【獨家|Exclusive】經貿辦間諜案觸發憂慮,內政部翟偉紳 Dan Jarvis:希望在英港人「保持警覺,但毋須恐懼」Be alert, but not afraidAdded:
Two men have been convicted for carrying out state threats activity on UK soil on behalf of China.
They now face the prospect of lengthy prison sentences for their crimes.
These convictions, which are the first under the National Security Act related to China, send a clear message. Carry out hostile acts on behalf of a foreign state, and there will be consequences.
I know this case has caused worry and concern amongst many within the Hong Kong community here in the UK.
So, I want to talk directly to you and be absolutely clear.
In the UK, we value freedom of speech, including the right to criticize political leaders and to lawfully protest.
We will never tolerate or turn a blind eye to attempts by any foreign government to intimidate, harass, or harm people living in this country.
We will continue to protect your rights, freedom, and safety.
Our law enforcement agencies have the powers they need to detect and disrupt this type of activity.
They will continue to use the full force of the law against any perpetrators.
This case shows exactly that.
We will continue to hold the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to account for any acts that threaten people's safety here in the UK.
That is why the Foreign Office summoned the Chinese ambassador to make it clear that activity like this was and will always be unacceptable on UK soil.
Our commitment to you is backed by action.
Earlier this year, we expanded the BNO visa scheme, honoring this country's historic commitment to the people of Hong Kong.
And last year, completed the severing of extradition ties with Hong Kong.
This government will not support extradition, which is politically motivated, or assists in the suppression of democracy or free speech.
And to ensure police officers have the skills they need to identify and respond to this type of activity, last year, we also rolled out specialist training for all police forces in the UK.
We greatly value the contribution of the Hong Kong community to this country, and your safety is paramount.
We will continue to listen to community leaders and hear your concerns.
Guidance is available online with clear advice on how you can keep yourself safe if you think that you are a victim of transnational repression.
Our message is clear.
Be alert, but not afraid.
Anyone who believes they may be at risk should report incidents or suspicious activity to the police.
Any allegations of unlawful activity will be handled sensitively, taken seriously by the police, and will be swiftly assessed and investigated in line with UK law.
The safety and security of Hong Kongers in the UK is of the utmost importance.
This country will always stand up for the rights of the people of Hong Kong.
