a historic number post independence as election commission claims is what we had witnessed on ground that people came in large number they queued outside booths from 6:00 a.m. in the morning and once uh the voting started at 7:00 they flocked in to cast their do we have that break continued even >> our or break up of the female and the male voters and then I bring in the actual numbers that we have seen the female and the male voters >> well the uh exact percentage we need to uh check with the election commission at this moment but the what election commission says the number of female voters or the women voters have been very very high this time around the male voters generally come out and cast their vote.
But as far as female voters are concerned in urban area in Kolkata as well, we we haven't seen such a turnout of the women voters who came out to exercise their mandate. The numbers of Kolkata is yet to come. So we can we can overall if you see the picture 92% in second phase, 93% in the first place gives you a sense that the male and the female voters came out in large number to exercise their mandate and that's what the election commission also believes can be a turning point this time. Whoever wins uh the election commission says that it's victory of the democracy people have were given a chance and they have in cash that to cast their vote and choose their own government and what exact result will be will have to wait till 4th of May. the parties at large BJP and trade clearly.
