Sketching at the market-theme restaurant Marché

[00:00:00]So the other day while sketching here with my friends, I remembered there is this restaurant Mache with market like ambience. So today I want to show you guys around, show you what's inside, have lunch, and make a sketch. All right, let's head in.

[00:00:42]So, I have with me a portrait sketchbook today. And this is going to be a problem because it's going to open up to an A4 size canvas. And the scene in front of me is actually a white scene. So, I'm not sure how I'm going to pick up the scene later in the sketchbook. Maybe I shall have a walk around and see if there are other spots that I can sketch. So, this is the pizza store. I love their pizza.

[00:01:18]It's nice. You can see there aren't many chefs today because, well, it's not the busy hour. These are all very sketchable.

[00:01:31]I think most people would describe the food here as delicious, but uh for sketchers, it's very sketchable. I shall probably eat the rosty. So, the plain rosty is $13.90 in Singapore currency and the beef sausage is $8.90.

[00:01:52]Oh, they actually have a lunch set.

[00:01:57]I can probably stand in front of each store to draw if I want to.

[00:02:03]Like seriously, everything is very sketchable.

[00:02:09]And look at the beautiful colors.

[00:02:13]Tomatoes, the violets.

[00:02:17]Lunch is cooking.

[00:02:42]So, as you can see, this is a really beautiful restaurant. Like, I can sketch at any spot.

[00:03:27]And this is my cozy corner. So this is my lunch rosty with some pork soup. So the main reason why I'm here today is actually to sketch this place and to show you guys around. I just look at the menu behind and realized that they actually sell coffee. So, I probably should have eaten somewhere else and just come here for coffee, you know, just to save some money. I'm not going to sketch my food because I want to eat this pot, but I will take a photo and maybe sketch this at home. All right, lunch is done. Time to sketch.

[00:04:16]I'm really full right now, so I probably can even skip dinner because that's a lot of food.

[00:04:26]The pen that I'm using today is the Pelican M200. One of my favorite fountain pens that I have not used for a very long time. Be careful when you are using watercolor on wooden table because if the watercolor stains the table, the watercolor cannot be removed. So this is the scene that I'm going to sketch this store and whoops the people sitted at the right side. I also want to sketch the plantage. This is a complicated scene. So, I'm going to use pencil to mark out the composition. First, I'm going to have the foot stall here, the walkway here, the the wooden peeler here.

[00:05:12]So, I'm going to draw everything a bit smaller than usual so that I can fit everything just in case.

[00:06:09]The ink that I have in this pen is red ochre.

[00:06:14]And this should tilt up, comes down like this.

[00:06:19]I'm going to draw this as fast as possible because I don't want to, how do I say? Um, I don't want to use up too much memory on my phone to record this video.

[00:07:43]So as you're sketching try to use alignment techniques like for example this is one/ird of the shelf and half of the shelf here is filled with vegetables.

[00:08:01]These are laid vegetables. There is a rectangular sign here.

[00:08:10]There is what's this? There is a stand here that holds up the plastic shoe.

[00:08:19]Here so that when people talk the saliva will not, you know, hit the hit the vegetables.

[00:08:37]When drawing a complicated scene like this, sometimes it's good to slow down because when you slow down, you will make less mistakes.

[00:08:47]>> And when you make less mistakes, um, you can actually draw faster.

[00:08:57]I'm not sure if I have the white brush with me because there are big uh, white letters here.

[00:09:16]I think I came at a good time because uh there just there are just no people around.

[00:09:24]Oh. Oh, speaking of people, it would be good to add some people in your scene so that your scene can look uh lively.

[00:09:48]I am not sure whether I will be able to complete of painting this sketch later because there are too many things to paint.

[00:10:03]So notice I draw the big shapes first and then draw the details.

[00:10:07]Once you have the big shapes, you can fill in the details more easily.

[00:10:29]Wow, there are several bowls.

[00:10:33]Okay. Uh, as I'm drawing this, I I know I'm probably not going to be able to finish painting some details in the background plates.

[00:11:02]>> If you are not confident, uh, sorry. If you are very self-conscious about people looking at sketch, choose a spot where there is a wall behind you.

[00:11:18]So, I'm going to draw the bowls, but I'm not going to draw the the foots on the bowl so that I can paint them later. And by not drawing the fruits, I save time because this is a detailed scene. I want to save some time.

[00:11:44]The tilt cut will end here. I'm aligning this point to the vegetables here.

[00:11:54]And at the Okay, there is a person here, but the person has left. So, I'll wait for the person to come back again.

[00:12:04]This is the noodle making store. Pasta making store.

[00:12:22]I'm not sure when the person will come back to work on the noodles, but it would be good to draw the person working on the person is back to work on the noodles.

[00:19:02]Yeah. So, this is the table which should be which should actually be horizontal but um yeah, perspective issues.

[00:20:07]I'm not sure how I'm going to paint this later. This is Oh, wow. This is crazy.

[00:20:14]Let's draw the tables. There are two tables. One here and one here.

