More clouds with isolated strong to severe showers this afternoon

[00:00:00]Now, let's get to everything Memorial Day starting with your weather. I know we're all curious about what it's going to be like. We've had some rainy days lately. Chesley McNeal joining me now.

[00:00:10]Hey, Chesley. So, what do we have on tap?

[00:00:13]>> same old, same old. Yeah, more of the showers and thunderstorms will be popping up in the forecast area, especially once we get to the afternoon and each and every afternoon after that.

[00:00:21]So, through the weekend, this is what we're going to be dealing with. These are leftovers, if you will, that's out there right now. We do have the clouds in place. There are some breaks in the clouds, a few breaks allowing that temperature to heat up. Like you see the upper 70s down toward the south and east of the city. In fact, in the city we have 75° right now. You're looking at 77° over into down toward Thomaston. You got 70s all throughout the south or southern southern towns. Up to the north you got temperatures in the 60s. Very muggy out there with all that moisture in the atmosphere. We're in the soup, as I like to call it, thanks to that front that was pushing into the area. It has moved through, but just to the south of us it has begun to stall. So, with that stationary boundary there, that's going to be the trigger for more of those thunderstorms. You get little waves riding along that boundary, like that area of low pressure that you see there.

[00:01:03]We call them short waves. They move through and you get the chance for these showers. Because of that and where that is, the Storm Prediction Center now has placed a slight risk for uh not slight risk, but a marginal risk for severe weather over parts of our area for today and tomorrow. I'll show you that in just a bit. Right now, you're looking at the temperature percentages fluctuating uh as far as how much rain we'll receive or the area of coverage we'll receive.

[00:01:24]You're looking at Saturday at 60% chance, 50% chance on Sunday, uh Monday 60% chance. What does that mean? It's going to rain. That's it. It's going to rain, folks. It's likely that you'll see it. This is an update from the Storm Prediction Center. They only had the northeastern corner of the state in this uh marginal risk. Now, they filled out the whole area to the north of us. And so, that's a level one threat, which just means isolated strong severe thunderstorms are possible in that dark green shaded area there. I'd say in and around that area. So, Atlanta, even though it's not included in the green, uh still has a chance to see some gusty winds from some of these thunderstorms that will form. It expands on Saturday, so now includes Atlanta over toward Augusta down through Macon. Again, isolated, not very widespread or everyone receiving these severe thunderstorms.

[00:02:10]Maybe a few of us, that's about it. The rare the the main threat is going to be the rain. That rain could lead to flooding. We saw that already on Wednesday, and that could be the same case, especially for urban areas where it's a little bit more susceptible. And then, the gusty winds that could be associated with it, damaging winds certainly possible with some of those thunderstorms that will push through.

[00:02:27]So, it's a weekend where I know you're going to have fun. I know you're going to be out and about, Big Time Jazz Fest going on, but play close attention to the skies, folks. Scattered showers will start to develop mainly during the afternoons through the overnight, and then they'll subside, and then we'll do it all over again. It's It's going to be a rinse and repeat. Saturday, same.

[00:02:46]Sunday, same. We start off with the clouds, and then the afternoon, scattered showers pop up. So, that's going to be your forecast, folks, unfortunately. And it's going to carry us into next week. In fact, all of next week will keep the threat for an isolated shower or thunderstorm mainly during the afternoons, and the temperatures remain in the 80s, so warm, to say the least. Chesley, let me ask you. So, Saturday, I know a lot of events are going on in the metro specifically. So, when this rain comes, I mean, is it take cover for a little bit, or is it going to be pretty consistent?

[00:03:14]>> say you this. If you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. Even if it's not raining over you and the sun is out. If you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. So, if you hear it, time to go.

[00:03:23]>> Is this something where these events might cancel, you know, shows going on?

[00:03:27]>> The The Jazz Fest won't. Unless there's lightning right there in the vicinity.

[00:03:31]They want to protect their artists, that kind of thing. We got some baseball in town as well, Braves in town. They will clear the stadium or tell you to take shelter where you can. So, it's always best to play it safe. Always best to play it safe.
