On May 4th, Zalinski had announced that Ukraine would unilaterally declare a ceasefire beginning at midnight on May 6th. The move was a direct response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for a 2-day truce on May 8th and 9th, timed around Russia's Victory Day parade.
