Political parties that adopt extreme ideological positions risk alienating moderate and independent voters who determine elections, as demonstrated by the 2024 election results where voters supported moderate Democrats in key races while still voting Republican at the top, suggesting that moving further left could lead to significant electoral losses.

Bill Maher BLASTS Zohran Mamdani’s Socialist IdeasAdded:
Who's the most popular politician on the left?
AOC? One of, but who who's You know, Bernie Bernie is Bernie yeah Bernie is I mean he's not he's a he's not a capitalist. No, he's not and he's also not president.
>> He's not he's but but neither is Mondani.
No, but he will trust me he will be featured in the campaign commercial.
>> They're going to feature people they boogeyman everybody.
>> Yeah, but you don't have to boogeyman him. And then the other side you have the guy running in New York, Mondani.
Right? Okay, who's like a straight-up communist.
I mean he is. He's talks about, you know, the things that communists Bill Maher has been going after Mondani again and this time he is tearing apart what he calls Mondani's socialist dream plans. And finally New Rule Democrats must recognize that Zephyr Teachout Mondani is the future of the party.
Unfortunately, it's the Republican party.
Get it?
And if you missed his victory speech in last week's mayoral election in New York, don't worry you'll see it in every attack ad for the next 2 years. In a brutal series of clips from Real Time, Bill Maher went after Mondani's ideas about free grocery stores, free buses, and free schools and the whole thing turned into a complete political bloodbath. Maher's criticism came fast, sharp, and completely unforgiving.
>> [music] >> He mocked the plans as unrealistic and disconnected from how the real world works. So, hit that subscribe button and let's jump right into this story.
>> Mondani seems like a nice guy and I congratulate him on an extraordinary political achievement, but before the whole left side of the country catches socialism fever, let's listen to the other big winner in last Tuesday's election, Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who before the 2024 election said things like the party didn't shift to the center we will get torn apart. And we need to never use the word socialist or socialism ever again.
Well, she was right, but they didn't listen. Typical, am I right, lady? Bill Maher is now giving what sounds like a serious warning to Democrats. According to Maher, if the Democratic Party rides the and makes him their presidential nominee, they could be setting themselves up for disaster. [music] Maher basically argues they might as well hand the election directly to Republicans with a giant bow on top. And honestly, he believes it would become one of the biggest self-inflicted political mistakes in modern history.
Sure, Mem Donny's loud and confident socialist message could excite progressive voters and fire up the far left. But Maher argues that is probably where the excitement stops. Once you move outside those deep blue political circles and enter real swing state America, >> [music] >> the situation changes completely.
Moderate voters could walk away.
Independent voters, the people who usually decide elections, might instantly feel uncomfortable. And if that happens, Republicans could easily keep control of the White House for another 4 years. While Democratic strategists sit around wondering why they ignored all the warning signs before election day finally arrived.
>> At least the party has a clear choice here, very clear. One wing saying don't ever use the word socialist again. And one is saying I am A DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST.
CLEAR, HUH?
SO, how do we decide who's right? Well, it turns out we don't really have to flip a coin. We have the evidence. In 2024 13 Democrats won in districts Trump also won.
All moderates.
This isn't rocket science. All the left-leaning think tanks have done autopsies on 2024 and they all came up with the same message, both to the center. Bill Maher also points to election numbers that he says prove many Americans may actually be moving away from progressive politics and leaning [music] back toward more moderate or center-right views. He says the 2024 election results showed this very clearly. [music] According to Maher, voters did not simply support Trump across the board. Instead, many split their ballots very carefully, supporting moderate Democrats in key races while still voting Republican at the top that I end North Carolina. Trump reportedly won the state, but Democrat Josh Stein defeated his Republican opponent in the governor's race by around 15 points. In Wisconsin, Senator Tammy Baldwin managed to keep her seat. In Michigan, Representative Elissa Slotkin also held on to hers. And both of those victories happened in states that Trump still carried overall. Maher says the message from voters could not be more obvious.
