The Wheeler-DeWitt equation, published by Bryce DeWitt in 1967 based on John Wheeler's work, is a fundamental equation in quantum gravity that contains no time variable, unlike all other fundamental physics equations. This absence of time creates what physicists call 'the problem of time'—a 60-year unsolved puzzle suggesting that time as we experience it may not be a fundamental feature of the universe but rather an emergent property that appears only from the perspective of observers within the universe.

The Equation That Erases Time — Wheeler-DeWittHinzugefügt:
Every equation in physics has time in it. Newton's laws describe how things move over time. Maxwell's equations describe how fields change with time.
Schrödinger's equation, the foundation of quantum mechanics, measures how a wave function evolves from one moment to [music] the next. There is one equation that breaks this pattern.
In 1967, the physicist Bryce DeWitt published a single line of [music] mathematics that he believed described the entire universe quantum mechanically. It [music] was built on the work of John Wheeler, who had spent years trying to merge quantum theory with Einstein's general relativity. When they finished, [music] something was missing. Time. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation contains no time variable.
None. The symbol that appears [music] in every other fundamental equation of physics simply isn't there. DeWitt himself, when he first wrote it down, called it that damned equation.
>> [music] >> He didn't know what to do with what it was saying.
The reason is technical. When you apply quantum rules to the geometry of space-time, the equation treats every moment of the universe as part of a single frozen structure. From the perspective of the universe as a whole, nothing evolves, nothing changes, the wave function of everything just is.
Physicists call this the problem of time. For almost 60 years, [music] it has been one of the deepest unsolved puzzles in theoretical physics. If the equation is right, then time as we experience [music] it may not be a feature of the universe at may be something that appears only from inside to observers who happen to be made of clocks. Some physicists have tried to rescue time. Don Page and William Wootters showed [music] that time could re-emerge through quantum entanglement. One part of the universe acting as a clock for the rest of itself.
Others have [music] argued that the equation is telling us the truth.
Time is not fundamental. It is something the universe does, not something it contains. The equation has not been solved. It may never be solved in the form Wheeler and DeWitt wrote it, but it has made physicists [music] ask whether the most familiar feature of our experience is a property of reality at all, or only the shape reality takes when something inside it is paying attention. Somewhere in that equation, still [music] unanswered, is a question we have not learned how to read.
Perhaps time is not what the universe is made of. Perhaps it is what the universe [music] does when no one is looking away.
