The summer solstice (Sunday at 12:24 AM) brings the longest day of the year with 19+ hours of daylight, creating hot conditions across Alaska with temperatures reaching 70-80°F in South Central and interior regions. These heat conditions, combined with dry air and low humidity, create elevated fire danger and thunderstorm risk, particularly in South Central and interior areas where red flag warnings are in effect. The forecast shows mostly sunny skies with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, requiring precautions like hydration, sunscreen, and fire safety measures.

HEAT AND SUN FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND
Added:That's the end.
[music] Heat.
Hey, Heat.
>> [music] >> Heat. Heat.
>> [music] >> Good afternoon everyone. It is finally Friday, the Friday right before our solstice weekend. Today's also Junth and we can look forward to Father's Day on Sunday. Now, as we get started with our extended forecast, if you ever have any questions at all throughout this live stream, please feel free to leave a comment if you're watching on YouTube or Facebook. Um, but we have a lot of heat on the way. We have some heat advisories across the state, as well as some fire danger. So, I'll get into everything you can expect for this weekend and for your solstice forecast. Starting off with our sun data. We all know that tomorrow is the longest day of the year and solstice doesn't actually happen until Sunday at 12:24 in the morning. So very very early on our Sunday. But for today, our sun sets at 11:41 in Anchorage, 12:46 in Fairbanks, 10:07 in Juno, and 12:23 in the morning in areas like Bethl. Now, for tomorrow for the longest day of the year, that's the amount of sunlight we're going to have is 19 hours 21 minutes and 27 seconds. So, that's a lot of sun, uh, a lot of daylight. And we're going to have even more of that sun to accompany that extended daylight. And that's something you can look forward to in South Central. We're going to see even more of those sunny skies, very similar to what we felt today, including very similar temperatures as well. Now, as we look across the state right now, you can see a little bit of those clouds moving in in Anchorage up on Hilltop. It looks a little bit hazy uh with a little bit of that orange glow to it. But across areas like Palmer and even in Fairbanks, uh we're seeing plenty of that sunshine. Lots of those those Toy Story clouds in Fairbanks, those cumulus clouds popping up. And in Ketchacan from at least what we can see, plenty of that sunshine. Temperatures reaching as high as the 80s in areas like Fairbanks, reaching into the 70s in Palmer. And today in Anchorage, we actually did reach about 70°.
Now, as we look over our time lapse from today, look at this plume. Look at that thunderstorm. Oh, it's so cool to see. I absolutely love watching clouds form.
And it's so cool to see kind of that anvil begin to grow as we get a little bit more of that vertical development.
That's when those cloud plumes shoot straight up vertically developing as you know, the title suggests. Now, as we look so far throughout the month, um that airport temperature recorded at about 68 degrees, but we know that other parts of Anchorage today reached into the low 70s and yesterday reaching 70° as well. So, looking into tomorrow for our Saturday, we're going to have very similar temperatures continuing on. And like I said, even more of that sunshine ahead. So, that's something that we can look forward to. Not only just the weekend ahead, but even more of that sunlight and warm temperatures. Now, with all this heat that we've been getting, it's important to know that we do have a lot of these heat advisories with hot conditions, dry conditions, and that all leads to that thunderstorm risk. Thunderstorms develop in a lot of um hot atmospheres. Now, we need a lot of moisture for thunderstorms to develop, but that's what it gets um it gets that from the ground lifting up that hot air as we get a little bit more of that sunlight. Now, elevated fire danger is still a risk with these higher temperatures into the interior.
Temperatures reaching up into the mid to even upper 80s in some areas. Um, but before we get into all of that, I want to show you those sky conditions for tomorrow across the state. Areas like Anchorage, mostly sunny skies extending all the way throughout the Kai Peninsula and even into the Matsu Valley.
Temperatures reaching 70 degrees. Now for Fairbanks, just a bit cloudier skies, mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies. temperatures reaching up into the 80s at 81° and in Juno and southeast more of that sunshine. This is also another area where we've been watching some of these heat advisories popping up. Now in areas like Bethl we actually are expecting a few of those scattered showers, light to scattered showers are expected with temperatures sitting in the mid60s.
