While 99% reliability is a technical feat, the final 1% of critical errors remains the chasm between a helpful assistant and a safe driver. Tesla’s current progress proves that "almost there" is still nowhere near ready for unsupervised reality.

Is Tesla Self-Driving ready to go Unsupervised? | V14.3.2追加:
What is going on, guys? This is another FSD version 14.3.2 video. I'm just going to do some kind of running around here.
Rough start with the wheel. Good job by the car slowing because there's a person coming. That little like jittery indecisiveness though isn't great. Um, I'm just going to do like a 20-minute loop here and then end at Tesla because I actually noticed yesterday I was filming a different video that should be out soon. But these cameras seem to be actually quite dirty. Like I'll put the video up right now, but I was in the settings looking at the camera preview explaining how to do it. And in doing so, I noticed my cameras are quite dirty. It is something that I recommend that people do is go into the settings, look at what your front cameras show for cleanliness. And if they're dirty, book a service appointment. I mean, I think technically Tesla says they'll charge you after your first visit being free, but I don't think they should charge you. I think if you're paying monthly for full self-driving and your cameras that are like not really accessible are dirty, I I think that's on Tesla to clean. So, your mileage may vary. For me, I'm fortunate. The people here in Langley are super nice and they've always cleaned it for me for free, so I'm assuming they'll do the same today.
But anyways, what I wanted to kind of talk about mostly today is full self-driving unsupervised.
Um, I think it's become a bit of a heated debate. I posted I replied to somebody yesterday where they were saying like the nag on FSD is makes it unusable. And I've made plenty of videos about it or talked about it plenty of times in videos. I think the nag for a supervised piece of software is incredibly forgiving. like you can do a lot before the car is like striking you out or getting like really critical with the nag. Um I think it's good enough. I don't think it needs to be relaxed anymore until it becomes full self-driving unsupervised.
And let me know in the comments like do you agree? Do you think that's wrong?
But I don't know. I I I think for an imperfect piece of software we're allowed to look away for quite a while.
And then that kind of brings up my second question is do you think for those of you that use full self-driving specifically version 14 which I know hasn't been out that long do you think we should be able to look away from the road? Do you think full self-driving unsupervised is ready I guess is my question.
Um, you know, in a lot of the replies to my video, people or to my post, people seem to say like this should be an unsupervised piece of software at this point because it's so close to being perfect. And I do agree that it's very, very, very good. I just think that it can still make mistakes often enough.
Okay, we're pulling in here.
Couldn't be more people watching this car mess up this park job. Oh no.
Let's see. On the line in front of like 10 people. The broccoli hair kids are in shambles right now. So, we're going to continue the drive and get out of here.
So, we're on the line. That was like a bad park job, I'd say.
And yeah, I mean I agree that like currently the mistakes that FSD makes usually aren't safety critical. Like parking clearly is a problem for FSD still. Navigation a huge problem for FSD still. Both of those things, in my opinion, could continue to be problems and we could still get full self-driving unsupervised because the car making a wrong turn, as long as it's not a safety issue, that that's fine. Like, if I'm not supervising the car and it makes a wrong turn and adds five minutes to my drive, I'll be annoyed. But I don't think that's a reason for unsupervised to not exist.
And that's kind of an important distinction. Same with parking. Like I think full self-driving unsupervised can exist and destination parking can be so far from being solved because the reality is you just will probably have to take over at the very end or watch the car park at the end and then fix if it makes a little mistake like it just did. But the issue with the navigation stuff that clearly is a problem is I've seen plenty of videos even on version 14 of the car putting itself in right turn only lanes and going straight. To me that borderline safety critical like it's illegal which I don't think unsupervised should be doing anything illegal ever. And yeah, trying to go straight in a right turn only lane could probably lend you in an accident or or in a bad situation that could become an accident. So for as long as that's happening, I don't think we should have unsupervised FSD.
But it's hard because it's so so so good 99% of the time and it so rarely makes safety critical mistakes that I like even myself it's easy to become complacent with the software and trust it explicitly.
