His armies defeated Darius III, burned the magnificent ceremonial capital of Persepolis to the ground, and brought the Achaemenid dynasty to an end. For a time, Hellenistic culture spread [music] Yet, Persian resilience proved stronger.

[00:01:34]Within generations, the Parthian Empire rose in the 3rd century BCE, pushing back against Roman [music] expansion and reviving Iranian traditions. This was followed by the Sasanid Empire in 224 [music] CE, which restored Persian power, clashed repeatedly with Rome and Byzantium, and established Zoroastrianism as the state religion while advancing art, science, and [music] administration.

[00:02:04]The next great shock [music] came in the 7th century CE. Exhausted from decades of war with Byzantium, the Sassanid Empire fell to the rapid expansion of Arab Muslim armies following the death of Prophet Muhammad. By 651 [music] CE, the last Sassanid king was defeated and Islam spread across Persia.

[00:02:24]Cities were conquered, Zoroastrian temples were challenged, and Arabic became the language [music] of administration and religion. But the Persians did not vanish.

By the 18th century, [music] internal weaknesses allowed an Afghan invasion to topple the Safavids in 1722, [music] leading to chaos and the brief Hotaki dynasty. But native Persian dynasties soon reclaimed power, first under Nader Shah, who built a short-lived empire stretching into India, and later the Zand and Qajar dynasties.

The Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1911 showed the Iranian people's desire for modern governance, even amid foreign meddling. The 20th century tested Iran [music] once more.
