Xi Jinping’s invocation of the Thucydides Trap is a calculated rhetorical maneuver to shift the burden of avoiding conflict entirely onto the United States. It masterfully uses historical fatalism to demand American restraint while legitimizing China’s own strategic expansion.

Trump Xi Summit: Why Xi Jinping Warned Trump About The Thucydides TrapAdded:
Did Xi Jinping just threaten Trump with At the Beijing summit, Xi Jinping asked Trump one of the most loaded questions in geopolitics. Can we avoid the Thucydides trap? Now, here's [music] what that means.
2,500 years ago, the Greek historian Thucydides wrote about the war between Athens and Sparta.
Athens was rising. Sparta was the established power. The tension between them became inevitable and catastrophic.
Harvard Professor Graham Allison modernized this into a warning.
When a rising power challenges an established one, conflict historically follows. He called it the Thucydides trap. And he wrote an entire book asking, "Can America and China escape it?" This is no small talk. This is a sitting head of state on home soil asking the US president, "We know where the road is headed, but should we take it?" Now, here's what makes this remarkable. Chinese leaders have repeatedly downplayed the risk of a Thucydides trap. Xi himself said in 2015 that the conflict is not inevitable as long as both countries avoid strategic miscalculations. [music] So, why raise it now?
Directly to Trump's face. Now, here's my read.
On the face of this, this may seem like relief that Xi Jinping is warning about war. Maybe he does not have the intent to go to war.
>> [music] >> But, it also triggers concern. This is not just a bold and rare acknowledgement by the Chinese administration that the conflict is possible and that there are flashpoints like Taiwan, [music] like trade. This is also Xi setting him up and putting him in a tough spot. [music] In the public glare, this feels like China telling Trump the ball is now in the United States' court. Will Trump choose an aggressive posture, or will he give in? Connect this with Taiwan. Xi called it the most important issue in US-China relations, warning it could push the relations toward dangerous place.
Now, if Trump pushes weapons to Taipei after this meeting, Beijing will read it as America's answer to Xi's question, that America chose the Thucydides trap, and that may be exactly what Xi may be setting him up.
