Cultural stereotypes and generalized images of national or ethnic groups often fail to capture the full complexity of individual identity, as personal experiences and inherited family values may differ significantly from societal expectations.

A story about the "Japanese woman" I'm not | Japanese Generation
Added:Maybe I'm not a Japanese woman.
I asked [music] to AI, "What is a Japanese woman?"
Quiet, gentle, puts her husband first.
Something doesn't sit right.
What is this feeling?
Friends, [music] family, maybe even my husband.
Their image of me.
Someone who says no, just like that.
My sister, 4 years older, a little quiet, maybe.
With our parents, when something's [music] hard to say, say it for me, you can.
A salesman catches my husband on the intercom.
So, I step in.
"Sorry, we are all set. Thank you."
Done.
Anyone sharper than me?
My daughter.
She cuts cleaner.
Quiet, [music] between us.
Zero.
Kawaii.
Cute.
Not a day goes by without that word.
It just comes out >> [music] >> automatic.
It's a safe word, probably.
At a cafe, the food comes out.
Kawaii.
A haircut. Kawaii.
Some character. Kawaii.
One word covers everything.
So, a kawaii person, what kind of person is that?
Can't explain it.
For me, kawaii means one thing.
My granddaughter.
That bossy husband type of marriage.
My sister, my daughter, my friends, me.
Nobody.
An image from another era.
Except my mother.
Maybe. [music] He mails the newspaper.
She's putting first for so long.
Now [music] he can't manage without her.
Putting first.
We help each other, split the jobs.
That's what matters.
This one, I can do. My daughter, too.
Good at leading the room.
No.
Not good at it.
It just happened.
Both of us, they call it HSP.
Highly sensitive.
We notice automatically.
My daughter can't pretend she didn't.
Me?
Notice same mood.
No pretending.
No off switch.
Honestly, it wears me out.
You notice everything, don't you?
[music] How do you blend?
It's just [music] the automatic kindness mood.
Me, the sports club type.
I know how to put up with things.
But, that's for the game.
Daily life, that don't carry over.
I say what I need to say.
Never carried overnight.
How it goes.
My mother and sister, >> [music] >> patient, probably.
Up to a point.
Past that point, >> [music] >> they blow up, big.
My daughter, different.
Strangely indifferent.
Every complaint goes into notes.
Dated, detailed.
Then, one day, she has the evidence.
Boom.
No one can stop her. She doesn't [music] stop.
Total victory, nothing less.
That's her goal, apparently.
A new species.
The women of this family, [music] each have our own way.
A little scary.
Maybe that's a mainstream now.
Once overseas, someone asked me, "Are there a black Japanese and white Japanese?"
Every Japanese women there are, but me, pale.
Me, never cared.
Plenty of women [music] avoids the sun. True.
Sunscreen, parasol, the full kit.
My mother, my sister never without a hat.
My daughter, the most serious.
Daily face masks, skin care, loves of it.
Against spots and wrinkles, she [music] said.
As for me, she says it's too late.
Can't do a peel, >> [music] >> natural is fine.
Spots, wrinkles, natural is fine.
Aging, no escaping that.
So, nothing Japanese women about me.
Hard to say.
Can't figure it out.
So, dinner.
Getting hot these days.
So, tonight the salad a bamboo basket.
Somehow, the table feels cooler.
Ingredients, there is something about them.
Touching them, something settles.
Nature's gift, maybe.
Come to think of it, my grandmother used to say, "Don't cook in a bad mood.
It's bad for the ingredients.
And it reaches the ones who eat, too."
It's Zen clean, quietly.
How ours?
Cooking and a bad mood just goes.
Everything is settled back into place.
Strange.
Honestly, tired days, I grab something ready-made.
But grandmother had her ways.
Move it onto a plate.
Say thank [music] you while you do.
I was about 20.
Not even married yet.
Suddenly, some years since.
Not following a rule.
Nothing like that.
Automatic mode.
Just keep doing it.
Not conscious.
What is this?
I don't know.
Always there.
That's all.
AI's image of Japanese woman doesn't fit me as expected. [music] But cooking, I noticed I've become my grandmother.
Her and still [music] me.
Something grandmother bought me.
That's enough.
In your country, images of women, images of men.
Do you have those, too?
I'd love to hear. Leave a comment.
Thank you, as always, for your support.
See you next time. [music] >> Hey.
