The spread of farming into North Africa was not simply a matter of local hunter gatherer populations independently adopting new crops and techniques they learned about through trade contact. It involved real direct population movement and genuine intermixing, actual people crossing into North Africa, likely via the Iberian Peninsula and the narrow strait, separating it from Morocco and settling among the existing indigenous population rather than simply passing through as traders. The resulting population represented a genuine genetic blend, not a story of pure cultural transmission layered onto an entirely unchanged ancestral population.
Following this Neolithic era mixing, North Africa entered a long historical period marked by contact with several major Mediterranean civilizations, each of which left a substantial cultural and historical footprint. But according to the genetic evidence currently available, comparatively limited direct genetic impact on the broader Amazig population.
Phoenician traders established coastal colonies across North Africa beginning in the second millennium B.C.E. most famously founding Carthage and Rome later governed large parts of the region for centuries as the province of Moritania.
Both civilizations left substantial linguistic, architectural, and cultural influence still visible in the historical record today.