Americans may support moderate Democrats, but they are much less likely to back a candidate openly pushing socialism. And according to Maher, if Democrats double down on a hard-left agenda, they could be heading toward one of the worst election defeats in modern political history. Problem is Gen Z thinks socialism's wired and capitalism's tired and billionaires are what's for dinner.
And who can blame them? If you're 30 and still sharing a bathroom with roommates, capitalism isn't working for you.
People will reject any economic system where there's a strange hair on the soap.
No one wants to be approaching middle age and still writing their name on food before they put it in the fridge.
So, they're quitting quiet quitting capitalism and texting socialism that they're down Bill Maher also brings up history while arguing that socialist systems have often failed to live up to their promises when tested in the real world. He points to examples like the Soviet Union and Venezuela saying those systems ended with serious economic and social problems instead. And Maher argues that many Americans already know this because they have watched these situations unfold across the world for decades. According to him, that is exactly could become such a major political problem for Democrats. Maher believes that the moment the Democratic Party officially puts Mamdani on the national stage as its main presidential candidate, millions of voters could immediately pull away. Moderates, independents, center-right voters, and even some Democrats who already feel frustrated with the party may instantly reject the idea. Maher argues they would not even stop to debate it for very long. They would simply head to the voting booth and vote against him in huge number.
>> Here's capitalist South Korea at night from space. Here's socialist North Korea.
Yeah.
In 1990, Venezuela was wealthier than Poland. But then Poland, finally free of Soviet-style economics, went all in on capitalism. And now their economy is as big as Japan. And people there have high wages, low inflation, cars, vacations, homes.
Meanwhile, Venezuela traded capitalism for Hugo Chavez's socialism for the 21st century, which turned out to be like socialism in the last century or any century, a mess. According to Bill Maher, the Democratic Party's shift towards socialism is becoming more and more shocking. He says the numbers and trends he discussed paint a rough picture for a party that seems determined to keep moving left without slowing down. And then Maher gives an opinion that may surprise some people.
He says he would rather support politicians like Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, or Gavin Newsom over Mamdani, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or Bernie Sanders. Maher admits the first group strongly supports progressive and woke politics, but he argues they still understand one important thing, that capitalism, even with all its flaws, remains the strongest system for creating wealth and progress. According to Maher, the second group is completely different. He believes they are not only progressive, but are actively to push America towards socialism and completely reshape the country's economic system.
[music] And Maher says that is a line America should never cross. New York is New York. It's definitely the media capital, the financial capital. It is a bellwether like no other city is in this country. So, don't tell me that who the mayor of New York is doesn't matter. It matters more >> devil's advocate for a second. Do you think, let's say, you know, on the seize the means of production. Do you think the mayor, that one person, if he is a democratic socialist, >> [music] >> do you think that he would have power and influence to be able to like usher in socialism?
>> Now, to be fair, Maher also raises a question many people ask. [music] Could Mamdani actually turn America into a socialist country if he somehow became president? On the surface, that might sound dramatic or exaggerated, but Maher says the issue is more complicated than people think. He argues it would probably not happen all at once.
Instead, it would happen slowly, little by little. According to Maher, a President Mamdani would not need to completely transform the country overnight. He could move things step by step through policies, government appointments, and executive decisions that slowly push the country further left. And Maher says one thing makes this even more concerning to him. He believes Mamdani would not be acting alone. Maher claims that many Democrats already openly support socialist style ideas, meaning the political system inside the party could already be prepared to help move those policies forward. In Maher's view, getting Democratic politicians to support those ideas might not even be difficult anymore.
>> [music] >> And that, he argues, is what makes the situation so dangerous. definitely has power and influence to elect J.D. Vance or whoever is the Republican candidate next time. [music] It is a walking commercial for the Republican Party >> I think the Republicans are going to the you let the Democratic socialists, and now they're actually calling themselves social, when you let them take over a major American city, this is what you get. The state-run grocery stores which worked so well in Cuba and the Soviet Union and Venezuela. Just bad ideas. And again, this ugly streak Well, you look at the ugly streak of anti-Semitism.
