This video demonstrates the process of installing a transmission cover on a vintage British motorcycle, highlighting key repair techniques including using longer screws to reach unused threads at the bottom of holes, selecting appropriate GL4 transmission oil for older bikes with bronze bushings (as opposed to modern GL5 oils designed for precision bearings), and implementing practical fastener solutions when original screws are stripped, such as using slightly larger diameter bolts with close-matching threads to secure components temporarily.

2026-06-03 - 74 Norton - Yellow - Tranny Cover Installed追加:
Okay, I'm going to try to put the cover on now. I've got everything set up.
Theoretically, I always tried to put the cover on and get this little poker inside that little hole like like well doing this and it was horrible. It's hard. You know, I put a hook down here and try to line it up.
And then one day Kevin was over here and I watched him because [laughter] I'll let him do it. And dog on it, he just simply took this part out.
Maybe just far enough to see what he was doing. I don't remember if it was all the way out or just far enough. But anyway, let's try it just far enough. Uh caution. This this this may entail uh strong language that could upset some viewers.
Viewer discretion is advised.
>> [laughter] >> I just hang it hanging away.
All right, that seems to um have gone in.
Well, oh, here's my new um my new impact tool. Uh, if id thought ahead, I would have bought something from from Ryobi so I could use my other batteries, but I didn't think ahead. I saw this, liked it, bought it. I tend to do that.
So far, I'm pleased with it.
In case you're wondering, this is a 3/8 socket, drive socket, and that I um had to Allen.
I I ground it way down and had the Allen uh put in I think just epoxied in place. Makes it very handy. What this is was a a socket welded to a quarter inch drive socket here with the 38 drive. In other words, a a size down.
Anyway, I don't know if that makes sense, but it's a very very handy Very very handy socket to have.
And then once I put them in, now I can go around Please don't be strict. Oh god, I love that so much.
What can you say?
Two out of five strips. And no, it didn't just happen.
Isn't that just a shame?
What we'll do is try slightly longer screws because believe it or not, at the bottom of these holes, there's usually extra threads.
Now, I guarantee they weren't stripped by my use of that little of my All right. My um impact tool dog on it. I don't want to take this cover off.
sort of holding it at an angle.
[sighs] Oh, dog. I don't want to take the cover off.
People, people, people, why do you do this Let's see if we can get this one out now.
Here we go.
Well, I'm going to look for some longer screws.
I'll be back.
Well, just like the g the um the little gaskets that I showed you yesterday, over the 20 years or so, I've uh accumulated a whole lot of stuff.
This is a good bag.
These, of course, these are biggin.
And these are of course Allens.
These are coarse nice little uh some of each. Don't know why.
These are coarse case bolts.
These are more coarse case bolts. You don't know why I have two bags. Two bags. Two bags. Two bags full.
and [groaning] big bolts and shiny big bolts.
Don't know why I have those.
More shiny big bolts.
Big shiny bolts.
And a whole bunch of bolts with spacers on them of which I purchased and built for reasons unknown. But right now, let's go into this bag and see if I can find some of these a little bit longer.
Interestingly, these look at the ones.
These are the ones that came out.
and they've got holes drilled in the top for safety wire. And I'll bet you a book that these threads are not threads are that uh match the case. These are probably good old USA close threads that somebody stuck in there.
So, here's one very similar a little Nope. Same length.
Very close. I'm going to try these. This one and this one. Let's see. Let's try Let's see if I can find Allens.
Okay, these are two Allens. Very similar. I'll bet you a buck these are the right threads. And these are American crap.
>> [snorts] >> Let's just do a walk over and see what happens.
Okay, there you go. A little bit longer. Get in there to the unused screws with unused threads.
Same same All right.
Yeah. And the bottom of the holes is usually about a quarter of an inch of unused threads. They thread them deeper than they use them. That comes in handy sometimes.
All right. So, that cover is back on.
[sighs] Now that I've got it all put together, let's see if it shifts. All right. I'll put it up in there and see what happens.
Okay, so the bike is up in the air.
Let's see if it'll shift.
Please, please, please neutral.
Second, third, fourth. [laughter] It actually shifts.
Neutral.
All right.
How about them apples? [applause] Let's go ahead and hook up the rest of it and put some oil in it.
We'll be back in a minute.
Okay, so I'm going to put this uh oil in the I use a Redline MT90.
And I use it because it says right here, GL4, high-performance lubricant for manual and transmissions and transaxxles. Now, GL4 that the new modern uh oils are GL5. And the thing of it is they're made for modern transmissions that have really neat bearings in them.
Uh we don't have really neat bearings.
First of all, we got some bronze bushings in there. And second, the bearings are pretty big. So you you don't the the new oil is actually not good for these u these old transmissions. GL4 will protect the bronze bushings. So I use MT90 red line.
Uh I've got a chart on the wall that says the in these bikes takes 18 ounces. And I'm going to and then I've crossed that out. I don't know why I crossed it out, but I crossed it out and then marked in 15 ounces. So, I'm going to go over there and start with 15 ounces and eyeball the level and see um what happens. [snorts] This is the point where one time I poured the oil in here and as fast as I poured it in here, it came out down there. It's the old Don't forget to put the the uh drain plug in. So, let's pour this in and see if we get anything pouring back out.
So far so good.
Now, I'm going to eyeball this because what we've got here at this point on the side, this is a level bolt.
Oil, you take that out and when the oil comes out, you've got the right level.
All right. So, I just sort of eyeball it by looking inside and I can see that that oil level right now is right at that bolt. If I took that bolt out, it would just barely seep out because it's right there. So, I'm going to go with 15 ounces. 18 would overflow the uh the uh drain bolt hole. I don't see any advant advantage to it. So, uh all right, that's done. I'll finish dressing this out. the the clutch is on and operational and I'm going to put the cover on. I'm going to put the kicker on that. The kicker is the next thing I need to test.
Okay, so you can see the uh the new seal.
Do this and do let's see do this.
There's the new seal.
So, we'll see how it goes. All right.
So, I'm going to do some more put some more stuff on it.
All right. So far so good. I'm going to put this cap on now. And I just discovered that on one of these one of these screws, there's plumbers's thread around the screw. Why would there be plumbers plumbers thread? Well, there would be plumbers's thread because somebody stripped the screw.
So, let's just um try screw in this one. Find out what it feels like.
Feels like it's got good threads.
[sighs] This one has good threads with no wobble.
Well, let's just see what happens.
And that's the one. No. Yep. Completely threaded, stripped, [sighs] I swear.
Oh, it's on one and a half.
Look at that. That is completely and totally stripped. Dog on it.
Once again, it's a not original Allen head.
Threads probably were close enough.
So, um, let's just force it in there.
tug on it.
Let's see what I have.
All right. Uh, here's an ugly fix. I found a um screw head bolt, slightly larger diameter, threads close enough to catch some threads. It's in there tight. And I'm gonna leave it like that.
So, it's tight. So, both of these are tight now.
Okay. Not a great fix. The true thing thing I should do is drill out both of these abutments in there, thread them, put in matching bolts on both sides.
It's not my bike, and I'm not going to go drilling and threading on a bike that I don't own. Um, and even if the client said, "Yeah, do it." I don't want to do it. This will hold it close. It's not that ugly. It'll last another 20 years.
And Bob's your uncle. So, we're done.
All right. So, this guy seems to be complete. Everything's back together. It shifted through the gears. Clutch seems to work. Um, I'm going to invite Kevin down to kick her over and do a test ride and hopefully call her done. So, that's where she is right now. Pending test ride.
