H. pylori bacteria survive in the stomach by producing urease enzyme, which breaks down urea from consumed proteins into alkaline ammonia; this creates a protective cloud that neutralizes stomach acid, allowing the bacteria to replicate and penetrate deeper into the mucus layer for enhanced protection.

How H. pylori May Survive by Producing a Urease EnzymeAdded:
So, the way that they survive is they have the ability to create this urease enzyme. And so, urea in the stomach that comes from proteins that we consume, they have the ability to use this enzyme to break that down and turn it into ammonia, which is very alkaline. So, this alkaline ammonia then kind of works like this little protective cloud around them. So, this protective cloud is meant for that organism, but as they replicate and start to multiply, now we're really starting to alkalize and neutralize the stomach acid in the stomach. And that all gives them time to kind of dig down into that mucus layer where they can be more protected.
