Why Italians Love Scotland (and Vice Versa)

[00:00:01]If you are English, and you move to Italy, sei inglese.

[00:00:05]But if you're Scottish, well, people call you English as well. I mean, my my mother-in-law still calls me inglese after all these years.

[00:00:15]And I don't know about you, but that's one of the biggest insults you give to a Scottish person, calling them English.

[00:00:20]At least for me it is.

[00:00:22]I don't hate the English. I have nothing against English.

[00:00:24]But uh in Italy, when you say you're Scottish, the reaction is forza Scozia. There's a certain love that they transmit towards you, which I don't think you get if you say you're English.

[00:00:37]Certain certain distance that you give to the English.

[00:00:41]So when I say in Italy that I'm Scottish, I get a really warm welcome.

[00:00:46]Now, disclaimer here, yeah. I'm not saying that England is better than Scotland, or Scotland is better than England.

[00:00:51]England are better than Scotland at foot- at football. I agree with that.

[00:00:54]But I'm just pointing out the differences that I see uh when you tell Italians that you're Scottish.

[00:01:02]I mean, I've my I've got loads of English friends. I did high school in England, yeah. Uh I'm I went to live there when I was 11. So I've got a lot of uh close friends who are English.

[00:01:12]Um and I don't have any English relatives.

[00:01:15]Well, I do. My grandfather's mother was English. So I suppose that's the only relative I have who's English. All my other relatives are Scottish.

[00:01:24]So I'm I said disclaimer this year. I'm not saying one's better than the other.

[00:01:27]Well, another insult that you give to a Scottish person when I was young was YouTube.

[00:01:33]Does anyone Did anyone grow up in Scotland? Is anyone Scottish? What's the bigger What's the bigger insult? YouTube or you're English?

[00:01:40]But yeah, I can tell my mother-in-law. She's 84 now. But even after 25 years here, she still says, "Ah, no, you're English."

[00:01:48]>> [music] >> It's like calling someone from Barcelona a Real Madrid fan, or someone from Alto Adige from Calabria.

[00:01:57]Not that it's an inch or that, you know, the difference is that big or if if not bigger.

[00:02:02]So, what is it that when I see an Italy that I'm Scottish, what is it that unites us?

[00:02:07]Is it our distance from the English?

[00:02:11]Or is it the fact that we have similar cultures, our Celtic Northern Italian Lombard cultures have something in common. One of the biggest comments I see in the channel is that the Italians I think that us Scots are Do you want me to put it on the pure la mano?

[00:02:28]But we're more humble than our our English counterparts.

[00:02:34]In a lot of things. We also have a similar culture, an underdog culture.

[00:02:37]Uh I did a video about the Italian work culture and the word sgarbare.

[00:02:42]And that us Scots, we don't shy away from a bit of hard work.

[00:02:46]Uh so, I think in that sense we have similar cultures.

[00:02:49]I saw a comment uh on one of the videos I did that one of the one of the viewers said that he was amazed by the all the bagpipes that wasn't they weren't Boston uh when Scotland played the first World Cup game.

[00:03:02]And uh he said, "Oh, it was great, you know, they were making loads of noise." I think we've got that in that's similar to the Italian culture, you know.

[00:03:09]Italians are very loud.

[00:03:12]So are we.

[00:03:13]Uh Italians love being social.

[00:03:16]So do we.

[00:03:18]They love their food. We like our drink.

[00:03:21]They combine If you combine the two, I'm sure they get along together.

[00:03:24]But uh there definitely is similarities, a lot more similarities I would say between Scotland and Italy than there are England and Italy.

[00:03:33]Also, our humor is very similar, you know, we make fun of ourselves.

[00:03:37]English have got stiff upper upper lip.

[00:03:40]And uh very there's very different cultures. If anyone's ever been or lived in England and Scotland, you know that they're two different people. And if you want to know where I'm going, I'm going to go to Malta on I'll show you a little bit later in the video a little bit few few views of Malta.

[00:03:58]I've been going there for years. I really like it.

[00:04:02]So, I'm ending the video in Malta, a lovely place. And I want to know all you Italians out there who've been sending me the comments "Viva la Scozia".