Now so far today temperatures reaching into the 80s in the interior and for Fairbanks reaching into 73 degrees for Palmer for that high temperature. You might notice that these temperatures are very similar to what we saw on our four camera graphic. And uh we're seeing even more of these temperatures extending all the way into your Saturday. Um and down into southeast, high temperatures reached up into the 60s and even into the 70s. Um so yeah, if you're watching on YouTube or Facebook, comment, let me know where you're watching from. Thank you Arnold for watching. I'll show you that Gamble forecast coming up very soon. Thank you for tuning in. Now, as we look ahead for those overnight lows tonight, 55 degrees in Anchorage. Other parts of town will feel some cooler temperatures closer to that 50°ree threshold. But as we look into the interior, very similar temperatures are expected. The only areas where we're seeing a major difference is up into Utkyagic at 36°. But you'll notice across the rest of the state, low to mid40s reaching up into the low 50s.
Now for tomorrow with those high temperatures and those sunny skies, more of that extending through South Central.
Sunshine expected into areas like Kodiak and along the Alaska Peninsula and into Bristol Bay. That's where you're going to see a few more of those scattered showers due to a very very low uh pressure system, very weak low pressure system. Now in Juno and southeast, mostly sunshine ahead. Like I mentioned, Yakat will see a few more of those clouds begin to roll in, but temperatures reaching up into the 70s in southeast.
Now, as we look ahead, you can see all of those clear conditions extending all the way along the the Brooks Range, even into the interior. A few of those scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up along um the Alaska range and near South Central, but down into the Alaska Peninsula and into Kodiak. This is these are areas where I mentioned a little bit of those scattered showers are expected. You can see that from Bethl and into Dillingham and extending into Kodiak. Those storms are going to roll through mostly in your evening for Saturday, but we'll even see a few of those showers popping up across the interior down into South Central. You can see how spotty it is. That's all those thunderstorms. They significantly weaken and begin to dissipate as we reach the overnight hours and into the very early morning hours. And that's how you can tell that it's really thunderstorm activity, which can carry a little bit of that moisture. But otherwise, dry lightning and um heat lightning are all a factor that you should be uh paying attention to, especially now that we're in the summer season and fire danger is very, very high. Now, as we look ahead, very dry precipitation is expected. Very little amount of rain is in the forecast.
Kodiak getting up to about a tenth of an inch, even up into nearly 2/10 of an inch by the time Sunday morning rolls around. But you can see all this to show you that it's going to stay fairly dry with a lot of those thunderstorms popping up. That means fire danger is very, very high this time of year. Now, you can even see some of those scattered showers popping up in areas like Bethl, just near Bethl, uh right here, that little flare of green popping up. Uh, but you can also see the the lightning activity really picking up as we progress into this afternoon, clear into the morning, early afternoon. But then by about 3:30, that's where you can see a lot more of that lightning rolling around. Now, I know that there's a feature on here where I can zoom in and even show you what exactly that thunderstorm looks like from a 3D model.
So, I'm going to try to do that. Um, we'll see if that works out, but if not, then I can say that I tried. So, here is this. Let's see. Okay. Well, I can't get it to work. Or maybe I can.
Okay, maybe not. Anyway, you get the idea. A little thunderstorm right there popping up just north of Palmer. But I want to talk about a lot of these warnings and watches that are going on across the state. You can see how colorful our state is right now. All due to that heat and those dry conditions.
You can also see that storm that is going to bring in more of that moisture into Kodiak and the Alask and the Alaska Peninsula. That's all of this. And you can see that front attached to it, that perfect little semicolon shape. Um, but as we look ahead, we're really paying attention to these conditions. All the colors you see on the map. That's what we're going to be talking about, including all of those lightning strikes that you can see popping up. Now, first of all, starting off with South Central, we have this red flag warning in effect.
