ble to rebuild. You see, it's not a quick overnight thing. This is years in the making of a recovery.
>> And when you have a tornado like that, it was on the ground for 40 plus miles.
We were actually tracking it. That's in our sister station's viewing area. We tracked it live here on News9. It was a tornado emergency. It was hitting it dark. Um, two fatalities, but so many homes and businesses that were damaged.
And then unfortunately, what you hate to see is the red tape that it takes to have folks get back on their >> small community too where everyone really depends on each other. Talk about life interrupted in a moment.
>> Yes. Yeah. Two years later and they're still rebuilding that, you know, hasn't even got to get started in some places.
So hopefully they can get that all resolved. But man, weather can get crazy.
>> I remember the video of that tornado because it was at night.
>> It was, >> which is so terrifying. And just the illuminating it. You saw how big. You're right.
>> Yeah. And it was on the ground for so very long, which did give advanced warning for folks in Barnesville, but that was headed up towards Bartlesville before it finally lifted. So that was a big tornado. And those anniversaries, man, you can go through about every day in May, unfortunately, and find those.
So, two years ago was the Barnstall tornado. Now, we're talking temperatures way too cold to be dealing with severe weather. In fact, we have a chance for snowflakes in our panhandle later today.
Big snow has been going ongoing and occurring over the past really 30 hours or so back into Colorado and New Mexico.
And as a result of the cold front yesterday, it's now pushed down to Texas. These are your temperatures, Oklahoma, as you are heading out. lower mid40s, some 30s out in our panhandle where it's much, much colder. And there's the storm that's driving it, a surface low driving all the precept. The problem is we have such low humidity after that cold front moved through.
We've got clouds streaming up overhead, but that moisture just can't make it to the ground. So, our rain chances are pretty minimal. Meanwhile, they are getting some good moisture in the mountains back to the west. Over 14 inches of snow just in the last 24 hours up near Estus Park. Some areas on the mountain peaks will end up with 30 inches of snow by the time this is all said and done. Still tracking a little light snow. This is far southeast Colorado. Here's our panhandle. We don't have any snow in our panhandle, but a few sprinkles. Very light rain, dry in Oklahoma City. And on radar, you can see moisture starting to kind of increase.
We might end up saturating and getting a few sprinkles down to the southeast. But I'm telling you, it is spotty. And right now, it is light. Cloudy skies right now on our Lucky Star Sky Cam network. The sun is up. It is 48 degrees and it's down to 47 in El Reno, 45 out in in Celing, 47 in Pona City, some 50s down into southern Oklahoma. Really the big thing that you notice is that north wind that's still gusty this morning. 15 to 25 miles per hour. So it feels like the upper 30s and low 40s. Grab the jacket.
It will not be as chilly this afternoon as what we had yesterday. At least for central and southern Oklahoma, you'll have 60s, but I do think you stay quite a bit colder in the northwest. You'll hold on to more cloud cover throughout the afternoon. Winds right now, again, 15 to 25. And as you're planning out your day, temps go from these 40s to the low 60s with a very slight chance of a shower into the afternoon. It could saturate down in the southeast. A higher chance. And again, a few flakes of snow possible in our panhandle. Tonight is the night. It's going to be the coldest of the next nine. 42 in Oklahoma City.
Close to the record cold. We're not breaking that record, I don't think. We will see lower mid30s though in northwest Oklahoma with the possibility of a light freeze out near Buffalo, possibly down to our net and lowlying areas. This zone in pink is the chance for frost. So, we went from tornado zones and hail zones to freeze and frost zones back in the state. And that's what can happen when you get the clash of the seasons over Oklahoma. Now, tomorrow it's all gone. We're in the 70s. We're back to average temperatures for May.
Thursday is quiet and dry. But as these weak storms start to line back up over the Pacific, we start to get more progression in the jetream level and amplification, what that does is brings more Gulf moisture back in. Right now, we are lacking in Gulf moisture. No humidity. That thick Gulf air is all the way down to Austin, Texas, but that starts to surge back by tomorrow afternoon and Friday. Friday, it's hot.
We're trying to get the humidity back.
We'll be in the 80s, even some 90s back to the west and unstable enough for a couple of storms to take off. Higher chance Friday afternoon and evening will be in the northeast. It's not locked in, but a low threat for severe storms. Now for your big weekend, so much going on on Saturday and I do think it is hot.
90s with the chance for a few storms to billow on up in the afternoon. Not everyone sees those. That's why that chance is still in the slight category.
Higher chance of storms will be Saturday night into Sunday along a pretty strong cold front that moves in. Now, it is May, so these storms, if they develop, will have the chance to be severe into the afternoon. We'll watch them overnight. Trackers will be ready. The weather team will be here if needed.
Don't cancel outdoor plans as of right now. And we'll update you as the system gets closer because storms could bring wind and hail. Overall, a very low tornado risk. It's not a classic tornado setup this weekend, but it's something to watch. We've been telling you about it. Then it turns cooler. Still nice though. Sunday, it's just not in the 90s. 79. Record-breaking heat tries to return next week. and I'll send it back to YouTube.
