The House of Wisdom (Beytülhikme) in 8th-9th century Baghdad, established by Caliph Harun al-Rashid and flourishing under Caliph al-Ma'mun, served as the medieval world's central knowledge repository, functioning as an early form of Google, Wikipedia, and NASA combined. This institution collected manuscripts from across the globe, translated works from Greek, Persian, Sanskrit, and Syriac into Arabic, and produced groundbreaking scientific and philosophical works by scholars like Al-Khwarizmi (father of algorithms), Al-Kindi, and the Banu Musa brothers. The 1258 Mongol destruction of Baghdad resulted in the deliberate destruction of these invaluable manuscripts, representing one of history's most significant 'data deletion' events that delayed human progress by centuries.