And this is going to progress all the way into your Saturday. This is all due to those dry conditions and leading into a lot of that lightning red flag warning. dry conditions and lots of fire potential. So, anytime you see that red flag warning, I know I sound like a broken record. I talk about this a lot, but that just means that if you're going to recreate with anything that could cause sparks or anything that could cause a fire, you need to be extremely careful. So, zooming in just a little bit closer, those thunderstorms are likely to develop, especially with that lightning as we get hotter and hotter throughout the day and more of that sunshine adding on to the heat that is released from the ground from Palmer northward along the Parks Highway.
That's where we're really paying attention to that and that's going to continue into the Denali Highway and the West Sitna Valley. Now, as we zoom over just a little bit more, we've got a lot of those lightning strikes near kind of where Glenn Allen is, and we're going to progress into seeing even more of that across the interior from the central to eastern interior. This is going to be in effect until from now all the way into Monday morning at 1:00 a.m. That's that red flag warning. All due to those thunderstorms and lightning that could cause fire danger. And it doesn't help that gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour. That all means it's perfect recipe for fire danger. Now, the heat advisory is also in effect. This is for the Yukon Flats. This is going to stay in effect all the way through your solstice weekend, Junth, and even for Father's Day temps reaching up to 85 degrees. Even some areas probably reaching up into the upper 80s. So, that means it's going to get hot. And I know that Alaskans and a lot of people honestly whenever we see these heat advisories after not having seen them, it's not because we've never seen these temperatures before because we all know that we've experienced temperatures like this. It just means that there's now a new threshold to let you know. Just be aware that there is very hot conditions.
So, just be sure to drink your water, wear your sunscreen if you're going outside, just take care of yourself. Um, and don't overheat, especially now that it's summer and it's perfect time to go hiking and recreate outside. Just hydrate. That's really all that a heat advisory means in simple terms. Now, everything you see highlighted in white, that is that special weather statement.
All that means is those hot temperatures and that's going to be for multiple days in a row. Now, as we look at southeast, we do have this heat advisory underway into areas like the Hannesboro as well as uh Click One. And that's going to be for temperatures in the low 80s. That's going to stay in effect for Saturday and for Saturday even down into the southern portion of southeast. Temperatures in the low 80s as well for Annette Haidider and Ketchacan. So stay hydrated, enjoy those hikes because I know it's going to be beautiful and sunny. So be sure to get outside. Just take care of yourself if you are doing so.
Now right now across Ketchacan, this is where we're seeing lots of that sunshine. I know you can't really see a whole lot of the sun, but still plenty of sun is right above those mountains.
You can even see a little bit of that peeking out. Temperatures at 64 degrees right now. And across the entire region, temperatures cooling down a little bit more in Yakat and Skagway or I'm sorry in Sitka where temperatures are reaching into the 50s. But for Skagway and Hannes, Juno reaching near 70°. Hannes is really hot, really heating it up for the region and that's where we're seeing the lead in those high temperatures.
Now, as we look ahead, this is where we're going to see even more of those clouds beginning to roll in in the early morning hours, but then quickly kind of dissipate. We're going to see plenty of that mostly sunny skies throughout your Saturday. A little bit of an increase for your Sunday morning, a little bit of those clouds, but then by the afternoon, clearing up just as fast as those clouds moved in. So, as we look ahead with that precipitation, we're really going to stay mostly dry. And that's kind of the biggest thing to know is that it's going to stay dry. It's going to stay hot.
Nothing is really changing in this forecast. And that's why those heat advisories are in effect for your Saturday. Plenty of sunshine ahead.