And it's this I've talked about it on a bunch of my videos, but it's this weird gray area where we're going to get to the point where FSD is so good and it's already happening, people don't want to pay attention to it cuz it's like, why would I watch this? It's always good. Let me just play on my phone. Let me do this, let me do that. Like people are already complaining, but we're just not quite there yet. I don't know. So, I don't know. What do you think? Do you And Do you supervise it all the time? Do you look away from the road? Do you put on sunglasses and watch your phone? Like, how do you treat FSD today? We should move up a little bit. I guess that's fine. Okay, nice job here.
All right, pulling into the parking lot here at Okado. Huge shout out to Okadoo, by the way. If you live in the area and you like good food, highly recommend it.
Even if you don't live in the area, if you live in Vancouver or anywhere near the Lower Mainland, this is We've traveled quite a bit. This is the best ramen I think I've ever had in my life.
So, very, very good food here. And they're just great people. Great park job. This is perfect. This is the kind of behavior I want to see. We're the pin was here at at Okado and we parked at the first spot.
We're not at the front door, but to be honest, I prefer that. We took we took a parking spot and we're close enough.
It's like a two second walk. So, that was really good. That was a great great great destination park.
Well done.
And it seems like I think it was like 51% of the fleet or something like that is on 14.3.2 now which is good. But then it also does seem like the rollout has effectively stopped which is a little bit confusing.
Um I think it was 3 or 4 days ago. I'm not quite sure. They added the new intervention screen. I can show it to you. So this is the new screen that pops up when you're driving. Um, and it asks why did you intervene? You have to choose one of the things. Nothing else you do makes it go away. It stays up forever. If you bring up the cameras, if you do everything like that, it will stay there. The one little like tip that I can give for anybody that is on version 14.3.2 and doesn't like this screen, um, if you double tap, I'll show you once we finish the turn here. If you double tap the microphone icon because you can still leave a voice note like you could before, but if you just one two it and then you can swipe it away or you don't even have to swipe it away.
Like you could do that, double tap the microphone and then after two or 3 seconds here it'll go away on its own.
So if you intervene for a reason that doesn't feel like it's one of those four things, I would just press the microphone button twice. I'm curious for those of you that have it or those of you that don't have it but have seen this. What do you think of the new intervention screen? Is it good?
I think it makes sense. Like Tesla's looking for like refined data to like improve FSD because I think we're at the point where like they need that very specific data to train to make full self-driving better. I think it's hilarious that they released it with navigation not being one of the options given that that is a huge issue for them. And I also think it's surprising that like something like potholes isn't another option on that menu because potholes navigation those are like probably 95% of the reasons that I will ever disengage. Or like maybe not even pothole but like road debris like saying that the car missed something being on the road. I think that would be another good option.
Um, but I I like it. It makes sense.
Thank god they cleaned up the UI and they made it not block your maps. Like the first version of it was rough and I'm shocked that they released it, but it is much better. I do still think that it needs to be something that you can opt out of because there are going to be people that are paying $100 a month that don't want to give the feedback for whatever reason. There doesn't they don't need to have a reason. The reality is like if you're paying for a piece of software, you shouldn't need to give your feedback in that way or make it $90 a month for people that do choose to give that data in some way to incentivize it, right?
Great park job. We're here. Let's go to Tesla now.
But yeah, the roll out seems to be basically stopped again, which is confusing. I don't really understand Tesla's like roll out schedule. I don't know why um not everybody has like if they're going to push people to this version, why don't they just push everybody to this version? And the same thing goes for the spring update. Like I think not everybody that can have the spring update has the spring update. Like if they've got this new version that they're advertising and saying it's so good, why would you I understand going 0 to 100 is a lot and doesn't allow it for any testing and whatever, but like at this point that 50% of the cars have it, why are you slowing the roll out to basically zero? And then you have some people in 14225 that are annoyed that they're not getting update. some people on 1431 that want 14. You know what I mean? Like it just makes this weird fragmentation and people are going to be upset when they see Tesla saying, you know, oh, check out our new software. It does X. And it's like, well, I don't have your new software. Why don't I have your new software? When do I get your new software? I don't know.
And in case you missed it, I finally released a new um FSD Uber Eats video with Jay and I. So, that went up on the channel on Friday, I think.
>> No.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, dear.
>> Oh, it smells fishy.
>> Fishy.
>> Who's using Skip?
>> It's done quite poorly. It's a 10 out of 10, which for anybody that creates content on YouTube, that's always hurts to see, but everybody in the comments seems to enjoy it. So, I'm happy that it's for those of you that have watched it and are enjoying it and have replied and let me know that you like the video, that's great. For anybody that hasn't clicked it for whatever reason, I recommended. I think it turned out well.