[00:20:22]Thankfully, occupied by people now, so I can draw people. So, for the chairs here, I'm just going to use sticks, simple lines to draw them.

[00:20:37]And there is this thing that goes across.

[00:20:42]Oh, I see some lanterns as well.

[00:20:47]So, I'm going to hang one lantern here.

[00:20:52]Another lantern here.

[00:20:59]So when drawing the floor tiles, uh, draw them smaller when they are further away. Draw them bigger when they are closer to you.

[00:21:11]There is perspective. Things that are closer to you are going to appear bigger. Things that are further away are going to appear smaller.

[00:21:22]And when you are drawing the floor towels, the granite towels, try to observe how the lines move so they can draw them more accurately.

[00:21:34]Okay, I've just moved to the table beside me, this table to sketch because it's brighter here. At least I can see what's going on.

[00:21:46]Let me tilt the paper slightly so that the water can drip down.

[00:21:58]>> I can see the the chairs are off brown ochre.

[00:22:12]The grout for the concrete is yellow ochre as well.

[00:22:42]So, this is what I have so far. The paint is not dry yet. I wish I could make certain areas darker, but I don't have the high tinting paints to do that. For that, I usually I mean, for the darker colors, I usually use coin kryon uh phthalo to get the blacks, but this is not that black. I have to rush off to work. So, I'm just going to keep my sketchbook open like this until I'm back home. And now it's the next day. So, I'm looking at the sketch, looking at where I should paint with white. So, it turned out I didn't really need to have dinner yesterday because I ate too much from the late lunch. So, I need to add some white here. Maybe white for the lights and for the lights here.

[00:23:36]The exterior. This is the Kuretake Zig cartoonist white brush pen. And now the brush tip has dried after several weeks of usage. All right, let's paint.

[00:23:52]So, this board is actually black, but there's light shining on it. So this shape or this value actually looks fine, but you can see the contrast here with white against the light value is not that great.

[00:24:10]Okay, I need to twist this again.

[00:24:14]That's right at the top.

[00:24:19]The nice thing about this versus the white gel pen is you can squeeze ink out. Whereas for the white gel pen, sometimes it may not roll that nicely.

[00:24:35]Okay, looks nice with the reverse with the negative. So, we have the lights here. One, two, three. Maybe another one here. Um, here.

[00:24:47]Here. Maybe here some highlights for the vegetables or maybe some lights here.

[00:24:59]So just depths of white just to add some highlights. And there's this thing here. So let's just add some details.

[00:25:14]There are probably areas where I can add more details.

[00:25:18]But I shall just leave this as it is.

[00:25:24]Okay. So, let's zoom in and have a look.

[00:25:30]So, this is the most challenging part here with the hood for the smoke. And we have the person, the chef who is actually holding onto noodles. But you can't see because it's blocked by this thing here, which I didn't draw that well. Some vegetables.

[00:25:50]I'm not sure what this violet uh or reddish vegetable is.

[00:25:58]Some salad here at the top. You can see the shadow for the tray holder. The light is coming from the top. So, there's some shadow here. Um, this part here should be much darker. Uh you can see the paint flow down like this in this direction. U there was a lot of water.

[00:26:21]So I was holding my sketchbook. Uh it's open and I was walking to the train station. So the water probably just float down like that. And it's fine because it's a sketchbook.

[00:26:33]Um the granite or floor tiles here, the perspective does not look right because I was actually drawing from what I think the towels should look. But I believe this should be even more compressed to make the perspective look uh more accurate. So here you can see the slabs are much bigger and here is smaller and should be much smaller and smaller smaller as they move into the background.

[00:27:03]I did not draw the people too, how should I say, too in great detail. The ships may be a bit wrong, but at a glance, you can tell that they are people. So, I guess that's fine. That works.

[00:27:15]I like I like the red splashes of colors here. And for the lanterns here, here.

[00:27:22]So, when you have something like this, uh it's a repeating pattern. So you know that this place uh has some pattern, some design going on. This is also a pattern. It's also a design. This part here uh which is under the shelf, it should be darker because it's well under the shelf.

[00:27:42]Um and this whole area actually this whole part at the top should be much darker. If this is much darker, it would actually make the bottom part here brighter just by contrast. But with the colors that I have, um, ceruan blue, ultramarine, uh, one violet, warm red, and a yellow, I wasn't able to get that really dark color. I think this is probably the darkest color that I can get. And this is from concentrated ultra marine here as well. You can see the color blend into the to the the wooden uh peeler here. So you can see this gel pen. It just does not want to roll well sometimes.

[00:28:34]Okay. So this is the completed sketch.

[00:28:38]If you look closely, you can definitely see several mistakes. For example, this hat should not look like this. Uh the hair should be, you know, darker and the shoes should be darker as well.

[00:28:54]This is the completed sketch and I'm actually quite pleased with this and I shall go back to this restaurant again some other day. Not to eat but just to have coffee. Maybe I shall sit at the table here just to sketch another store.
