Togo Announces Visa-Free Entry for Africans — What Happens Next?Added:
What if one African country is just made a decision that could reshape movement in the continent, trade, and business across the continent?
This week in Lome, Togo made an announcement that immediately sparked a debate across Africa. Supporters are calling it a bold step toward continent towards intercontinental Critics are asking whether others will follow. In any case, it's all inspired out of, you know, people wanting for this to happen in each African country.
Now, beyond the headlines, one question matters. Could this be the beginning of a new era for African mobility and economic operation, ultimately realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area? Well, stay with me because what was announced, where it happened, and what it could mean for ordinary Africans may be bigger than what most people realize. Here is a statement by the government by the president, President Gnassingbe of Togo. still push partnerships that keep us separated and dependent, one proud African nation said, "We reject your divisions. We choose unity." And for us Africans, this is massive, life-changing, game-changing money and opportunities. These barriers big visionary.
Let's see. Staying isolated, poor, and divided, President Gnassingbe and the Togolese government deserve loud applause. This isn't empty rhetoric.
This is action. They've been reforming their business environment for years to attract Yeah, so, um, the government announced during the uh ongoing conference in Togo in Lome, Togo. Well, what are the things now Togo become I think the sixth or seventh country.
There's Rwanda, Benin, The Gambia, Seychelles, Kenya, Ghana and now Togo. That makes it now uh seven countries that allows visa free for African nationals. Now this term is very confusing because visa free means in some cases it could be no visa at all. In some countries it could be just visa on arrival. In some cases it's just free visa, e-visa without paying. And then so regional free movement for example uh you know what ECOWAS Eastern African Community is Southern African Development Community does. So it depends but you will not pay uh the and there's no that hassle of being rejection uh this and that. So either you apply for e-visa online without any payment or you do it on arrival. It depends it's different from country to country. But of course you are required to have that a valid passport, a return ticket, maybe proof of accommodation accommodation, online registration or limited stay of limited stay periods.
All this might be applicable. It will just remove that visa hassle which is a big thing. I'm not trying to make it uh a very uh you know easy thing. No, it was it was a headache and I'm happy that this has been now realized by Togo. Well, uh Togo said the president citizens of all African Union member states holding a valid national passport can now enter Togo to enter Togo without a visa. So, the measure took effect actually from 18 May 2026. So, this is something bigger than what we have regionally like for example Togo belongs to ECOWAS.
So, it's it's something bigger. It's for all African nations. So, this was announced during the opening of the third edition of the Biashara Africa Business Forum in Lome, the capital of Togo. Well, so the government presented several reasons behind the decision. One is strengthening African integration, support free movement of people and goods, align with the goals of African Continental Free Trade Area, and position Togo as a regional hub for business, service, investment, and culture. So, the important condition reported so far is that visa-free entry is I told you it it differs from country to country. So, the visa entry the visa-free entry is reported to allow stay up to 30 days in a country.
Travelers still need to comply with immigration, security, public health requirements, and pre-arrival registration procedures where applicable. So, this moves now to puts Togo alongside countries that have opened it uh more broadly for African travelers. You have as I mentioned it before or earlier, you have Rwanda, Benin, The Gambia, Kenya, Ghana, now Togo and Seychelles, I forgot, joining that list. Well done to Togo. I mean, we all have our critics with regards to when it comes to the Alliance of Sahel States, but, you know, when states, when governments do good, we should be able to commend them. Well, even if it's one step at a time. That's all we need, isn't it? All right then. Now, look, I have a question. My question is that whenever this visa-free is announced for African nationals, so the question is, what about the African diaspora? You know, the African diaspora that left the continent without their will, forcefully. Okay?
I think it should be extended to that, otherwise it all become It always becomes that gap, you know, that void.
It's It's not only to Togo, I mean, that happens also. Only Ghana actually give visa-free.
Oh, Burkina Faso is not in the list.
Also, Burkina Faso is for all all African nationals are welcome to Burkina Faso. And Burkina Faso, I think goes to some extent to the African descendants, not the one US is sending them as deportees.
Uh uh but through, I think, the ADDI, the African Development Uh was it African Diaspora Development Institute led by Her Excellency Dr. Arikana.
Uh through that, you can get a resident ID in Burkina Faso, but only through that institute. But all African nationals are welcome to Burkina Faso. That So, that makes it eight countries.
Uh well, I asked AI how many countries, and look at what it it's not Pan African really. Why not including Burkina Faso in the list?
You see? I mean, it's the struggle is in all levels.
That's we should have our own thing. Anyway, that thing needs to be clear by Togo.
And I think Benin does it also for African descendants.
Ghana also welcomes African descendants outside of Africa. I'm talking about African diaspora. Burkina Faso to some extent through the ADDI Institute does it. But all the rest no. So, I think that gap needs to be addressed.
Thank you very much for tuning in and let us know in the comment section what do you think of this latest decision of Togo to you know, opening its borders for African nationals. Will more countries open also their borders? Will easier movement translate into more trade opportunity? What would more connected Africa actually look like in practice?