Like, it's it's fun. Like, it's cool that Jay and I get to go out together and film these things. And that for the most part, you all seem to enjoy it because it's I like to spend time with Jay and I like full self-driving. So, if I get to spend time with Jay showing off full self-driving and making like a little bit of money on Uber Eats, it's kind of like a perfect situation. I But yeah, we probably will do one more now that 14.3 is out. So, there should be a new one soon. And truthfully, if that one doesn't do well again, I don't know if we'll do them again. Like, people rightfully so might get burnt out on these series. So, um, yeah, give it a like, give it a comment if you enjoy it, and if you're watching this and you enjoy the channel, we're really close to 10,000 subscribers. I think I'm at like 9,500 now. Um, subscribe please if you haven't already.
It helps me out a ton and it's just a cool milestone that I'm looking forward to hitting. So, 10,000 will be a neat one.
Okay, nice job here.
drive has been really good. Obviously, FSD is great.
As much as I go online and say like unsupervised isn't ready and I talk about the mistakes that FSD makes, I'm still blown away by how good it is. It's cool that we've done all this driving and the car has done everything. It's pretty insane.
That said, I bet it's going to make a mistake here. Unless they fixed it, it always pulls into the wrong dealership, which is funny because full self-driving, not being able to get into a Tesla dealership seems pretty bad. Like, wouldn't that mean that every person that takes a demo drive with FSD ends up at the wrong place if they're trying to use it to come home? So, here we go. Oh, no. Okay, we're good this time. It It pulls into that parking lot often, but this was good. Nice job.
All right. pulling in. If it takes one of these spots or one of those spots, it's perfect. Right here, customer parking.
Nice job.
Beautiful. So, I'll show you like for me if I go to camera preview right now. So, if we look at main, it doesn't actually look that bad. Main and wide look pretty fine right now. It's again like I will have put the video up from earlier. It's when there's like sun glare directly on it that you see that it's bad. And it definitely was dirty on the inside because I had like squeegeeed the outside of the glass earlier in the day.
So, um yeah, let me see if they have time to do it right now. Okay, so they're going to do it at 2. So, I'm actually going to head to my job right now and I'll just kind of finish my drive and talk to you guys along the way.
We got a car. That's what a spot to stop. Okay.
A little hesitant back here, but that's okay.
Something that I'm just going to bring up since there was I guess depending if you saw the 360 camera or the internal the wipers went off twice there which I do think is partially going to be fixed when I clean this glass because I think a lot of the dry wipes is the camera thinking that it's dirty and the camera is going to think it's dirty if the glass is dirty, right? But for me like part of my like muscle memory almost what's it going to do here?
Nice job.
Part of my muscle memory with FSD usually when I'm turning it on is I then go here here and turn off the auto wipers just because especially on days like this I don't need the auto wipers since it's sunny like it's not going to rain.
You don't need potentially have the wipers on. You can also do that from the steering wheel. I can press here. Scroll down to off right here down. Um, I'm bringing that up because in the comments when I was talking about the nag not being bad, someone was saying the nag is atrocious. It takes me 6 seconds to turn off the auto wipers which go off all the time. Blah blah blah. If I can't even turn off the auto wipers without getting nagged, this software sucks. I mean, my reply to that was, "How does it take you 6 seconds to do this?" Right? Let's time it. Let's time it. One, two, three.
I don't think that was 6 seconds. And I could see it being longer while you're figuring it out for the first time. But like once you've done this more than once, it's a really simple thing. But anyways, that's my recommendation. When you're starting FSD, if it's dry out and you're getting like dry wipes, just turn off auto wipers.
Is it annoying that it happens and that you need to do that? Absolutely. It's stupid. And but I'm not just going to sit here and be negative and critique things for the sake of being overly negative about something. That doesn't really help things. Like I'll complain when there's a problem and bring it up.
But to like continue to complain about that problem and be like negative and dwell about it, it's not good content.
It's not helping anybody. Tesla is well aware that dry wipes are a thing.
So yeah, just my thoughts.
