A simple gravity-fed drip irrigation system can be created using a 5-gallon bucket elevated on cinder blocks, a garden hose, and a ball valve, with holes drilled along the hose to deliver water directly to plant bases; this method works effectively for garden plants like tomatoes when the water source is positioned higher than the plants, allowing water to flow naturally through the system.

The Ugliest Trellis, Drip Line Setup, The Bigger Ditch Garden本站添加:
And here is my bigger ditch garden.
I'll show you what I've done here.
So, this big as someone called it once, the ugliest trellis I've ever seen.
On this one here, I've got pole beans in there.
The Violetto and I put in some uh Ashley cucumber seedlings.
Just uh just to mix them in and >> [snorts] >> trying to save space, right?
So, that's what I've got here on this trellis.
And this trellis here, I call it my string trellis.
This is where my tomatoes are going to go.
And I did transplant some achocha.
Some of you know what that is and that I grow it just about every year.
So, so last year we had a drought >> [clears throat] >> and I thought I had amended this area enough.
But with the drought and uh the newly dug garden area, um I just kept having to water and water and water.
So, last fall, I amended this I amended this area here very heavily.
And then I put some more in this year. I I've We've a horrible, horrible mess here, folks.
So, >> [snorts] >> this here is where I'm going to put my my tomatoes.
So, it should work pretty good.
Well, I'm going to put some of my tomatoes here. The holes are already amended, everything. I'm just waiting for warmer temperatures to transplant these tomatoes here.
We'll go here.
Now, this is my drip irrigation. It's just a 5-gallon bucket. I've got an old garden hose.
I've got a a ball valve there.
>> [snorts] >> And it's up two cinder blocks high.
And what I'll do after I transplant my tomatoes, I'll come through with a 1/16 in drill bit.
And where the hose, cuz I'll line the hose up, where the hose is by each tomato plant, I'll put one or two one or two holes from here.
Now, I'm curious how long it'll take to drain a 5-gallon bucket with 15 15 holes on a 50-ft trellis.
>> [snorts] >> We don't know. We're going to find out.
Now, >> [snorts] >> for those of you who know about water and water flow and gravity feed, this hose here, I could have crimped it off, put a plug on it.
But, all you got to do is run it up higher.
See, there's no there's no cap on that end.
All you've got to do is have the end higher than the water source, which is that's plenty. But I made it long enough so I can just so it'll reach that top one, I can tie it off.
So, it should work pretty good.
But we'll see. We'll see.
Stay tuned.
So, the plants in the the greenhouse are doing exceptionally well.
Or the cold frame, whatever you want to call that.
Now, here I'm going to be growing squash, and I'm going to be growing buttercup squash. So, I just set my my little cold frame greenhouse shelter over this squash hole and this squash hole.
Just to warm it up, I had some squash that sprouted.
Those aren't looking as good as these here.
>> [snorts] >> And those don't look the best.
But when I was potting my my seedlings, I potting them.
Um >> [sighs and snorts] >> apparently there was some squash in that compost.
And they just uh growing one day, and I'm like, "Well, all I grow is is pretty much basically buttercup squash.
Um I'll just transplant them."
So, that's what those are there for.
And over here, I'll have two more squash plants.
Now, [snorts] here I've got them all.
I've got a pile of what [snorts] Shay calls farm dirt, which she brought down, mixed with my my my bathroom compost.
That had this here that I put in here is 4 years old. And so, that's good That's good soil amending there.
And over here is just a pile of leaves that I'm just going to use to mulch around some plants.
So, >> [snorts] >> got a lot of work left to do. I got a lot of pick up left to do.
And 36° this morning um at 5:00 and I had a frost at my place, but I'm coming uphill and this ditch garden and my garden by the house and even the small one across the road did not get hit with the frost. It was just right next to the bog.
So, I don't think I'll transplant my tomatoes, peppers, anything until uh next week.
I'm in no hurry. They're looking pretty good up there in that spot and the ones inside my house are looking pretty good.
So, there it is. That's what's happening.
