They lived in small bands of 50 to 150 people. They hunted, they gathered, they watched the treeine for predators. They stored fat when food was available because tomorrow was never guaranteed.
They feared strangers because strangers from another tribe could kill them. They craved status because low status individuals in a small band often didn't survive winter. Your brain, he discovered, operates on two systems. One is fast, automatic, emotional, and ancient. The other is slow, deliberate, and rational. You think you're mostly using the second one. You're almost entirely using the first. That fast system, your stone age brain, wasn't built for accuracy. It was built for speed. Missing a real threat was fatal. So, your brain evolved to overreact. Your brain is designed to overreact, not as a flaw, as a feature. You still scan a stranger's face within a fraction of a second and decide whether they're a threat. You still feel a flash of tribal loyalty when your sports team wins. You still feel gut punch anxiety when excluded from a social group because for your ancestor, social exclusion wasn't just unpleasant, it was a death sentence. Loneliness feels catastrophic because it was catastrophic. A human alone on the savannah 100,000 years ago was a human about to die. Now think about the modern threats your ancient brain has been asked to process. A hostile email from your boss. A comment under a social media post. A bill you can't pay. You can lie awake catastrophizing about a future that may never arrive. Your brain cannot tell the difference between a real threat and a vividly imagined one. In the Stone Age, that floor was an advantage. The humans who worried about the coming winter before it arrived were the ones who survived it. Anxiety in its ancestral form was foresight. It kept you alive. The problem is your brain never learned to turn it off. Because in the Stone Age, the threat level never dropped to zero. There was always a predator, always a rival tribe, always scarcity on the horizon. Your brain was never meant to experience genuine safety. So when genuine safety arrives, it goes looking for danger anyway. This is why a perfect day can still feel vaguely wrong. This is why when nothing is bad, your brain starts hunting for something to be afraid of. The absence of threat feels suspicious. It always did. Everything dangerous was right in front of you. Now the threats are abstract, statistical, and distant. Your amigdala cannot process climate change or economic instability the way it processes a snake in the grass. So, it either ignores them entirely or fixates on something close and visible that stands in for the bigger, harder to see threat. This is why you'll scroll past a story about a million people affected by a distant disaster and feel almost nothing, but feel intense distress about a petty conflict at work. Your brain was designed for a world where the threats that mattered were close, personal, and immediate. Scale doesn't compute. The anthropologist Robin Dunar discovered humans can maintain stable social relationships with roughly 150 people at a time, which maps almost exactly onto the size of ancient hunter gatherer bands. Your brain has the social processing capacity of a small village.
But now you live in cities of millions, communicate with thousands of strangers online, and are expected to feel concern for people on continents you'll never visit. So your brain shortcuts. It creates tribes. It assigns people to in group and out group with startling speed and very little information. It feels deeply loyal to a small circle and subtly suspicious of everyone outside it. This is not racism. This is not stupidity. This is 300,000 years of tribal wiring running on hardware that was never updated. Social media has turned this into something almost pathological. Every post is a status signal. Every like is a tribal endorsement. Every comment thread is a dominance display. The same social calculus your ancestor ran in a band of 80 people is now running across a platform of 2 billion. The anxiety it produces isn't irrational. It is perfectly rational for the wrong era.
The reason you compare yourself to others isn't vanity. The reason you obsess over what people think of you isn't weakness. In a small band where reputation determined your access to food, mates, and protection, social status was survival. Your brain doesn't know that you can now buy food from a stranger who has no opinion of you whatsoever. It treats every social threat as existential because for most of human history it was the same ancient logic shapes your relationship with food. You crave sugar, fat, and salt with visceral urgency and not because you lack discipline. For 99% of human history, these things were rare and difficult to obtain. The craving system evolved in a world of scarcity. Now they're available on every corner for almost nothing. The system never got the memo. It still behaves as if a packet of biscuits is the caloric windfall that could get you through winter. This is why willpower alone is such a poor strategy for changing what you eat. You are not fighting laziness. You are fighting 300,000 years of survival programming. The system was designed to override long-term thinking in favor of immediate caloric gain. Because in the stone age, there was no long-term if you didn't eat today. By the end of a modern day, your prefrontal cortex, the slow, deliberate, rational part of your brain, is exhausted. And when it exhausts, the ancient system takes over completely.
This is why people make impulsive decisions late at night. Why willpower collapses after a long day of work? Why the most disciplined person, you know, still reaches for their phone at 11 p.m.

The ancient brain doesn't get tired in the same way. when the modern brain tires out. The ancient one steps forward. But here is what your stone age ancestors could not do. They had no concept of cognitive bias. They had no framework for understanding why they feared strangers, craved status, or felt their heart race at the sound of a snapping twig. They simply lived inside those responses driven entirely by them.
You are different. You are the first species in the history of this planet with the cognitive architecture to look at your own instincts and say, "I see you. I know what you are. I know where you came from. I know what you were designed for and I know that era is gone." The neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett's research suggests the brain is fundamentally a prediction machine. It constantly builds models of what is about to happen based on past experience, then compares incoming reality against those models. Most of what you perceive as the present is actually your brain's best guess, filled in from memory and expectation. This is why trauma echoes, why certain smells or sounds can collapse you back into a moment from years ago, why a tone of voice from a stranger can trigger the same dread you felt as a child. Your prediction system is doing exactly what it was designed to do, using the past to protect you from a future that in many cases will never arrive. But knowing this changes something. When anxiety rises for no visible reason, you know it is your brain running an old simulation.
When you feel irrational anger at someone online, you can recognize it as tribal software responding to a perceived challenge to status. When you feel the pull to check your phone for the 15th time this hour, you know it is the same reward system that once drove your ancestor to check the camp perimeter one more time before sleeping.
Understanding the wiring doesn't automatically override it, but it gives you something your ancestors never had.