I still wish, and maybe it'll come with time. I wish FSD understood those blinking lights more because I think it's maybe just a Canada only thing. We passed those going the speed limit, which means by the time we got to the lights, the light was going to be yellow. So, for the like past four seconds as we were coming up to that light, I knew that we were going to end up slamming the brakes on in a weird way, especially with there being a person sitting here ready to turn left because FSD has no idea what those lights mean. It barreled towards this intersection with no contextual understanding that the lights were going to turn yellow at like the worst time possible. Um, yeah, I don't know. like I'll snapshot it in the hopes that maybe they can see that and train on the data because again I think it's a Canada only thing. Let me know if you're in the States and you have these lights as well. Um they're very useful if used properly. It helps you either go a little bit quicker so you catch the light or slow down so you're not hitting the yellow at like the worst time possible.
It's crazy how expensive gas is. So it's 224 a liter here. Um, and if you like convert the numbers against even like a really efficient car that's similar to a Tesla in size, I think charging at home, again, these are just BC numbers. Your mileage may vary depending on where you live, what car you drive, but it's like close to 10 times cheaper for me to drive this car than it would be to drive a gas car. Um, I've talked about it a bunch on my channel, but that is why we bought a Tesla and why we bought an EV is because two years ago gas was 206 a liter. I drive a lot.
Like I've owned the car for 2 years and I've owned the car for two years and we have 85,000 kilometers, right? So I drive just over 40,000 kilometers a year. And at 40,000 km a year paying gas versus electric prices. I mean, I'm going to ask Rock right now and see if it can do the math.
I I drive 40,000 km a year. And let's say gas prices are 224 a liter. Holy, the car is struggling right now. Okay, let's pause that. Car wants to do this.
Any human being would just do it, but technically it would be putting itself into the wrong lane. So, I can see its hesitation here, but it's fine. We're not missing a light as a result of this.
And I'd rather it air on the side of caution and not put us into the oncoming lane if it doesn't feel comfortable. So, that was fine. Okay, nice job. I think we're going to catch the light. It should go through. Yeah, amazing. This is the way better yellow light behavior that version 14.3 has now. So, that was a like stale yellow and we decided to go through it. Nice job. So, let me ask that question again.
If I drive 40,000 km a year, assume that I have a car comparable to a Tesla Model 3 with gas prices being 224 a liter. How much would I pay in gas during the whole year? And then compare that to the Model 3 which I get uh average of 118 W hours a kilometer and I pay uh 8 cents a lit 8 cents per kilowatt with overnight hydrocharging.
For a gas car like a Tesla Model 3 comparable, assuming around 7 12 L per 100 km, you'd use 3,000 L a year at $2.24 a liter, costing about $6,720.
The Model 3 at 118 W hours per km uses about 4,720 kwatt hours at 8 per kowatth costing roughly $378.
So, you'd save over $6,300 a year switching to electric, >> right? So, you s you save $6,000 a year, which is kind of the math that I came up with. And at $6,000 a year, that's what, five? That's $500 a month. That's close to a car payment. And truthfully, that was why I switched because I was like, it's cheaper for me to pay for a new vehicle that is electric than it is for me to continue to drive an old gas car.
And again, your mileage may vary. If you live somewhere and you can't super you can't charge at home, you have to supercharge or if your home charging costs more and your gas is cheaper, like those numbers start to change. But here in BC especially, and that's why you see so many Teslas on the road, the numbers just f that's another Tesla. like it it you're kind of crazy not to drive an electric vehicle. So yeah, I I think that's every time I crunch those numbers, it's like fascinating to me how efficient these are.
Plus, it drives for you. That part of it is kind of neat, too. But I bought this car not realizing how good self-driving was. That came after the fact.
Okay, so we are here.
Press of a button, three buttons technically or whatever because I had to Yeah, the car did great. Um, hope you enjoyed the video. It's kind of just one that I wanted to pop on here, talk to you about unsupervised, and see what everybody thought about version 14 so far. But let me know in the comments and I will see you guys on the next video. I do have one coming out very soon. I'm editing it right now, but it's basically like an FSD tips, tricks, and secrets. I don't know, like just little quality of life things that I would recommend for what you can do to make your full self-driving experience better. Um, but yeah. Oh. Oh, don't hit the bucket.
Let's see how we do here. Where is it trying to go?
Nice job.
Perfect.
Cool. Well done.
All right. See you guys in the next one.
Chiao.
