Gusty winds in Northern California bringing trees, large branches downAdded:
Welcome to the first CBS 13 News at 5 on Sunday in our new ARVR [music] set. I'm Steve Large. We're going to start off with these extreme weather conditions hitting us today. Wild winds and those power outages in effect right now. Kayla Molar is tracking some of the damage we've seen so far today. Kayla.
Yeah, that's right Steve. I have been sitting here anxiously watching some of these trees looking up at the branches.
Some of them look like they could snap at any moment. Kind of like this one.
It's pretty large. It's even taller than I am and there are some even bigger down branches off X Street here in downtown Sacramento. A lot of leaves littered everywhere. Smaller twigs and smaller branches in sidewalks and in the road.
And over in Stockton, they are also dealing with a mess. Take a look at this footage from a Costco parking lot where a tree came down on several cars. Scary situation. Also in Stockton, a family was enjoying the day when they heard a large crack and then a crashing sound.
They went out front to find one of their cars crushed by a pretty good sized tree. Oh, we had all the kids in the backyard when it happened. So I was like, oh thank god they were back there.
But luckily it was a parts car, not a driving.
And here at Southside Park, I met two friends, one from Auburn, one from Berkeley. They decided to meet in the middle here in Sacramento for a picnic and to spend time with Jasmine's newborn. But say even driving here in the strong wind was scary. We were a little bit freaked out.
At certain parts when it got very windy.
But Yeah. And then I mean, look around you.
There's some branches down everywhere.
Have you guys been kind of keeping an eye just in case like a >> Yeah, we have. Yeah, especially with baby. We're definitely just very cognizant. Trying to see if anything is falling down.
Yeah, those three have since packed up and left the park. And with wind also comes fire danger. So, PG&E has gone ahead and preemptively shut off power for some areas in the region like outside of Vacaville. And these power shut-offs could continue into tomorrow.
PG&E says up to nearly 5,000 customers could be affected. We are going to be a heading to those areas that are experiencing those power safety shut-offs and we'll check back in with you tonight on CBS 13 at 10:00.
