These Dummies Tricked German Soldiers On D-Day

[00:00:00]One of the most famous paratroopers to make the jump on D-Day was this little guy who went by the name Rupert. He's a little small, sure, but don't underestimate him. Rupert was the nickname given to these stuffed parachute dummies, and although they don't look very convincing up close, when they were hanging from parachutes in the night sky, they looked extremely realistic. About 500 of these Rupert dolls were dropped by the British on D-Day to confuse the Germans and distract them from the real drop zones.

[00:00:25]Some of the dolls were equipped with explosive charges that detonated shortly after landing to draw the attention of Germans and also destroy the evidence.

[00:00:33]In some cases, British SAS troops even landed alongside the Ruperts and played the sounds of gunfire and soldiers yelling through speakers to confuse the Germans. This was known as Operation Titanic and it succeeded in drawing many German troops away from the real drop zones in those first crucial hours of the airborne invasion.