This is where Bill Maher's real concern becomes very clear. According to him, his biggest fear is not necessarily that America suddenly turns socialist overnight. What worries him most is the possibility that Democrats could completely destroy themselves politically by embracing socialism too openly and giving Republicans the perfect campaign weapon. Maher argues Republicans would immediately go into attack mode the second Democrats officially wrap themselves in a socialist image. And according to him, Republicans would barely even need [music] to work hard because the messaging would create itself. Every campaign commercial, every debate, and every political rally would focus on the same warning. Democrats want more control, more government power, and a system that critics compare to places like Venezuela. Maher believes that message could hit hard with voters and create serious long-term damage for Democrats. Who's the most popular politician on the left?
AOC? One of, but who who's You know, Bernie Bernie is a Bernie, yeah. Bernie is I mean, he's not he's a he's not a capitalist, you know? No, he's not. And he's also not president.
He's not He's but but he but neither is Mondani.
Yeah.
No, but he will Trust me, he will be featured in the campaign commercial.
>> to feature people They they boogeyman everybody. Yeah, but you don't have to boogeyman him. He does it to himself.
But but they'll do but they'll do it regardless. Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Gavin Newsom, they they make I know, but it it has Uh I think it was It just have more weight when it's real.
Now here is the point Bill Maher really seems focused on, and honestly, it is a strong political argument. Republicans usually try to turn almost every Democratic candidate into some kind of scary political villain. That has become normal in modern American politics.
>> [music] >> Maher points out that Republicans did it to Barack Obama, calling him radical and dangerous. They did it to Hillary Clinton, painting her as corrupt. They did it to Nancy Pelosi, [music] too, turning her into a symbol for everything conservatives disliked about Democrats.
But according to Maher, Mondani is very different from those examples. Maher says Republicans would not even need to exaggerate or twist his words. They would not need clever editing or fake narratives. Mondani's socialist views are already public, direct, and openly stated by him. He has defended those positions himself many times. And Maher argues that for Republican strategists, that is not just useful political ammunition. It is basically an entire arsenal already handed to them. And it's frankly horrible for a guy like you, who you spent your whole life talking about how government tries to do too much, which it does, and spends too much. Here you have Trump, who is the Republican, who is aggrandizing more power than anybody, as we just talked about. And then on the other side, you have the guy running in New York, Mondale, right? Okay, who's like a straight-up communist.
I mean, he is. He just talks about, you know, things that communists say. I mean, he wants free grocery stores, free buses.
>> I want him to win. You want him to win?
>> Yeah. Maher also responds to people like George Will who argue that different political systems should still be debated fairly. Maher says there comes a point where history has already [music] given enough evidence. According to him, socialism is no longer just a classroom theory or an academic discussion. He argues the world has already tested those ideas many times, and the results were often disastrous. Maher points to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the economic collapse in Venezuela, and Cuba's long struggles as examples. He says America does not need to repeat those experiments again just to learn the same lesson. According to Maher, the broader historical record shows that socialist systems have repeatedly struggled to succeed in practice and often failed to deliver the promises they made to people. Socialist slogan used to be workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains. The new socialist slogan is trust us, I know it won't be a mess.
So, yeah, when when post-war labor government Britain was about to get started, one of their leading lights of the socialist movement named Aneurin Bevan, he said, "What could go wrong?" He said, "We have a nation bedded on coal, surrounded by fish.
It would take an organizational genius to have a shortage of it."
In 3 years, they had a shortage of it.
And according to Bill Maher, that is the real bottom line in all of this. Maher, who has spent most of his life identifying as a liberal, is now warning Democrats as loudly as he can. And he believes the party would be making a major political mistake if they ignore those warnings.
>> [music] >> Mar says the polling numbers, historical examples, and voter reactions all seem to point toward the same conclusion.
Socialist-style politics remain a very hard sell to much of the American public, no matter how strongly progressive activists defend them. Mar argues that if Democrats truly want to win back political power, they [music] may need to move away from socialist messaging and return closer to the political center. He says voters want policies they feel comfortable supporting in real life, not ideas they view as extreme or risky.
>> [music] >> Because according to Mar, if Democrats continue moving further left, 2028 may not end with a normal election loss. It could become a full political collapse for the party.