Temperatures reaching into the 70s, but some areas could reach up into the low 80s. So, whenever you see temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 70s, just know that some areas adjacent to where you're seeing these warm temperatures, that's where we could see temperatures into the low 80s. Now, for Juno, for your 7-day forecast, lots of sun ahead for you Saturday. We'll see an uh income of more of those clouds for Sunday morning. But again, otherwise, mostly sunny skies the rest of your Sunday. By Monday and into next week, that's when we'll see a return in some of that cloud cover as well as some of that rain shower moving in. Even temperatures dropping down into the low 60s as we progress into next week. But that's not something we have to worry about right now. We'll just talk about what you can expect for this weekend. Now for Fairbanks right now, so picturesque, sunny skies, some of those cumulus clouds popping up, and so much green in this shot. 80 degrees right now with calm winds. It's looking beautiful, but also pretty hot. Those winds not really helping to cool anything down with current temperatures across Fairbanks, reaching from the mid70s all the way into the low 80s. The warmest temperature that I can see right now, at least at 82 degrees. So, I hope you're able to kind of get a tan now that we've got more of that sunshine, more of these hot temperatures. But again, like I said, wear your sunscreen and be sure to hydrate. Current temperatures across the entire interior, mostly sunshine, but we are seeing a little bit more of those clouds in areas like Denali and even into Delta Junction. If you're watching from the interior, let me know how you're enjoying this heat. If it's sunny right now for your area, just let me know how you're enjoying it. As we look at those low temperatures for tonight, we'll reach down into the 50s. Even areas like Denali reaching into the 30s, but ultimately between the mid 40s into the low 50s is kind of that range we typically see this time of year for the uh for the entirety of the interior as we look ahead with our rainfall. Again, this is another area where fairly dry conditions are expected into the weekend. We will see an influx of a little bit more of that accumulation by Saturday evening. That is all due to those thunderstorms. So ultimately not seeing a lot of rain, but any rain you do see will come in from those thunderstorms.
As we look ahead, mostly cloudy skies are going to arrive just as early as Sunday morning. And then you can see thunderstorms popping up. That's why it's so spotty and a lot of just random little dots. That's all thunderstorms.
Nothing too organized. Uh very disruptive. So keep that in mind. And even as we progress into Sunday, more of those clouds will stay overhead. So, for tomorrow, for your Saturday, look ahead to mostly cloudy skies. We're going to see even more of these warm temperatures reaching into the low 80s and even some into the mid70s and even upper 70s. Uh, thank you, Jackie, for your kind words.
I appreciate it because you're so far away across the newsroom. But mostly cloudy skies, but calm winds. So, fairly nice weather to recreate in, but again, very hot temperatures with that heat advisory and even that red flag warning in effect. As we look ahead for the North Slope, this is where we're seeing some of those thunderstorms into uh Anatubic Pass for the afternoon.
Temperatures near 80° and then temperatures along the Buffer coastline nearly cut in half for Ukiagic at 40°.
We're going to see temperatures just a bit warmer. Look at that jump up to 62 degrees in Dead Horse when only a couple weeks ago we were still in the 20s for those highs. So it's crazy how much those temperatures can really climb for the North Slope. Otherwise, Dead Horse, you're the only area seeing mostly sunshine. Other areas from Utki over to Wayright, scattered showers, mostly cloudy skies expected with overnight lows dropping into the 30s.
Now for western Alaska, areas like Ganbul and Sabonga, this is where mostly cloudy skies are going to reside. We'll see some of those spotty showers for areas like Bethl. Even McGrath, mostly cloudy as we saw for the interior, but for uh Seward, the Seward Peninsula reaching all the way into Unillete, mostly sunshine. Temperatures near 60° for many parts across western Alaska.
But uh Kat View just a bit cooler into the upper 40s. Galina afternoon thunderstorms. As you progress a little bit closer to the interior, that's where you can expect more of those thunderstorms to begin to develop. And again, that um red flag warning is not a good sign for those dry conditions and that fire danger. So, just stay cautious and stay vigilant. If you see any fires begin to start or if you see any kind of fire, just report it and double check.
You never know what people are aware of or not. So, it's good to stay ahead of that fire activity if you're able to.
Now, for the illutian chain, this is where mostly cloudy skies are underway starting off your weekend. Temperatures reaching into the 50s along the central into uh areas up the Alaska Peninsula.
Temperatures even reaching into near 50 degrees in St. Paul as well. Scattered showers in areas like Dillingham. Now, for the next seven days across Fairbanks, really the biggest thing, afternoon thunderstorms as we get more of that heat and mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. You're going to see some of those showers likely in the afternoon with those thunderstorms. And you can even see these temperatures really tapering off as we progress into next week, reaching into the 80s for your weekend and then gradually getting down into the low 70s.
