Ground-level ozone forms when air pollutants undergo chemical reactions under strong sunlight and low wind conditions, creating hazardous air quality that can worsen respiratory symptoms; this phenomenon occurs when stagnant air prevents pollutant dispersion, making sunny, calm days particularly dangerous for outdoor activities.

San Antonio area braces for hotter temperatures and gusty windsAdded:
And now, First Warning Weather with Meteorologist Brand Souders.
Good morning, everybody. Here we are looking at our first ozone action day in quite some time. This is because, well, there's a whole heck of a lot of sunshine and not a lot of wind. And that can take any air pollutants that build up and cause a chemical reaction that develops ozone at ground level. And that's harmful for breathing. So, respiratory illness people, you need to limit your exposure outside today cuz it can make some of your symptoms worse.
Yeah, it becomes almost an allergy for you.
Clouds. Yeah, no clouds. So, that's one reason why it's full-on sun today and no wind. So, wind less than 5 mph. Very little. You probably won't notice any breeze whatsoever. Even though as you're outside, you'll probably want one cuz it's up near 90. We'll have the temperature near 90 again for tomorrow and for Friday and for Saturday and dry.
Sunday, small chance of rain coming into the forecast at 30%. It's a better chance of rain Monday and Tuesday of next week as we get our highs still in the upper 80s, but rain chances may help us cool down a little bit once it does rain if it rains. No rain around here right now, though. In fact, there is a system coming onshore. The Pacific Northwest getting some wet weather. Highs across Texas today from about 90 in Brownsville to Houston to Dallas to here in San Angelo. Everybody coming in close to the same.
Little hotter around Amarillo today at 95° tonight. We'll see our lows down into the 60s once again. So, not too mild.
We've got a nice separation between the high and the low. That means our air is fairly dry. Not a whole heck of a lot of humidity in the air. And we'll continue to see that into our daytime tomorrow at 90°. Now, I think today is probably the only day with the air quality alert with the breeze that picks on up. You're not going to have that as you can bring in some fresh air beginning tomorrow and Friday. Staying dry the rest of the week. Just want to try to stay cool and then we'll watch and see maybe Sunday evening a chance for some rain, but the better chance comes in early next week, the first couple weekdays. Okay, that's what's happening.
Thanks for watching.
