In structural framing, using a single 6x6 post at truss landing points provides superior structural integrity compared to ganging multiple 2x6 boards together, because the larger cross-section allows for larger lag bolts (5.5 inches wide) that create stronger connections without splitting the wood, and simplifies corner construction by reducing material waste.

Added:Hey guys, welcome back to Berry's Lumber. Matthew and I appreciate you tuning in. Well, you can see I'm out here standing on our new concrete slab.
Uh we've already got it filthy. Been driving driving the tractor over it.
Uh not worried about getting it dirty.
That's what it's here for, it's concrete to work on.
Uh we've had to make just a little a slight adjustment into our framing package and come right back and I'll tell you why and what we're going to do this morning to accommodate it. So, we'll be right back.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Okay, guys, welcome back. Uh we intended on stick framing this whole building and we are going to, but after receiving our trusses, I've decided to make a slight change. Uh I was just going to triple up a 2 by 6 everywhere a truss landed.
And in retrospect, that wasn't a good idea.
So, what we're going to do, we'll put our 2 by 6 seal plate around, uh pressure treated, anchor it to the concrete. And then when we stand up our walls, everywhere a truss is going to land, we're just going to put a 6 by 6 post.
You'll never see it inside the wall, but there'll be one there, 8 ft one, 8 ft one, 8 ft here, then there'll be a 32-ft door opening, and there'll be uh two posts over there on the end.
It really don't matter whether you triple up two 2x6s, three 2x6s, or a 6x6. The issue was is the size of the lag bolt.
It was a 1/2-in lag bolt going into one 2x6, and I just didn't like that. I like a whole lot better having a 5 and 1/2-in wide board, and we put that lag bolt in there, it'll get a good hold, it won't split.
So, that's what we're doing. We need eight on the back wall, and five across the front, total of 13.
We'll probably cut a couple extras along the way. Uh I actually need to cut some true 2x6s for a another customer, so we might get a little wasted. The ones that are big enough, you can see the pile over here.
They're not real big.
Uh rough guess, they got to be over 14-ft tall.
Uh we'll get a final number day we build it, but all these are 16-ft plus, so that shouldn't be a problem.
But, that's the goal of this video is to saw all those little logs. Most of them will just barely square out a 6x6, and be honest with you, if they're for me, if I got this little hair of bark on them, it's not going to hurt. Not going to be the end of the world. But, the goal is is every 8 ft there'll be a post, and then we'll infill with 2x6s between it, double top plate, center truss installed, we'll skin the outside with board and batten, and we'll skin the inside with something you'll learn later on, but it'll be a product we make, and it'll never be seen. It's just buried in the wall, but I feel better about it. I I think Matthew agrees. I feel better about having a post in there versus a ganged up triple six.
Uh plus, you know, if you ever built anything, a corner eats up a lot of material, cuz you'll do four one way, two the other.
You know, you'll use six boards in a corner. And just set the post over there will simplify that somewhat. So, enough talking. Matthew's got us three little candidates loaded up. We're not going to make you watch all of saw all of them, but you'll see the first one is probably the biggest one we got. And the rest of them basically just going to take a little, probably roll it 180, take a little, and see where we're at.
I mean, if I can get 5 and 1/2 squared out of them, I'll be happy. So, we appreciate you tuning in and let's get to it.
It'd be nice if we would not find that wall.

Probably going to cut back off of it while we got it stood up.
It don't have to be perfect and clear.

This is going down to 5 5/8. That's what we need, Matthew.
I ain't I ain't that worried about it.
Let me uh put it back on pattern.

>> Okay, guys. I changed the plan up on you just a little bit there. I said I was going to make 2x6s out of the waste.
It really didn't work out good cuz I'm making my post 5 and 5/8 square and the the other customer needed true 2x6s.
And be honest with you, there's only a couple logs that's going to make any waste anyway. So, we just made 1 and 1/8 by 5 and 5/8. We'll use this for uh bracing. We got 13 of those posts to stand up and they're going to need bracing this way as well as this way until we get the walls framed around it and double plate on it. So, they won't go to waste. They're well needed. Uh that's why I made a change. So, let's get these off here.
And save us using our 2x6s for uh bracing, we got all these nice basically 1x6s.
And since I cut them at 1 and 1/8, these three pieces here will become stickers.
Waste not, want not.
So.
Matty's going to go get rid of the uh the waste and come back.
And how do we pick this up since I rolled it off the back of the mill?
It happens.
I might get it myself.
Wasn't paying attention.
It's fine. I can handle it.
What I was trying to do get it right there on top of the lift.
Wrong one.
There you go.
Just elevate it a little bit, so he's got room to slide underneath it with the forks.
We don't handle this stuff if we can avoid it. We'll set it set it outside with the tractor.

I uh show you what we're doing with them.
Easiest way to handle this big stuff, guys, flip it over with the tractor, take it off with the tractor.
We got some skids set up here.
And we'll just stack them up.
A whole lot easier than him and I trying to manhandle them.
There you go.
That's good. Just set it down.
Oh.
Okay.
But always to have good good to have some skids laid out here when you're doing big stuff.
So.
Like I say, that's probably one of the better logs we got. These are good straight logs.
They're just not big. And that's okay.
They're well suited for what we need to make out of them.
So.
Give me just a second. We'll get right back at it.

>> Okay, guys. Welcome back. Sorry about the long time lapse. We had lots of other things to do. Uh We've been We've been shut down for a week cuz of our concrete. So, we've been hustling trying to get through some of these small customer orders, get caught back up.
Uh Like I said, my goal here was to cut the 6x6s for our new addition, and then cut some 2x6s off for a customer.
It really didn't work out because I'm actually cutting 5 and 5/8, where the customer orders got to be a true six.
So, we ended up with What is that? 1 2 3 4 5 6 16 18 good 1x6s, 5 and 5/8, uh that we can use for bracing when we stand our post up. So, this part of the project is done.
Uh we'll get them out of here tomorrow, band it up, set it on top of the hill, and you'll see these again when we start framing our new addition. Uh Hopefully, two to four weeks, depending on Matt and Cody when they have time available, and Matthew and I when we get caught up on some of this customer stuff.
But, hopefully within that two weeks, hot summer sun, they'll evacuate a good bit of moisture, and they'll be a little bit drier.
They're pine. They're not awful to start with, but, you know, every little bit helps when you're handling them.
Uh pretty simple sawing.
Most of these, we got one board or no boards off the side of it. The log was so small. And that's why I picked them out that way. Just big enough to make a 5 and 5/8 square.
And it's a good way to utilize some of the smaller logs, not the treetops, and limy stuff, but just good straight logs that were unfortunately small. Uh quite happy with them. Hopefully they'll dry good, won't do nothing real wonky, but, you know, time will tell.
Uh not over the complicated sawing, especially with our LT70 with uh the Accuset uh DCS on it. Really makes this simple. Um Tomorrow we'll jump on that little 2x6 job. We got to get it out of the way, get it done. Uh you got any questions on this? Like I say, it's pretty simple stuff, but it we feel them what we do, and this is what we're doing today.

I spent most of my life in customer service, and if I can teach the next generation how to do good customer service, you know, be respectful, uh be timely, answer your phone calls, return your emails, your text messages, your Instagram messages, you know, your TikTok messages, return all your messages, communicate with customers.