Now, for those of you in South Central who have been so patient uh to watch uh all the way through this, we're looking ahead to a little bit more of those afternoon thunderstorms. You can even see mostly out in the distance those cumulo nimbus clouds. And that's really what thunderstorms are. They pretty much reside in those cumulo nimbuses.
Temperatures right now at 67 degrees right now across Anchorage. Temperatures ranging from the mid60s into the mid70s at Campbell Creek where we typically see much warmer temperatures than the rest of town and even nearly nearly 10 degrees warmer at Campbell Creek than at the airport where those temperatures are recorded at 67°.
Now those current conditions across South Central mostly sunny spanning from Kenai into Seward even Portage Glacia where we see a lot of these mostly cloudy skies those sun sunny rays beaming down even into the Matsu Valley.
Lots of that sunshine. Now we are seeing a little bit more of those clouds developing in Anchorage. But if you were to look outside you would still see plenty of sun. I think it's recording some of those cirrus clouds and cirratus clouds that we're seeing way up in the upper levels of the atmosphere. That's essentially just a lot of ice particles up in the sky. Now, as we look at our satellite and radar, look at all of that lightning beginning to flare up just north of Palmer. So much of that lightning. That's so crazy to see. I don't know. It's just very exciting to see lots of lightning. That just shows how hot it is across our uh region. And even some of these spots flaring up with a little bit of yellow and even some red um on our radar just near Chicaloon.
That's where you can see a lot of that heavy rain beaming up. Now, for the rest of this the Kai Peninsula, if I can not get distracted by lightning, this is where a lot of those sunny skies are shining bright. You can even uh it's even reflected in our satellite and radar. Just clear skies, very little clouds overhead. Now, as we look ahead with all the precipitation we've got as of 24 hours ago, it is just dry and it is just hot. Now, areas where you're seeing highlights of green, that doesn't always indicate rainfall. Uh but where you do see it, it is all along higher elevation regions just along the Chugat range, the Alaska range, even into the Kenai Mountains. But otherwise, mostly dry. Nothing really reported anywhere at any of our weather stations. But as we look ahead for tomorrow with that rainfall, any areas that might get a little bit of that rain are just those areas prone to thunderstorms such as closer to the interior like Taleta, even into Glenn Allen, these are two areas where afternoon thunderstorms are likely. But we do have a storm that is going to roll in by Sunday. Not only bringing in just a little bit of that rain for areas like Seward, but also mostly cloudy skies. So, soak in that sun while you can for your Saturday because by Sunday, mostly cloudy skies are ahead. As we look ahead, dry conditions, but we'll see some of those thunderstorms popping up throughout the day. Again, that's mostly expected for the Alaska range into the interior. Not so much for South Central, but it is still a possibility with our precipitation chances.
Thunderstorm activity most likely from Friday into Saturday. But then by Sunday, it does begin to climb just a little bit more, especially by Wednesday where rain showers are as of right now in the forecast. But we'll keep paying attention to that since it can change that far out in advance. wind gusts and wind forecast. Nothing too significant, but areas within the Matsu Valley, that's where that red flag warning is in effect. And that's where we could see some stronger wind gusts reaching up to about 20 to 30 mph winds across South Central. Partly sunny skies spanning from Homer into Seward. Mostly sunshine from Kai into Satna.
Temperatures reaching in the low to mid60s for most of these areas, but Seward at 57° and Kodiak just a little bit warmer at 58 degrees. Scattered showers already kicking off the weekend into Portage Glacier. This is where temperatures reach or I'm sorry into Whittier. And for Portage Glacier as well, mostly sunshine, temperatures reaching into the low 60s for Prince William Sound and the Copper River Basin. Mostly cloudy skies, but you will see a little bit of a break allowing for some of that sunshine. Temperatures reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s for Taletina all the way down into Wasilla and Palmer. All of that red is that red flag warning. remaining in effect as we kick off the weekend.
Temperatures in the mid to low 70s. So very, very hot. We'll see more thunderstorm activities beginning to build by the evening. And for Anchorage, mostly sunshine, calm winds with temperatures near 70°. Again, very similar to what you saw today in Anchorage. Just kind of a copy and paste as to these temperatures and sky conditions from today. For the next seven days, sunshine ahead for your Saturday. Again, remember, tomorrow is the longest day of the year in terms of that sunlight. So, be sure to get outside and soak it all in while you can. We'll see return in cloud cover by Sunday, just in time for Father's Day.
But Sunday is the official summer solstice happening at 12:24 in the morning. And I know a lot of you are already going to be out for your Saturday. So, you could probably stay up, I'm sure, for solstice to happen.
That's the whole point. But as we reach into next week, mostly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching down into the 60s as we progress with that chance of rain by the time Wednesday rolls around. So, that's what you can expect for this weekend. If you have uh any questions about your forecast, please let me know.
And I'm going to send it over to a commercial break and then after that, 247 weather just in case you missed anything. So, uh happy Friday. Thank you for commenting uh in Point Hope. Hope you're able to enjoy the rest of your Friday and go outside, enjoy your Saturday and the longest day of the year. I'll be right here. If you have any more questions, feel free to leave a comment in Facebook or YouTube.
Otherwise, I'm going to send it over to break and then 247 weather.
into the weekend. The exception would be it might be very hot into the southern areas of the panhandle and the northern sections of the panhandle. So, sunshine all around. Sunscreen weather for sure for for some Alaskans back into the Kenai Peninsula. Highs mostly into the 60s. We'll still see some sunshine and blue sky. It'll be nice around Prince William Sound. The valleys will be heating up and this is where that red flag conditions you need to be mindful of. 70 for the Anchorage area and 71 in Gerwood. And you can see those 70s and 80s in Fairbanks, 80s the next couple of days with those thunderstorms popping up into the afternoon, the Anchorage area going through the weekend. We're looking good too. Uh a possibility of hitting that 70°ree mark all the way into Monday. Uh, happy Father's Day out there to those dads as well as the summer solstice simultaneously. This time lapse showing our early morning hours. Blue sky as we went through the day. The temperatures heating up and they continue to be warm.
We're also seeing some thunderstorm development that just near the Palmer Wasilla area. Now, we'll get to our satellite and radar imagery. We do have the lightning firing up again. So, convective activity, thunderstorms still possible into the western interior, south central interior, and even uh seeing some of those higher temperatures filter into parts of the panhandle. But it is that lightning activity that is coming on top of a weekend that is holding some sunshine. So, uh have that fun, but also use a lot of caution out there. There is this red flag warning that will go through today, likely to be issued again tomorrow uh for mo much of the interior. Uh watching for the combination of low humidity, some winds popping up and then of course that high heat. This is into the Copper River Basin. You can still see that there's some lightning there. Yukon Flats, you'll see some strong uh heat, an advisory in fact, is uh in place for temperatures up to 85 degrees. and then into the central to eastern interior.
Again, red flag warning conditions as those thunderstorms pick up. Hot temperatures are also expected in this area in white that goes from the interior all the way to the eastern border with multiple days of temperatures expected to hit 80 if not above. And those warm readings that temperatures into the low 80s will also impact the northern portion of the panhandle, the Hannesboro and Kuckwan area and then also southern areas of the panhandle around Haidider Annette as well as Ketchacan. So heat advisories even for panhandle locations. These are the daytime high temperatures. It made it to 80° in Fairbanks. Right on what we thought would happen there. 70s as far north as Coldfoot, 65 for Dead Horse, 70s showing up in Skagway, Juno, and we're seeing temperatures into the upper 60s around Anchorage, but 70s just to our north and east around Taletina and Glenn Allen. They have been very warm as the afternoon ensued, which will be the case again tomorrow. Thunderstorms, afternoon showers picking up. Then we see some nice conditions overnight again into the early part of our Sunday. Uh thunderstorms again a possibility a little less so uh by Monday because another area of low pressure is slowly pushing closer. But tomorrow across the state we're still looking at temperatures into the 50s and 60s out of the west. Interior locations we'll see 70s and even 80s more 60s out of Dead Horse. Panhandle you're going to continue to see some pretty nice weather going into the weekend. The exception would be it might be very hot into the southern areas of the panhandle and the northern sections of the panhandle. So sunshine all around.
